Rams at Whiners (21 Dec 2019) OL Pass Plays

This will be only the passing game. Having a bored inside day due to thunderstorms so think I can get through these and I chose this game due to the quality of the DL we faced up front. Figured it would be nice to see how McVay put together one of his finest scheming jobs of 2019, and the big picture of the reliance on a moving pocket as well as quick passes/screens.

Rams passed 46 times in this game. The Boots & Quick Passes will be single stills. The Dropbacks we'll go more in depth to see how the pass pro looked.

Pass play #1 (BOOT & quick pass to Woody).

Ok so now we get to the first dropback pass. Exciting stuff!

Pass play #6 (DROPBACK shot to Cooks down sideline)

Pre-Snap

At the snap Higs at the top will run a rub route with Cooks but the timing will be a bit off

At the drop we can see the route developing and the line looks pretty good except for Blythe struggling to hold Thomas in the backfield in the middle of the pocket

At the throw Cooks is still angling to the sideline where Higs and his DB won't be in position to help him. Goff might have rushed the throw, or maybe Cooks ran it wrong hard to say but it ends in an incompletion

From the OL perspective here's some stills of the pass pro which is good with the exception of Blythe

Armstead & Buckner lined up at 3T, Thomas at zero, 54 will engage Corbett to isolate Blythe

At the snap Thomas already has great position on Blythe

Blythe recovers and moves him out of Goff's range

At the fake it looks like Gurley notes 24 blitzing off the edge and adjusts

At the drop Armstead (91) has beaten Evans

At the throw Higs is assisting Evans in pushing Armstead out of the play behind Goff. Sherman is beat here and Goff reads it but for whatever reason Cooks and Goff not on same page

The pass hits the grass at the 42

At the drop things are breaking down on the right side of the line. Goff about to be flushed before the routes are ready

Goff flushes with Armstead in pursuit, only real option is Higs left side of the field but Goff doesn't see him

Goff goes with the tougher throw to Woody and drops a dime for a big gainer along the sideline

The coaches' film is awesome yeah. I love being able to see the secondary and the way the film is partitioned each play shows two views.

Obviously, I can't say with certainty, but it seems like Cooks blew this option. I'm not sure why he wouldn't run the 9 there. He has Sherman stacked with a step and no safety in position to help. Meanwhile, Sherman and another defender are both playing underneath.

Gurley's motion is fake, he's assigned to pass block here I assume and 57 slows up off the edge because he expects TG

Not sure what TG is doing here

At the throw protections still good, Woody starting a hard cut on the top of his route

As Woody gets his head around the ball is incoming but a foot out of his reach for the incompletion

Pre-Snap Goff sees his bread 'n butter... Single high safety and man underneath, 9ers respecting the run here

At the snap Goff has 6 rushers incoming

At the drop Goff is in trouble, looks like Kupp is the hot but very unlikely he'd convert so Jared is waiting for Higs to turn but there won't be time

Goff wisely throws it away here to avoid the sack

Route combinations there were shitty for the blitz call IMO.

At the snap the 9ers drop their OLBs in shallow zone and bring 4

Goff knows they have Witherspoon on Woody with no safety over the top and he has time to let it develop

Woody has him beat here and Goff sees it

Here we can see our wideouts have the safety in a world of shit, but Goff doesn't have time to make them pay and has to settle for Higs underneath. He makes a nice throw here with Armstead in his face
