Depth charts create a lot of conversation among fans and analysts during training camp and the preseason, so any time one is released, people take notice. The Los Angeles Rams shared their first unofficial depth chart of 2019 on Monday, complete with a few surprises.

It’s important to remember that this is an unofficial depth chart and while it’s put out by the team, it’s not necessarily filled in by the coaches. More likely, it’s done by team media members who are observing practice.

Nonetheless, here’s how the offense looks on the first depth chart.

depth-chart-offense.png

It’s one of the most talented units in the NFL, rich with playmakers at every position. The wide receiver group is especially deep, all the way from Brandin Cooks to Mike Thomas.

Surprisingly, Darrell Henderson Jr. is listed fifth at running back despite receiving first-team reps like the other tailbacks. That should be taken with a large grain of salt, given his playmaking ability.

On defense, there are quite a few new starters from last season. Eric Weddle, Clay Matthews, Sebastian Joseph-Day and Micah Kiser are in line to replace players such as Ndamukong Suh and Mark Barron, filling in nicely thus far.

depth-chart-defense.png

The special teams unit is just about unchanged from last season, with punter Johnny Hekker, kicker Greg Zuerlein and long snapper Jake McQuaide all back in the mix. JoJo Natson is listed as the punt and kick returner with no one else on the depth chart at those spots.

Again, this is an unofficial depth chart, but there are a handful of notable position battles that are gaining some clarity.

Rams 90-man roster by jersey number

By: Cameron DaSilva | 13 hours ago

The Los Angeles Rams will go through the preseason with 90 players on their roster before having to trim down to the limit of just 53 for the regular season. There will be difficult decisions to be made and quality players released, which makes the 27-man cutdown so tough.

Below is the current Rams roster sorted by jersey number.

This first depth chart doesn't really mean anything. As pointed out Henderson isn't the #5 RB. It just points out what I've been saying. The new guys need to show they can play in preseason. Jobs will be won and lost in the first two preseason games. Those are the games that make or break the depth chart. The third game is used as a tie breaker when competition is very close at contested roster positions. Most of the guys playing extended snaps in the 4th game aren't going to make the squad. If they do it's strictly on ST's or the PS.

These early depth charts, this one included, is simply based upon seniority. Also since Wade changes his defensive alignment on every play, the positions change each play. If they think they can play Mathews full time outside, they had better go back to his film from last year. The OLB (not the WIL/JACK) in this scheme needs to cover, and Mathews was not good in that area last year. It's one of the reasons they moved him inside to begin with.

How they play the early regular season games will be interesting. I see Clay more as a rotational pass rusher replacing Brockers on passing downs. But on early downs, Ebukam is better if expected to cover. If you look at Mathew's performance in 2017 when he last played OLB, it is very similar to Samson's last year who was in just a 2nd year, and Samson was better in coverage.

So it will be interesting how this all shakes out in Sept.

With camp closed, here’s 3k’s updated look at a potential 53-man roster.

The Los Angeles Rams defense huddles before their Week 10 game against the Seattle Seahawks, Nov. 11, 2018.
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Now that training camp is over, I’m updating my 2019 Los Angeles Rams 53-man rosterprojection.

Position parentheticals denote the number of players at the position that make the 53-man. Rookies and undrafted rookies are also noted in parentheses.

QB (2)
In: Jared Goff, Blake Bortles
Out: Brandon Allen, John Wolford
Changes from last projection: N/A

Going to be a very important preseason for Allen and Wolford. There are much hungrier teams around the NFL for talent; they might be able to latch on with some good showings.

RB (4)
In: Todd Gurley, Darrell Henderson (rookie), Malcolm Brown, John Kelly
Out: Justin Davis, Matt Colburn (UDFA)
Changes from last projection: N/A

Tempted to switch Kelly out for Davis as the latter was preferred for special teams. But with Brown back and possibly going to a special teams-only role, I wonder if Davis’ value on teams is lessened a bit allowing Special Teams Coordinator John Fassel to pick up his snaps elsewhere.

WR (6)
In: Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Josh Reynolds, JoJo Natson, Mike Thomas
Out: , KhaDarel Hodge, Austin Proehl, Alex Bachman (UDFA), Nsimba Webster (UDFA), WR Johnathan Lloyd (UDFA)
Changes from last projection: Thomas IN, Hodge OUT

Mike Thomas had a good camp. Those things tend to matter.

TE/FB (3)
In: Gerald Everett, Tyler Higbee, Keenen Brown (UDFA)
Out: Johnny Mundt, Romello Brooker (UDFA), Kendall Blanton (UDFA)
Changes from last projection: N/A

This one’s tougher to parse among the tight end depth. I’ve had Brown here just based on what I saw from him in college, but this should be decided over the next four weeks.

OL (9)
In: Andrew Whitworth, Rob Havenstein, Joseph Noteboom, Brian Allen, Austin Blythe, Bobby Evans (rookie), David Edwards (rookie), Jamil Demby, Aaron Neary
Out: Jeremiah Kolone, Chandler Brewer (UDFA), Vitas Hrynkiewicz (UDFA), Brandon Hitner (UDFA), Matt Kaskey(UDFA)
Changes from last projection: N/A

Really eager to see the depth get their work throughout August and see how things shake out because of it. There is absolutely opportunity to get a roster spot here for someone who has a good month.

DL (5)
In: Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers, Sebastian Joseph-Day, John Franklin-Myers, Greg Gaines (rookie)
Out: Tanzel Smart, Bryant Jones (UDFA), Marquise Copeland (UDFA), Boogie Roberts (UDFA)
Changes from last projection: N/A

Starting to feel more certainty with this quintet especially with Smart still holding a year of PS eligibility.

LB (9)
In: Clay Matthews, Micah Kiser, Cory Littleton, Samson Ebukam, Dante Fowler, Jr., Bryce Hager, Morgan Fox, Dakota Allen (rookie), Justin Lawler
Out: Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Trevon Young, Troy Reeder (UDFA), Natrez Patrick (UDFA), Josh Carraway, Landis Durham (UDFA)
Changes from last projection: Lawler IN, Okoronkwo OUT

I’ll go ahead and drop Obo simply because he’s missed time again, and I wonder if that’s going to affect his play even when he does get back. I was excited for him this year, but sometimes injuries just win out. The problem is now, he’s going to be motivated to rush back and aside from the potential to worsen his injury or pick up other aliments because of whatever’s he suffering from, there’s also the likelihood that he won’t play his football if he’s not 100%.

Sucks, but such is the game.

CB (6)

In: Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib, Nickell Robey-Coleman, David Long (rookie), Troy Hill, Dominique Hatfield
Out: Kevin Peterson, Darious Williams, Donte Deayon, Ramon Richards
Changes from last projection: N/A

Much like the offensive line, this is an area with legitimate opportunity. This one certainly offers special teams viability to boot.

S (6)
In: John Johnson III, Eric Weddle, Taylor Rapp (rookie), Marqui Christian, Nick Scott (rookie), Travin Howard
Out: Steven Parker
Changes from last projection: N/A

Howard was listed on the depth chart as a LB yesterday, but it matters where he’s listed and even where he plays these next few games. It matters how he plays. I’ll buy on a plus month to get him in the mix and maybe even as defensive depth and not just special teams.

ST (3)
In: Greg Zuerlein, Johnny Hekker, Jake McQuaide
Out: N/A
