- The Rams returned to the practice field on Tuesday and the excellent weather stayed in place for a solid afternoon workout for coach Jeff Fisher and Co.
- Let’s hit the injuries real quick first.
- Fisher said Monday he hoped to get WR Brandon Gibson, S Darian Stewart and CB Bradley Fletcher back this week. It didn’t happen Tuesday as all sat out once again.
- In fact, CB Trumaine Johnson joined that group on the sideline with an undisclosed issue though it didn’t seem to be anything serious.
- C Scott Wells, WR Danario Alexander and DT Trevor Laws also continue to sit out.
- [hil]Some guests in the host today with outstanding caches to talk to the players and observe practice. Big Game Torry Holt was in the house and spent some times in a meeting with receivers. Aeneas Williams did the same with the defensive backs.[/hil]
- Barry Richardson continued to get most of the work with the first team offense at right tackle. Jason Smith worked with the second team. That competition is heating up as you can read in the story on the front page.
- The Rams did some mixing and matching with the line, in part to ease Rodger Saffold back into action at LT. For the bulk of practice, the Rams used Saffold at LT, Quinn Ojinnaka at LG, Robert Turner at C, Harvey Dahl at RG and Richardson at RT. BUT, there was a little bit of a twist today…
- Rookie Rokevious Watkins is starting to turn some heads, even drawing praise from Fisher after practice. He got his first work of this camp at LG and did it with the first team offense for a short spell. When Watkins was in was when Saffold was out and the Rams were mixing things up with Ojinnaka kicking out to LT and Bryan Mattison at RG but it’s still worth noting that Watkins seems to be making some headway. We’ll keep an eye on that as the werek goes on.
- It was only a matter of time but rookie K Greg Zuerlein was successful in his third attempt of this camp to hit from 64 yards out. The booming kick hit the crossbar bounced up in the air and fell through the uprights to applause from his teammates. What a leg.
- Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was NOT pleased with his group during one portion of seven on seven where his guys had four consecutive drops on easily catchable balls. Not a pretty sight.
- Thankfully, rookie WR Brian Quick made up for some of his teammates miscues with one of his better days of camp. He made some long catches in team drills and even caught a touchdown in the right corner.
- Rookie QB Austin Davis hit WR Mike Campbell with a perfect deep ball down the middle for a touchdown with the third unit.
- Backup QB Tom Brandstater finally got some reps with the offense today, working with the third group a bit in 7 on 7s.
- Quick and Chris Givens both got a few looks with the first team offense. Expect to see more of that in the coming days and especially in the remaining preseason contests.
- Great to see all of the quarterbacks and nearly all of the receivers staying about 20 minutes after practice and working on timing on the far field. Timing is going to be important to get sooner than later and it seemed to be off at times against the Colts.
- We already know that RB Steven Jackson is a tremendous leader revered by his teammates but here’s another example of what makes him so great. At the end of practice, the Rams did some sprints for conditioning drills. One Ram was singled out to run a sprint by himself for an unknown miscue. Jackson didn’t let his teammate run alone, completing the run in lockstep with his teammate. Jackson probably didn’t have to do any sprints if he didn’t want to but there he was doing extra to support a young teammate.
