Well at least there's gonna be a ton of competition. Hopefully they keep Bona far away from the decision on who wins. :ROFLMAO:

So we have 3 punters 2 kickers and 3 long snappers? I guess McSnead is saying no mas on defense and offense.

My point exactly when posters on here were making fun of Jake McQuaid like he was some kind of a clown or something.

McQuaid's consistency was pretty amazing.
And even though he was only about 250 lbs., he always gave the punter and the holder time to get the play off.

Always.

Thus the reason for claiming Orzech, more experience then the others & has a history with the special team coach. I like this move

I think people are making way too much of this. When was there ever a run on long snappers in an NFL draft? Was one ever picked before round five or six? Was one ever even drafted?
There are about 255 college football programs compared to 32 NFL teams, most of whom don’t need an easy to find long snapper more than once every 8 years or so. I’ve watched a lot of college football in my life and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game that I said,” man that long snapper is just terrible”

But I’ve seen a bunch of centers in the NFL that couldn’t hike it consistently to their quarterback in the shotgun. And yet we don’t see them routinely losing their jobs.

A center has much more to do than just snap the ball. A long snapper pretty much has to consistently snap the ball and then block the guy in front of him for about two seconds from reaching the kicker or punter that is ten yards behind him. He doesn't have to block Aaron Donald types either. Long snappers can range in size. They don't have to be 300 plus and need to block in two phases of the game against bigger and faster D linemen.

Its an easier, more limited combination of skills. Thus it isn't usually difficult to fill the spot.

Sounds like a history exists with DeCamllis.

Orzech was LS in Jacksonville 2019. In 2020 he lost the LS battle to rookie long snapper Ross Matiscik. Which is curious, considering Orzech beat out mainstay Matt Overton to win the job in 2019.

2020 he moved to Indianapolis, I assume for CoVid contingency.

Not sure it changes things, other than more competition.

A tale of two Matty Os: Jaguars go with younger Matt Orzech to replace Matt Overton

Matt Overton was the Jaguars’ long snapper for 20 games covering two seasons, after playing 90 consecutive games in five seasons for Indianapolis.

He appeared to have a good rapport with punter Logan Cooke and kicker Josh Lambo, and no one can remember a bad snap on a punt or kick that mattered to the outcome.

So why did the Jags cut him and sign Matt Orzech, a rookie from Azusa Pacific who was cut by the Baltimore Ravens?

Apparently, it all came down to what Jaguars coach Doug Marrone, general manager Dave Caldwell and executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin saw of Orzech during joint practices between the Jags and the Ravens during the first week of August, and the preseason game between the two teams.

And it wasn’t that Overton did anything wrong. The Jags’ front office apparently felt Orzech was better.

“With Matt [Orzech], we were in Baltimore ... we felt good ... we liked him,” Marrone said earlier this week. “We thought he could come in and help, thought he could help us from a protection standpoint. We made a decision to go with him.”

The Jaguars did not have a blocked punt last season and had one blocked placement kick.

It wasn’t about money. Overton, an eighth-year pro, would have been a $444,706 salary cap hit this season, and Orzech will be $495,000.

So what was the problem -- especially since the Jaguars re-signed Overton in March to keep him from becoming a free agent. Overton filled in for Carson Tinker over parts of the last two seasons and the Jaguars released Tinker as part of a cap-clearing series of cuts over the winter. Tinker would have counted $860,000 to the cap.

“We saw [Orzech] him in Baltimore, we played against him,” Marrone repeated. “We were tracking him, watching him, and at the end of the day, we just felt that he was better.”

Orzech, at 6 feet 3 and 246 pounds, is listed at 2 inches taller than Overton but only 2 pounds heavier.

But there is also the age factor: Orzech, at 24, is 10 years younger than Overton.

Overton was cut a week after he offered to buy Indianapolis Colts season tickets from fans who had contacted the team and demanded a refund after the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck. Overton said he would donate any of those tickets to the Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

Relatively speaking, it wouldn't have cost that much to retain McQuaid and he was reliable as f*ck. Pennywise and pound foolish not retaining the guy, imo.

While I agree, it could have been that with McQuaide, now being 33, they might be looking for someone that offers more from an athletic standpoint and can hold up better when the opposition is in punt block formation. Also McQuaide will be 34 in December, so maybe the thought of going younger & more athletic was the feeling internally.

I've never heard that Jake was deficient in any way, have you? A contract for a couple of years would have been ok I think before any serious drop off due to age. It's not like he's Aaron Donald out there for 80 % of all defensive snaps (guesstimate)

I think it's because Snead is offended by paying any more than the vet minimum for the position, even though the guy went to the Pro Bowl not that long ago, just as I think they don't really value Centers. We like toys in LA and that's how I see it.

IDK, they've been paying McQuaide for a while, I just think they look at the age and determine if it's time to move on. Now again, I loved McQuaide and would have extended him, but IMO, age and a new special team coach that might have wanted somebody else could also been factored in. Of course the cap is also a consideration as you so astutely pointed out.
