First Look: Rams host Patriots on Thursday Night Football

The Los Angeles Rams (8-4) host the New England Patriots (6-6) on Thursday Night Football looking for their second-straight win following Sunday's victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Kickoff from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. is scheduled for 5:20 p.m. pacific time on FOX, NFL Network and Amazon Prime Video.

In advance of the contest, here is your first look at Rams-Patriots on Dec. 10 presented by Bud Light, including notable Patriots additions, some of New England's top statistical performers in Week 13 and key storylines.

Notable Patriots additions

Signed former Panthers QB Cam Newton to a one-year deal on July 8. While he hasn't contributed much in the passing game – 190 of 285 for 2,053 yards with five touchdowns and nine interceptions – he's been very effective as a runner. Newton's 11 rushing touchdowns are tied with Washington running back Antonio Gibson for third-most in the NFL, and he's on pace to break his own record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season in NFL history.

Re-signed K Nick Folk. Signed midway through the 2019 season as a replacement for the injury Stephen Gostkowski, Folk made 16 of 19 field goal attempts and 13 of 13 extra point attempts in eight games (seven regular season plus one postseason). That performance was strong enough for New England to bring him back and sign him to the practice squad – along with 2020 fifth-round pick Justin Rohrwasser – this fall following Gostkowski's release in the spring. In 12 games this season, Folk has made 20 of 22 field goal attempts and 26 of 28 extra point attempts.

Top performers in Week 13

Newton completed 12 of 19 pass attempts for 69 yards and one touchdown in a 45-0 win over the Chargers, also rushing for two scores. Relieving Newton midway through the fourth quarter, backup Jared Stidham completed 2 of 3 passes for 61 yards and one touchdown in limited action.

RB Damien Harris led New England's backfield with 16 carries for 80 yards, with Newton adding 14 for 48 and RB Sony Michel 10 for 35. New England as a team had 165 net rushing yards, which accounted for more than half their total yards of offense (291).

WR N'Keal Harry (2 catches, 15 yards) was on the receiving end of Newton's touchdown pass, while WR Gunner Olszewski (1 for 38) caught Stidham's.

Defensively, S Adrian Phillips led the unit with 12 total tackles, while CB J.C. Jackson secured his career-high seventh interception of the season. DE Chase Winovich also finished with a pick.

On special teams, Folk made his lone field goal attempt (32 yards) and all six of his extra point attempts. The Patriots' special teams also returned a punt for a touchdown (Olszewski, 70 yards) and a blocked field goal for a touchdown (S Devin McCourty, 44 yards).

Early storylines to watch, and what they mean for the Rams

Complementary football is a goal for the Rams every week, but between Newton and the Patriots run game, the Patriots defense and the Patriots special teams, coming through with such a performance is especially important this week.

Newton is spearheading a New England ground attack which currently ranks third in the NFL at 150.9 yards per game. While the Rams have been able to successfully limit the legs of dual-threat quarterbacks, the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Newton presents a different challenge physically compared to 5-10, 207 Kyler Murray and 5-11, 215 Russell Wilson. Repeatedly trying to tackle a quarterback of that size can wear a defense out if it does not limit him early.

An effective run game helps a team control the clock and limit opportunities for an opposing offense, which makes coming away with points on drives more critical for Los Angeles' offense when it has the ball.

By the same token, L.A.'s defense limiting that ground attack will help take pressure off its offense to produce points and play mistake-free. However, the fewer errors, the better for the Rams' offense, especially against an opportunistic Patriots secondary with Jackson, whose 7 interceptions rank second in the league, and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore.

On special teams, the Rams were able to overcome a pair of miscues against the Cardinals, but the margin of error will be much slimmer this week – the Patriots are coming off a performance in which special teams accounted for 14 of their 28 first-half points.

In short, it's on each phase to come through for the other to give the Rams the best chance to succeed on Thursday.

Opposing View: Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on the Rams' new and familiar faces

Roughly 22 months ago, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick faced the Rams in Super Bowl LIII. As is typically the case for many NFL teams, however, change year over year – whether it be personnel or the coaching staff – is inevitable.

The Rams have experienced turnover in both areas but still retain much of the same key personnel. Considering the changes both teams have undergone since then, though, that matchup understandably has little bearing on Thursday night's game at SoFi Stadium (5:20 p.m. PT, FOX/NFL Network/Amazon Prime Video) in the eyes of Belichick.

"There's certainly some familiar faces, but there's quite a few differences too," Belichick said on a conference call with Rams beat writers Monday afternoon. "Two new coordinators on defense and special teams. We didn't see (Rams wide receiver Cooper) Kupp. Defensively, there's certainly some new faces there too. But, corners (Jalen) Ramsey and Darious Williams and those guys are pretty good. Really, we're more focused on what we have now and not worry about too much about what happened a couple of years ago. It just really doesn't matter too much right now."

Indeed, Los Angeles' special teams are now overseen by John Bonamego rather than John Fassel, and its Wade Phillips-led defense two seasons ago is now helmed by Brandon Staley. Both Bonamego and Staley are doing different things schematically compared to their predecessors, according to Belichick.

"Coach Staley does a good job of disguising their defenses and changing things up," Belichick said. "It's kind of hard to know exactly what you're going to get, a lot of times you don't know until the ball is snapped. So, that'll be a challenge for us."

While Kupp, Williams and Ramsey are new Los Angeles players for New England to account for heading into Thursday's game, there are still several familiar ones, too, like quarterback Jared Goff, defensive lineman Aaron Donald and punter Johnny Hekker.

With Donald and Ramsey, Belichick said "you need to know where they are on every play" because "they can ruin a game and do ruin games."

Belichick has also seen growth in Goff, noting that Goff has been able to do all the things the Rams need him to do in the pocket, on play-action, on third-down and when dropping back as well.

"Played in and won a lot of big games, like the Tampa game," Belichick said. "I mean, he's got a good arm, has got good vision on the field. Obviously, a lot of good receivers and tight ends to throw to. He does a nice job of spreading the ball around and executing the offense. There's a lot of checks on the line of scrimmage. So, you can tell his overall awareness and decision-making, handling the offense, he's pretty comfortable doing that. So, he helps them in a lot of ways."

Of course, Los Angeles still has the same head coach in Sean McVay, whom Belichick said he "has a lot of respect for," as well as McVay's grandfather John.

"We both grew up in football families. But (I) will just keep the personal part of our relationship private," Belichick said. "Have a lot of respect for him. Talk to him. He's got some great insight and great ideas and I always enjoy talking to Sean."

We can get into Newton’s head, unlike we could with Brady. And... I think this defense can do it.

We contain running QB’s pretty good, and Newton doesn’t move as good as most in that category. He’s more straight ahead runner. Also... Get a turnover, he puts his head down...

So... Rams need to come out and dictate tone. Bellichick is great at that... McVay, can do it too, but BB is the chess master.

Newton can be a big plus, or pushed the other direction by early mistakes.

Set the tone!

Go Rams!

Not worried about Cam at all. They are so one dimentional with the run only.

I don't see any way we lose this game unless we have special teams breakdowns or Goff doesn't protect the ball. Or if we just don't show up to play physical and tackle.

Bill always had the cheat going on so you never know.

This is a huge game. The Rams can solidify their lead in the NFC West, and then sit back and relax for the next 10 days or so. And beating Belichick should be a real confidence-builder for this team. Please let this be a statement game. Yes, I am praying to the football Gods. Go Rams!

If Pats do go man, and try to take away Woods, Kupp, I hope we're ready for it, and it might mean big games for Reynolds/Jefferson and our TEs/RBs. I posted in the other thread that one thing the Pats might not be ready for is our RBs lined up wide, running WR routes. Line Hendo/Akers up in the backfield, motion them out wide, and let them go deep against a LB.

I think this defense is even better than the Super Bowl defense of a few years ago. Cam hardly throws anymore, so dare him to do so. Contain Cam in the pocket and the Rams win this game in blow out fashion. Sean McVay needs to do what he normally doesn't do, decide that winning by 3 points isn't good enough. Embarass this team and the Brady-less Patriots.

And run the damn ball.

I can see this going one of two ways - we win by 20 or we get fucking kerb stomped. I cant work out what I think is more likely.
