Rams might have a leg up again with Zuerlein back

The first kicked ball sailed through the uprights. So did the next four, before one from nearly 50 yards just missed wide left.

It took all of three minutes during a field goal drill, but Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein showed during Saturday’s practice at UC Irvine that his surgically repaired back and right leg are sound.

That qualified as a huge benchmark for Zuerlein and for a Rams team that is in the preseason Super Bowl conversation.

“Went well and had fun,” Zuerlein said after kicking in a competitive situation for the first time since December surgery.

Zuerlein, a seventh-year pro, is arguably as important to the Rams’ success as any of the team’s stars on offense.

Despite being sidelined for the final two-regular season games and a playoff loss last season, Zuerlein scored a league-leading 158 points for a team that averaged a league-best 29.9 points a game and won the NFC West.

The kicker known as Legatron, Greg the Leg and Mr. Automatic made 38 of 40 field-goal attempts. He kicked seven field goals in a 35-30 victory at Dallas.

Coach Sean McVay said it “looked like the old Greg,” after watching him Saturday.

“I don’t think anybody really realizes, myself included, how much pain he was really fighting through and the production he was able to have last year,” McVay said. “So I know that’s a big weight off him.”

The Rams re-signed kicker Sam Ficken as an insurance policy in case Zuerlein falters. But Zuerlein appears on track to return at full strength after being held out of most organized-team activities and then attempting a few kicks in noncompetitive situations during minicamp.

“I feel ready to go,” said Zuerlein, who carries a salary-cap number of about $3.6 million according to overthecap.com. “It’s process to get my kicking form back to where I need for games, but physically, I feel good.

“The craft right now is not ideally where you want it to be to hit the ball perfectly every time. But that’s what camp’s for, to get ready for the regular season.”

Zuerlein, punter Johnny Hekker and kick returner Pharoh Cooper all were voted to the Pro Bowl last season. Long snapper Jake McQuaide also was selected.

Zuerlein’s reliability makes it easier for McVay the play-caller because Zuerlein can be called upon once the Rams’ cross an opponent’s 45-yard line. Zuerlein made six of seven attempts from 50 yards or farther last season.

“You certainly want to try and finish those drives with touchdowns,” McVay said, “but when you have a guy like Greg that can hit from so far out consistently, it certainly is something that makes you feel good.”

Zuerlein is a weapon and sometimes you don't realize what you have until you lose it. Sam Ficken scared me to death and that was showcased when the Rams had to go for it on fourth down in Ficken's first game, when they had a 50 yard FG, McVay would not have thought twice trotting Zuerlein out there. On top of that Ficken's kick offs at times came up short and that hurt field position.

John Fassel is the finest special teams coach in the NFL and I would never second guess his decision, however, I felt signing Ficken over a veteran was a mistake especially where the Rams were on the verge of post season. Granted Fassel signed the guy, who had the best workout, but you could see the look on Ficken's face when he came out for his first FG attempt, he looked green and scared. Again, in the end, Ficken made his FG's in post season, but I had an uneasy feeling and I'm glad GZ is back.

Zuerlien routinely kicks the ball out of the end zone on kick offs, negateing any chance for a return TD. his ability to kick FG's from 50+ and able to make them from mid-field is huge. Rams offense only needs to move half the field to be able to score.

Sam Ficken? Huge drop off.

That has to be unprecedented.

This cannot be overlooked. If the Rams are at the opponents 47 or close they are in his range.

I didn't know he needed surgery on his leg to! wow! He must of been really been feeling some pain the end of last year. I'm glad he's back. We'll really need him towards the end of the year!

Now that GZ’s back, I’m back to backing his back. If he’s back to legging it out, that’ll give us a leg up, especially on the back leg.

I'm happy that we have Greg the Leg back. Maybe he breaks Tomlinson's record this year? Here's hoping he does!

How often do place kickers end up on injured reserve? This was a shocker last season. Only injury to a kicker I can recall was to Gramatica of the Cardinals, while he was celebrating.

I believe the surgery was to his back, not leg. I could be wrong, but that's my recollection.

Turns out it was both...and I was going purely based on recollection as I said.

I took him for granted, forgot how hard it is to find a kicker you are confident in.

Ficken scared me every time he kicked and I cant imagine having to coach a game with a kicker like that

not necessarily. it may just be poorly worded. maybe it needed a comma in there somewhere to differentiate between the two.

Yesterday Sarina did an interview with our three specialists and asked each what their “en fuego” moment was of camp so far. McQuaide said it was watching Greg kick a 65 yarder. I’d say he’s back.
