Rams Coast to 4-0 By Routing Giants

By William C. Rhoden, Special To the New York Times
Sept. 26, 1988

The reputation of the Giants' defense took a severe thrashing this afternoon.

Jim Everett threw for five touchdowns and Greg Bell ran for another while battering the Giants for 112 yards as the Rams won, 45-31, in front of 75,617 at Giants Stadium.

The loss was the second at home for the Giants, who also dropped a 20-17 decision to San Francisco two weeks ago. But unlike in that loss, which came on a last-gasp pass, the Giants this afternoon suffered a slow, brutalizing defeat that touched every area of the game.

In addition, the wide receiver Mark Ingram broke his collarbone in the third quarter, on a 32-yard pass play that set up a Giants touchdown. He is expected to be out for two to four weeks.

'Physically Beaten'
What left the deepest impression among most of the Giants was the Rams' relentless attacking style on offense and defense.

''This is the first time since I've been here that I can remember us getting physically beaten,'' said Phil Simms, the Giants' quarterback. ''We got beat everywhere. We did everything wrong, they did a lot of things right; they beat us to the punch.''

Simms should know. With his rookie right tackle, John Elliott, being terrorized by the Rams' active outside linebackers, Simms absorbed four bruising sacks. He was hit so hard from the blind side on the first one that he fumbled. Four plays later, the Rams scored their second touchdown.

Simms managed to throw for two touchdowns and complete 29 of 49 passes despite the pressure, but the pressure and the hits were so pronounced and frequent - even when they didn't lead to sacks - that Bell offered his sympathy after the game.

''All I can say is that he's got a lot of courage,'' said Bell.

'Weren't Scared'
Bell was pretty punishing in his own right. He not only became the third player to exceed 100 yards rushing against the Giants this season, but he attacked the tacklers and often carried them for extra yards.

''It was the mentality of the team,'' Bell said. ''We want to be a physical team; we weren't scared, we weren't intimidated. We knew they were stunting, but when they stunted, they were feeling something on the sides of their helmets.'

Coach Bill Parcells said simply: ''They beat us every way possible. This was the worst showing in a long time. I thought Pepper Johnson gave us hope with the touchdown interception, but we didn't make any big plays like that.''

Johnson, an inside linbebacker, picked off an Everett pass in the third quarter and ran 33 yards for the touchdown to cut the Rams' lead to 28-17 with 13 minutes 58 seconds left in the quarter.

But Everett hit Bell for a 2-yard touchdown, and after Joe Morris scored for the Giants, the Rams kicked a field goal and Everett hit Henry Ellard with a 41-yard touchdown to make it 45-24 in the fourth quarter. Simms hit Mark Bavaro with a 16-yard touchdown pass late in the game, but it didn't matter.

The Rams remain undefeated at 4-0, while the Giants slipped to 2-2. But the Giants are 2-0 in the National Football Conference East, which seems fitting for a team that has played with sporadic effectiveness.

They weren't effective today. The Giants were punished for every lapse, and the result was the Rams' 45-point outburst. It was the most points scored against the Giants since 1980, when San Diego routed them by 44-7. Everett's five touchdown passes were the most against the Giants since Danny White threw for five in 1983 at Giants Stadium.

''I don't know what happened,'' said Eric Dorsey, the Giants' defensive end. ''We had a good week of practice, we practiced hard. I think everybody was pretty sure that we'd win. They we came in here and made mistakes, breakdowns in coverage, containment. I really don't know what happened.''

The tone was set when Alvin Wright blocked Maury Buford's punt with 9:53 left in the first quarter. Shawn Miller recovered the football, and four plays later, Everett hit Pete Holohan for a touchdown.

What disturbed the Giants' coaches was that Wright really wasn't trying to block the punt. ''He was just the containment person,'' Buford said. ''He was just there to make sure there wasn't a fake.'' But when Gary Reasons headed downfield without so much as touching Wright, the Ram seized the opportunity.

Reasons explained that he left because he anticipated the punt. Buford said that he made a bad catch and took a stutter step that delayed the punt and threw off the timing.

Three more Ram touchdowns followed in the first half, and the Giants trailed by 28-3 at one point. They pulled to 28-10 on Ingram's first pro touchdown, a 9-yard pass play late in the first half.

''The sky's the limit for us,'' Bell said of the Rams' prospects. ''We're rolling, but not as much as we're going to be rolling.'' And the Giants? ''We'll just have to get back to work on Monday,'' said Bill Ard, the offensive guard. ''I thought we were prepared, I guess they were more prepared.”
