The Best Los Angeles Rams Coaches of All Time
573 votes 206 voters 27 items

Between their time in Cleveland, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and finally back to LA, there have been many Rams coaches, but who is truly the best Los Angeles Rams coach of all time? Help us answer that question by voting up your personal favorite Los Angeles Rams coaches, and voting down any that you believe brought the team down.

Prior to the NFL AFL merger in 1970, the Rams won two NFL Championships both as the Cleveland Rams and Los Angeles Rams. The coaches that led those team were Adam Walsh and Joe Stydahar respectively. In the modern NFL era, coach Dick Vermeil took the St. Louis Rams to Super Bowl XXXIV, where they defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-16.

Who is the greatest LA Rams coach of all time? Let us know by voting up for your favorite head coaches below that you believe really made an impact on the franchise.

Fisher is better than Spags and Linny from what I saw during those dark years.

George Allen would be #1 for me.

Clark Shaughnessy and Joe Stydahar would be in my top 10.

Yes, Fisher deserves better than that ranking.

Rich Brooks should not be ahead of anybody.

Going to take more than one year for me to put McVay in the top 5.

Agreed, Fisher wasn't a bad coach. Just a bit too loyal and rigid to grow with the changing league. An average coach but not worse than Spags was or a lot of other coaches on that list.

Joe Vitt ranked ahead of Ray Malavasi?? Ummmm ok

And yeah, Joe Vitt that high? I don't have a problem with the guy but to rank him in the top 10 for half a season? Ok.

There's no way Fisher should be behind Linehan and Spagnuolo.

Vermeil should be #1 until McVay wins his second Super Bowl....

....so at the end of next year, then? :sneaky:

We had a poll like this a while back I did, I'm tempted to pull up and bump...

I'd say for current times:
  1. Dick Vermeil. He earns it with the sole Super Bowl title
  2. Chuck Knox. Five division titles in a row in the '70's. Not bad.
  3. John Robinson. Our winningest coach. Most playoff victories. Flew under the radar in the shadow of the Whiners of the '80s.
  4. Ray Malavasi. took the Rams to their fist Super Bowl, and kept Knox's teams competitive for a stretch.
  5. George Allen. Most of his legendary status is with the Foreskins. Had some good years, though with the Rams.
  6. Adam Walsh. Championship with Cleveland Rams '45.
  7. Mike Martz. Gotta give Mad Mike credit for much of the GSOT, and would have a title, but for the cheating bastards from New England.
  8. Sean McVay. Sure to skyrocket up this list. But his first year already makes him worthy of being among the greats. If he just does what we think he will this year, I have him anywhere from #1-5 this time next year.
  9. Joe Stydahar. Led Rams in first title in the city of Los Angeles, 1950.
  10. Jeff Fisher. Earns some respect from me. Took the Rams to respectability again. Just couldn't get over the hump. All joking aside, I still hurt for the man.

Hard to argue with your top 5 there, Farr.

And I agree that McVay is on track to eventually unseat even Vermiel one day. I’m at a loss for words to say how impressed I am with our young current coach.

Yes, he should be #1 offensive coordinator...Vermeil & Martz together, apart, not as good for both...And that goes for Hamp Pool, who was the Mike Martz of the 50's. Without Hamp Pool, Joe Stydahar and the Los Angeles Rams do not win the NFL Championship in 1951.

FWIW the first Rams Head Coach was Hugo Bezdek and Bezdek is the only man to be a Head Coach in the NFL (Cleveland Rams) and a MLB Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates..
