The LA Rams’ offense has been struggling mightily this season and the reasons are troubling.

Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus posted a tweet that listed the grades of the bottom five offensive lines in the NFL and the Los Angeles Rams were 32nd, below the hapless Cincinnati Bengals and even, gasp, the Miami Dolphins. What is happening? Are we in the Matrix and no one told me?

Monson mentioned in a reply to this tweet that the lowest graded OL on the LA Rams are RG Jamil Demby and RG Austin Blythe. The latter is troubling because Blythe played so well last season and it seemed like it he was a trustworthy lineman that the Rams could depend on to protect QB Jared Goff and to open up the run game.
Another concerning aspect to the offensive line is the deteriorating play of RT Rob Havenstein.

While EDGE Shaquil Barrett has been playing lights out this season, this play by Havenstein is ridiculous. During the broadcast, Rams fans rightly pointed the finger at Goff for throwing a bad pass, but upon closer inspection, the blocking let him down as well.
It’s a team game and everyone needs to play their part. Goff needs to execute his reads and be accurate, but Havenstein can’t leave the door open for intruders to rob the place blind.

I’m highlighting Havenstein because I don’t think this is just a problem with inexperienced lineman like C Brian Allen and LG Joseph Noteboom who just need more in-game snaps. Havenstein is a 27 year-old veteran — he should be leading by example with LT Andrew Whitworth. And maybe after the week 4 embarrassment against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he’ll turn it around and get back to his dominant play.

On a macro-level, the offensive line just seems to have a lack of focus. Coach Aaron Kromer was promoted in the offseason to run-game coordinator, which means he’s no longer just the offensive line coach. But since he’s keeping track of the run game, what exactly is he doing? I don’t want to be a dick about it, but is he catching up on Succession on his tablet on the sidelines? Seriously, they ran the ball 11 times. OK, maybe I do want to be a dick about it.
With the short week, the Rams don’t have too much time to sit around and reconstruct their philosophy with the O-line — they just need to block. Sounds easy, right?
Well, if the Rams want to turn around their offensive line, it starts in Seattle on Thursday Night Football, in front of everyone and against our hated rivals, the Seahawks.
This week 5 performance could telegraph to Rams fans just how long this season is going to be.

The interception by Barrett should have never happened. We should have taken a time out instead of trying to get the play in. They timed a blitz off of the play clock because it was about to run out and Goff tried to make something happen when he should have simply signaled time out and walk to the sideline. That is one difference this year. We leave the huddle later where our motion or shifts aren't distracting the defenses.

Just my thoughts.....

Most of the defenses they faced, didn’t play the same 6-1 that we are seeing a lot of this year. They feared the run and play action. That made the Rams Oline look better than it was. But since Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia and New England, every other team has realized that the Rams line isn’t all that great. In fact it is even worse than last year.

What is more disturbing than the shoddy line play is that McVay and company had all offseason to make some changes to the offense, to deal with a high pressure pass rush that is also taking away the outside runs. All I’ve seen so far is an occasional inside run. Is that it? I fully expected the coaches to have an answer. This isn’t some new and innovative defense that cannot be beat.

To havensteins credit, he has faced Elite rushers in Cam Jordan, Myles Garrett and Barrett, all of which are elite Rushers playing lights out vs the league. The Game plan needs to Help Havenstein vs speed rushers. Havenstein is the best run blocking RT out there but his weakness is pass blocking vs speed.

Blythe is getting picked on and that’s BS, overall he grades out very good from my game review, though i haven’t analyzed the Bucs game.

Whitworth has fallen off some and Noteboom is a first year starter making rookie mistakes.

If i’m Kromer i consider Noteboom and Havenstein swapping spots. I guarantee there would be running room on the left side and better pass pro from the RT spot.

That is literally a full 180 from last year.

I must say that you gotta take PFF with a huge frain of salt. Their method of grading is far from perfect in many cases. But interesting none the less. If you know nothing about a player then they're a good place to start but that's about it.

--- if that's the case Goff must be a gun to fire 500+ yards with the worst offensive line in football -- yet the same media is calling him hopeless as well ??

I think many are ignoring how good Tampa's D-Line looked.

Let's see the O-Line redeem themselves against the seahags !!

I do agree they were bad last game and at times very bad. But other than havs blunders allen and boom have just made beginner mistakes and that should get better. Thing that bothers me the mosr is we aren't giving our Oline help.

Shocking

Yeah but it’s still on Goff

Coulda swore I heard on the radio...yesterday that the pass pro yielded 29 pressures

Even Gurley accounted for 5

PFF is a fraud and even top NFL coaches have said as much for years. They claim to watch and grade every play of every game. That is total BS or it proves they don't know what they are watching. Their metric was designed for another game not NFL Football. That would be like applying NFL analysis to soccer, how would that work? It's why after one year with them I have never gone back.

I was a fan for the SD Chargers for years and they have had historically bad o-lines. They had a LG that was an absolute turnstile. Yet every week he graded out above average. Their analysis and grades smell worse than my cat's farts.

Why do you think so many of these media pundits are so bad with their prognostications? You can tell when they are parroting PFF or laughingly when they use PFF as a source to validate something. I would wager there are people on this board who know more about NFL football and the players than PFF.

Typically I would agree with your assessment regarding PFF, but occasionally they do come within a residue of actuality (residue mind you)

But in this isolated assessment

I’m going to have to...agree

And that after watching thee entire game for the third time

Did Goff miss a couple of important throws? Yes, but it’s not like he was sitting in a remotely clean pocket

OLine got it handed to them vs Tampa

Shit happens

Let’s see how they respond Thursday night under the bright lights

Hey even a blind dog finds a bone occasionally. Odds are even guessing they will be right occasionally. But they sell their word as gold and it's not.

If we dont get the run game going, how will our offense get back to dominance? Were are playing young, inexperienced, late round lineman who are facing non stop 6 man fronts and blitzes.

McVay has not deployed any new wrinkles to get the run game going. Its actually laughable at this point. Until we start running the ball consistently, which seems impossible with the talent up front, our offense will suffer. We are one OL injury away from total nightmare status, but we're already ranked dead last. Think about that.

Can we finally agree Blythe and Demby are not starting material and move on? I’ve been on Blythes ass since the SB! I’m not sold on him one bit. Guy has poor form and even worse technique it seems.

I drank the Kool-Aid sparingly when it came to the o-line and thought they might be middle of the pack but this has been atrocious! It’s like Goff is having flashbacks to when Fisher was head coach and our O-Line couldn’t protect him from a pee wee football team.

Shits ridiculous.

Totally disagree about them swapping spots.
