Rams coach Sean McVay says L.A. will look at adding RB in NFL Draft
ByChris Reed

What a difference a year can make. More than any other team entering last season, the Los Angeles Rams appeared to be set at running back with what they had in Todd Gurley and backup Malcolm Brown.

Brown will play behind Gurley again in 2019 after the Rams matched his offer sheet in free agency, but the position is a bit more precarious than it was a season ago. Brown’s role could see a sizable increase after last season ended with Gurley suffering through a mysterious knee injury, which has been reported to be arthritic in nature.

Brown has seen his time on the injury list as well, coming off surgery to repair a broken clavicle. The late-season injury precipitated the signing of Anderson after Gurley’s left knee required medical attention during a December loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Coach Sean McVay added to the intrigue surrounding his backfield, saying his team won’t rule out selecting a back in the upcoming NFL Draft, which begins on Thursday.

“We’ll look to see if there’s a player that adds some value at that position,” McVay said via the LA Times. “When that would be is hard to say, but I think you’re always looking for more playmakers.”

McVay specified the team would look into a change-of-pace back, someone who is also an adept receiver out of the backfield. The Rams thought they had that when the team signed Lance Dunbar before the 2017 season, but Dunbar never fully recovered from a lingering knee injury.

For next season, the Rams have four backs under contract: Gurley, Brown, Justin Davis, and John Kelly.

Nothing new, won’t be our first pick though. I’d love to have Anderson from OK. Think he’ll be drafted in the 3rd?

You should have seen the headline somebody posted this article with on reddit hahaha. Something to the affect that McVay guarantees a first round RB.

Any RB the Rams put in their backfield will have to be good at pass protection. That is the only reason Kelly did not see the field last season, hopefully he shows improvement in that area because he is very good at running and catching the ball.

You are so right about him needing to improve his pass protection and if he does he has a very good chance of getting serious playing time because Brown has trouble staying healthy.

They are looking at adding many things. What they could use for 2019 - and will likely need by 2020 - exceeds their draft picks. RB, TE, backup QB, at least 1 OL this year, and likely 2, possibly a WR if the talent is there at the right pick, DE, NT, ILB, Edge, Safety, at least 1 CB (and maybe 2). They have 7 picks. It all depends on what value is available when they pick. No matter which positions they pick, some will be unhappy that other positions weren't addressed.

All this, and the Rams are a good team.

And a DT, and a OT, and a OG, and a OC, and a S, and a CB, and a DE, and a OLB, and a ILB ..................................

It's become the nature of the NFL that you have shorter windows of time for all positions to have to find replacements for all but, a few players. You can make a case for almost all positions for the Rams except QB and Punter. Even JZ only has this year remaining on his contract. Both starting CBs Talib and Peters are in the last year of their contracts. After this year Kupp and JJ will be in their last year under contract. It seems to be never ending. This draft is so interesting and important from a Rams perspective because of expiring contacts and depth needs at both offensive and defensive lines. In a way it's hard to mess this draft up because the Rams have limited needs this year but, many over the next couple of years. It's a draft with seemingly infinite possibilities that every Rams fan should be prepared for.

What about a QB? I was told we're letting Goff walk after his rookie deal.

Well, STARTING QB. Their backup will be gone, signing quality backup QBs cost as much as decent starters at most positions, and most rookie QBs really need a season to be ready to not be a disaster if they have to play. So getting a backup QB to prepare to be ready from 2020-2022 is fairly important too. Not a high pick, but something that they are looking at, based on the interviews. Depends on who falls to the Rams, which holes they will actually fill. But yeah, punter, kicker, and long snapper positions are likely set.

That proves my point lol.

I was going to mention the backup QB but, went on to others and didn't get back to it. No doubt filling that position is important. Rams lucked in on Bortles. The money backup veteran types get is not peanuts.

Lol — there you go again with the QB !!
What was the bet I wanted to make with you ?? No QB in this draft ??

Time is getting close , but QB is still out of the question. — John Wolford,Allen,& Bortles is all they need this season.
You can expand it. Goff was just signed for next season as well. Then it’s time to get serious?? A team can only have so many QB’s ?? Will be interesting with the Niners roster come 9- -19.
The Rams are more likely to draft a RB.

Also in the McVay whatchamacallit show on nfl Net. Rich Eisen show he talked about Gurley playing through the Philly game.

Reggie & McVay have to know better than risking a player when hurt. It’s called game management. As a Fantasy Player I thought Gurley was done for that game when they had it almost secure. Also in the standings it didn’t make much sense. He was never the same after that.
McVay talked about Gurley being banged up against Oakland as well.TG playing the way he has after his Georgia career is pretty amazing. The fact The Rams got him at 10 surprised me. Les Snead doesn’t value RB’s that high usually. There was The I. Pead draft pick.

If they aren't at least considering a QB, why have they interviewed a half dozen or so? Did they just feel like wasting time?
