After some back and forth with @jrry32 and looking at what the Rams FO has done sends a message that they want to be aggressive in winning now. And that has to address the QB position. Keenum is a very good backup, but I have to agree with @jrry32 that he's not a full time starter.

Before I post my trade which includes a bit of a half round Mock, let me just post some observations as prelude.

The Rams are being aggressive. It would be inconsistent for them to send away mainstays like Chris Long (who may return to form after some unlucky injuries) and James Laurinitis (who had to play on a bum arm after Ogletree went down and then got dinged for playing with one wing for 10 games) and then engage in half measures in other areas.

Most of the FA QBs we talked about won't be available. The only one left we talked about that hasn't already basically found a home and honestly I'm not sold that Chase Daniels is PROVEN to be better over a season than Keenum. That's a projection. If Chase Daniels was a proven starter, he wouldn't be behind Alex Smith in KC who's not exactly 2013 Peyton Manning.

Which takes us to the draft where there's plenty of chance we get Aced out of the top 3 picks. Not that that bothers me because I don't see Goff or Lynch as options for us.

Goff, I don't see for us because I see him as a quick deciding West Coast QB and we just hired Groh to go with Boras to install the Manning/Gase offense and to move away from the WC. Goff doesn't have the arm for the new offense.

Lynch isn't going to play this year and the aggressive nature of the moves predicate a move for someone who's going to be productive this year.

Thus, my thinking. What scenario would allow us to get a QB? Is there one?

Yes. Carson Wentz not only fits us, but fits us like a freaking glove. I'd say he's worth much more than this trade scenario, but he'd be worth making the starter from Day 1 and working hard to make it work.

But how to make it work?

Several things have to fall into place which I will talk about in the Mock. First, the Trade:

Los Angeles Rams trade: 2016 1st Round (15) and both 2nd round picks (43) (45) to the Dallas Cowboys for their 1st Round pick (4) and their 4th round pick (98). The value of the Rams picks is 1970 and the Cowboys picks is 1904. That premium isn't terrible for trading up for a QB. They gain a pick and the value of a middling 4th in the bargain. In a draft with big depth in the front seven, to end up with 3 picks in the second will allow the Cowboys to really restock.

DRAFT:

Tennessee Titans:
Laremy Tunsil, OT. Tennessee can get DL help at the top of the second, but they can't get this help where they need it most there. Joey Bosa is surely tempting, but as someone in Tennessee noted (I'm paraphrasing), "in the SB, the team that won protected the QB and got to the QB".

Cleveland Browns:
Jared Goff, QB. Hue Jackson needs a field general and while Wentz tempts him greatly, the decision making of Goff wins him over as does his confidence which will be needed because retooling the "factory of sadness" won't be an easy fix.

San Diego Chargers:
Joey Bosa, DE. This card is waiting at the table as soon as Tunsil is taken by the Titans. The Chargers are holding their breath, hoping a blockbuster trade doesn't happen. It won't and they get their DROY candidate.

Los Angeles Rams:
Carson Wentz, QB. Fisher and Snead went big and decided to go all in on offense, forgoing two 2nd round choices in pursuing the guy they think can be the Franchise QB to go with their Franchise RB. The Rams FO hopes his athleticism, big arm and touch will take this offense and the team to the playoffs and beyond.

.
.
.
Dallas Cowboys
Paxton Lynch, QB Jones and crew realize they need someone to train with huge upside. This guy could be their guy. They've seen life without Romo and it's no life at all. They need a plan and they can't wait until he's down/out to try to find one. With three 2nd round picks, they can go all defense and still get potential starters.

Now... I realize that this is pretty slim. A number of things have to happen, but having one path to a QB beats none...

And this is a legit path as opposed to hoping Wentz/Goff/Lynch falls to 15 without trades...

I'd take that Mack, because having a QB like Wentz onboard would be well worth it, but would prefer to give up next year's round 1 pick and keep this year's round 2 picks. There are going to be some round 1 quality defenders as well as some receivers that can help us next season at both those picks in round 2. They are very, very valuable to our hopes of winning next season and I would not part with more than one of them.

If they go for 1st this year and 1st next, I'd do that, too.

How about going to the top for this year's 1st, next year's 1st, and Philly's 2nd? Cutting straight through the BS and getting their guy with 100% certainty?

Agreed. We really need those 2nd round picks to snag a WR and maybe Henry at TE. We need to keep at least one of those picks.

I highly doubt Tennessee makes that deal, though they need the picks because they need the OL and after Tunsil, the drop off is substantial.

I mean, they MAY do it, but they had a big issue protecting Mariota last year, so I dunno that they pass up a chance to get that guy at #1 who can anchor the blindside.

Cleveland is going to get the QB. Short of fleecing the Rams like we fleeced Washington, not gonna happen...

The Chargers is a possible trading partner, but they're not going to take a QB, so unless we think someone is going to trade with them for Wentz, I can't see it. And considering they're probably looking at the chance to get Joey Bosa.... It would take a big, big trade for them to give him up.

Which is why I targeted Dallas.

I could see possibilities, but none are remotely likely. Tunsil, Goff, Bosa would be a really solid and almost predictable 1,2,3.

IF... IF it went that way, the trade would make sense. I dunno if it makes sense to try to trade up to 1 and if we tried, I think Tennessee would look for 3 #1s ... because we established the market. I dunno if that was such a good thing overall.

I worry that Daniel Jeremiah will be right short of trades...

» Previous Jeremiah mock drafts: Jan. 17
  1. Pick No.
    1

    Laremy Tunsil
    OT
    Mississippi
The Titans could really use an impact defensive player, but protecting Marcus Mariota is No. 1 on the to-do list.
  2. Pick No.
    2

    Carson Wentz
    QB
    North Dakota St.

The Browns have no choice but to address the QB position and Wentz is built to play in the AFC North.
  3. Pick No.
    3

    Jalen Ramsey
    CB
    Florida St.
The Chargers could look at the DL with this choice, but Ramsey would be an outstanding replacement for Eric Weddle.
  4. Pick No.
    4

    Myles Jack
    OLB
    UCLA

The Cowboys are in a great spot to draft Tony Romo's successor, but they could opt to load up and make a championship run in 2016.
  5. Pick No.
    5

    Joey Bosa
    DE
    Ohio St.

The Jaguars need to address the defense and Bosa could team up with last year's top pick, Dante Fowler Jr., to produce a dynamic pass rush.
  6. Pick No.
    6

    DeForest Buckner
    DE
    Oregon
The Ravens usually stick to their draft board and take the best player available. Buckner has a high ceiling and a high floor.
  7. Pick No.
    7

    Jared Goff
    QB
    California

There's a lot of buzz about the 49ers' growing faith in Blaine Gabbert, but it would take considerable courage to bypass a talented signal-caller in your own backyard.
  8. Pick No.
    8

    Jaylon Smith
    OLB
    Notre Dame
Even if Smith has to miss a portion of the the 2016 campaign, he's worthy of a top-10 selection.
  9. Pick No.
    9

    Vernon Hargreaves
    CB
    Florida
The Bucs need to add a playmaker to the back end, and Hargreaves has very good ball skills.
  10. Pick No.
    10

    Noah Spence
    DE
    Eastern Kentucky

Spence comes with some baggage, but he's a very gifted edge rusher and he would provide a much-needed lift to the Giants' defensive front.
  11. Pick No.
    11

    Darron Lee
    OLB
    Ohio St.
The Bears need to add some speed and athleticism to the linebacker spot and Lee is supremely explosive.
  12. Pick No.
    12

    Sheldon Rankins
    DT
    Louisville

Rankins was dominant at the Senior Bowl and he would provide the Saints with a very disruptive interior presence.
  13. Pick No.
    13

    Vernon Butler
    DT
    Louisiana Tech
The buzz on Butler is building following an outstanding week at the Senior Bowl.
  14. Pick No.
    14

    Ezekiel Elliott
    RB
    Ohio St.

Oakland has a solid young running back in Latavius Murray, but Elliot is an elite talent and too good to pass up.
  15. Pick No.
    15

    Paxton Lynch
    QB
    Memphis

Lynch would fit nicely alongside a very young offensive nucleus in Los Angeles.
  16. Pick No.
    16

    Ronnie Stanley
    OT
    Notre Dame
The Lions have some good young pieces on the offensive line and Stanley would be a nice upgrade at left tackle.
  17. Pick No.
    17

    Leonard Floyd
    OLB
    Georgia
I'd love to see Floyd and Vic Beasley rushing from opposite sides. That would be some serious speed coming off the edge.
  18. Pick No.
    18

    Jack Conklin
    OT
    Michigan St.
Conklin isn't flashy, but he's very reliable, tough and instinctive.
  19. Pick No.
    19

    Laquon Treadwell
    WR
    Mississippi

Treadwell would be a perfect complement to Sammy Watkins.
  20. Pick No.
    20

    Reggie Ragland
    ILB
    Alabama
Ragland would put up monster numbers playing behind the Jets' talented defensive line.
  21. Pick No.
    21

    Robert Nkemdiche
    DT
    Mississippi

The Redskins continue to build through the trenches and secure one of the most talented defenders in the draft.
  22. Pick No.
    22

    Taylor Decker
    OT
    Ohio St.
The Texans could look at a WR here, but Decker is a plug-and-play starter at tackle.
  23. Pick No.
    23

    Corey Coleman
    WR
    Baylor

Coleman would team up with Stefon Diggs to provide Teddy Bridgewater with two young and explosive playmakers.
  24. Pick No.
    24

    Vonn Bell
    FS
    Ohio St.
Bell lacks ideal size, but he's very instinctive and he gets his hands on a lot of footballs.
  25. Pick No.
    25

    Mackensie Alexander
    CB
    Clemson
The Steelers need to add some youth to the back end and Alexander is very polished and physical.
  26. Pick No.
    26

    A'Shawn Robinson
    DT
    Alabama
The Seahawks could take some hits in free agency at the position and Robinson has enormous upside.
  27. Pick No.
    27

    Kevin Dodd
    DE
    Clemson
The Packers need to get younger and more athletic off the edge. Dodd is just scratching the surface of his potential.
  28. Pick No.
    28

    Jarran Reed
    DT
    Alabama
Reed can dominate against the run and he has some upside as a pass rusher.
  29. Pick No.
    29

    Kamalei Correa
    DE
    Boise St.
Correa has a great get-off, plenty of production and an unrelenting motor.
  30. Pick No.
    30

    Eli Apple
    CB
    Ohio St.
Apple has great size and he would fit well into the scheme in Carolina.
  31. Pick No.
    31

    Andrew Billings
    NT
    Baylor

The Titans do need defense and that Philly pick is likely going to net a round 1 talent on defense in the front 7. That's how deep this class is defensively and they get the player now for next season.

So yeah no way to know if they'd jump at it but I think that is the ballpark for a move to 1 overall. 1 overall is roughly worth 3000. The two round 1 picks averaged at 15 are worth roughly 2100, the round 2 pick with defensive value in this draft puts the Rams in the running for the move up IMO, it would come down to whether anyone else makes a better offer. But at least give it a shot eh?

Regardless of which guy they like, I prefer they be ready to ensure they get him. No effin around. No giving Cleveland a chance to screw up their plan. Go all the way up if they want Wentz or Goff.

And really same deal with Lynch... IF he's their guy be ready at a minimum to move ahead of Philly. And if it's Cook? Well, be damn sure before you try to drop down and get better value, because you're not the only team that will be looking hard at him and getting ahead of the Rams would be a goal for a team picking after them.

Normally future picks are valued as if they are one round lower - so trading next year's first is the equivalent to a second this year.

And going from #1 to #15 in the draft is a huge drop, especially since there are some legitimate stud prospects at the top of the draft.

I suppose it's possible that Tennessee takes less than normal for their pick - but if they're giving a bargain, they could do so, still pick up a bunch of picks, and get a better pick than #15 in return.

If that is all they give up then sure. But I don't think Hue Jackson takes Goff over Wentz. If Dallas ends up with Lynch at 15 I would be sick after giving up the picks. I think Lynch will end up being a good QB.

Lynch definitely has the strongest arm of the bunch, but Im not sure any of these kids are going to do much I think in the pros. I would put all of them far behind either of last years 1st round QBs, and that seems to be the consensus.

I have a sinking feeling Fisher could go with someone like Dak Prescott, it fits the mold of what he has had success with in the past, and a running QB might actually be able to do enough to save his job for one season. I remember Brian Billick talking about how behind the scenes coaches talk to one another about being in do or die situations they tend to draft what helps them keep their job over whats best for the team.

Well what really sucks is the Cards were tweeted re: considering life after Carson. They're gonna be looking QB as well and taking advantage of a very deep QB draft.

QB is always a pain man, you just cannot count on your guy being where you think he's gonna be. That's true of all positions, I realize, but QB way moreso than the others.

If that's what it takes, that's what it takes. But it seems like Goff is less and less likely to go #2.

Sounds like a deal I'd make, though giving them a 2nd and 3rd and not getting the 4th back would be preferable IMO.

Like I said from day 1 here, Wentz is the best QB, and you can't simply assume Cle won't take him. Wentz has the cold weather résume Cle "should want"...
So its Tenn or bust, so take me to another place (great sound btw). If you want YOUR GUY lock it up and make it happen. Wentz will start in year 1. Hell Fisher even has the balls to bench him a few games IF its needed. You need to peak in mid Dec folks. So if its 3-1st & Philly's 2nd, & our 3rd this year so be it.
Is the price too high maybe, But if you love him you do it!

Yup, IMHO Wentz is worth it.

Best Arm, can throw deep, deep outs along w/ mid range touch, body size w/ 10' hands!, Athleticism. Ran some what of a pro style system (So part of the learning curve has been built in as he needed to go through progression reads) Smart and a leader. No off field issues or red flags.
So draft him Snead
