NFL Week 7 inside linebacker spotlight
BY MARK CHICHESTER

Run Stop Percentage
PFF’s “Run Stop Percentage” gives us a clear measure of a player’s effectiveness against the run on a per snap basis, that looks far beyond just the number of tackles made.

Run-Stop-Percentage-768x432.png

1. MARK BARRON, LOS ANGELES RAMS
PFF Grade: 83.7
Run Stop Percentage: 11.5 percent

In his first full season at the 3-4 inside linebacker position, the former safety-turned-linebacker is proving to be an integral part of Wade Phillips’ defense in 2017. Through seven games of the season, Barron has played a total of 165 snaps against the run and has produced 27 tackles and 19 stops. Barron moved to linebacker full-time in 2016, and he has produced 52 total run stops since, the fourth-most among off-ball linebackers in that span.

Pass-Rush Productivity
PFF’s pass-rush productivity measures pressure tallied on a per-snap basis with a weighting toward sacks produced. It gives us an indication of a player’s production in the pass-rush that goes beyond just sack-total and pressure rate.

Pass-Rush-Productivity-768x432.png

1. ALEC OGLETREE, LOS ANGELES RAMS
PFF Grade: 35.3
Pass-Rush Productivity: 28.2

So far this year, the fifth-year inside linebacker hasn’t graded particularly well, in large-part due to inconsistency while tackling (he’s missed eight tackles – third-most among linebackers). However, Ogletree has been incredibly productive in pass-rushing scenarios.

Through seven games, the Rams have sent Ogletree to rush the passer on 39 of his 250 passing snaps, and he’s produced two sacks, three hits and nine hurries – no inside linebacker has produced more pressure, or at a better rate.

The season started off rough for both of them and there have been some bad missed tackles by both but they seem to be settling in to their new roles. It goes to coaching too though, I think the first 3 or 4 games required Wade to adjust his play calling and defense to the players he had. He's using his players to their strengths now and the players are getting in sync with each other and it's paying off. Can't wait to see how this defense is playing come playoff time.

What is a run stop?

It says it goes beyond the number of tackles so I'm assuming run stops is what they are actually measuring?

Been happy with the play of both our ILBs more and more with each game post-Dallas. It's really good to see Barron settle in, as well as AO, and now it's just a matter of both those guys keeping it going and staying healthy.

What they did the other day to the Cards, though, was a great overall team effort too. Brock at 5T is for real. Those three DL are all playing very well, and have plenty of room to continue to get better on pressures. So I think it's going to be a sustained deal where our ILBs continue to play well because they have guys up front winning matchups.

What is a run stop?

To evaluate this we will be looking at one of our Signature Stats for defensive players, Run Stop Percentage. The percentage is simply calculated by taking the total number of stops and dividing it by the number of run snaps played. We define stops as any play that constitutes a ‘failure’ for the offense. For example, a 2-yard run on first down would be considered an offensive failure because it doesn’t really improve their position. A 1-yard run on 4th-and-inches that results in a first down, on the other hand, wouldn’t be considered a failure because the offense greatly improved their position.

You guys still scratching your head on the extension of Tree? Dude is a beast that breaks limbs and hearts all at the sane time! ( Ask the Tardinal fans if you need a reference)

Very happy with how both of these guys and more in particular Barrón has adjusted to this new role! Starting to see these guys feel more comfortable in Wades 3-4 scheme.

Exactly what I was thinking before I posted it. Watched ESPN's Sports Center last night. There was 90 seconds about the Rams/Cardinals game, mostly centered around the injury to Carson Palmer. There was a combined 20 minutes or so on the Patriots and the Cowboys. Until the Rams become a perennial winner, season after season, this disrespect will continue.

Not to mention 90% of the pregame talk was about AP.
Actually, 100% - how'd that work out for you boys?

As to the last part of your post - I am pretty much reconciled to the fact the Rams will never be thought of nationally like the Cowboys, Packers and Steelers, but if we sustain this, like you said, they will be respected.
I don't like the Patriots, (and I don't think most of the country does either), but I respect them.

Yes both of these 2012/2013 first round selections are figuring out their new positions. Rams now have 2 very good ILB'ers locked up until 2020 ....I have no issues with this do you? Does go against the norm from what we have seen from Wade in his long history where he has utilized 3rd day draft picks & UDFA's to man his inside posts.

I posted this last Saturday:

I can't say enough about how impressed I have been by these two coming into their own at the ILB spot.

Ogletree has learned a new scheme and he is moving defenders around on the Dline and then also turning his head and moving them around in the secondary. He has really taken it upon himself to be a leader.

Barron has been making a ton of tackles. Has also been excellent in coverage.

We have certainly seen our hiccups.

That secondary is starting to look pretty nice to isn't it?

Ok. Ok. I need to slow down. Need to rewatch the game. Then it's review film from the season thus far. Then we are done with it and I move on to watching the Giants.

Tree's tackling had been terrible the first 5 weeks IMO. He's really starting to play some good ball the last couple of weeks and the D is taking off. Barron is steady, I just hope he can hold up to the pounding inside. He's already not practicing. Littleton is very intriguing to me as well for depth. Just need to lock up Joyner and the D will be largely intact for a little while barring injury!

Somebody mentioned it after the first couple weeks. The policy is to always show the #1 rated player on the chart...

Unless that player is a Ram, then show the #2 player.

It's in the official guide book for being crappy, inconsistent, douchey journalists with an obvious bias.
