On “Good Morning Football” this week, Schrager was asked which quarterback in the NFC West he’d take for the next five years. His pick? Goff.

“I’m going with Jared Goff, which might be a surprise to some,” Schrager said. “But I look at the landscape around the NFL and I look at Russell Wilson and I say, OK, what’s he got around him as far as wide receivers? His offensive coordinator, is he a pass guy, Schottenheimer? Not necessarily. I look at the experiment down in Arizona. Until I see it, I don’t know what I’m getting. And then I look at the 49ers and [Jimmy] Garoppolo’s started 10 games in his career. I can’t go anywhere with him yet.”

Schrager’s right: There are questions across the division with each quarterback – Goff included. Wilson is clearly the more accomplished player than Goff, but he’s going to be in a run-heavy offense and he doesn’t have the weapons around him that Goff does. Kyle Murray is still an unknown as an NFL quarterback, while Garoppolo is inexperienced and is coming off a torn ACL.

It’s not bold to take Goff over Murray and Garoppolo, but it is to pick him over Wilson. But in Schrager’s mind, his supporting cast and coach (Sean McVay) make him the best choice in the division over the next five years.

“I’ll take the guy who I’ve seen do it on the field, do it in this offense. And no offense to Russell Wilson, if you want to ask me whose career I’d rather have, Russell Wilson 10 out of 10 right now. Russell Wilson is a Hall of Fame quarterback,” Schrager said. “But if you’re telling me for the next five years, knowing what Jared Goff has around him in three talented wide receivers and Todd Gurley and Sean McVay calling the plays, I will roll with Jared Goff over any of those quarterbacks in that division.”

I saw that clip. I noticed Schrager doesn't list any of Goff's attributes, it's all supporting cast and coach. Those are both good and valid reasons to pick someone, but Goff brings his own strengths to the field. And after Schrager said that, the other idiots started in with "you never know what you're going to get with Goff" and no one pointed out the simple fact that Goff has many more good games than bad ones the last two years.

It’s not always must watch TV but occasionally brings some informational depth. Schrager in particular has been high on Kupp Goff McVay and the ascent of the Rams. He sees a team that is not there yet but is building something very special and sustaining.

His boner for McVay really sells him on basically all things Rams. Which is fine by me, because I love hearing the praise.

I love Goff but I don’t know about taking him over Wilson. Wilson can extend plays and get you first downs with his feet, not Goff’s strong suit. He has also carried that team on his back during what was supposed to be a down year, something we haven’t seen Goff do.
It depends on how you are reading the question too, and the things he says about the west are true. The Cards experiment could fail spectacularly or at least take a while to get going and there’s really no reason to believe in Garapalo until he proves it. Carroll is one of the older coaches in the league and they depend on Russ to a fault.
So, who’s the best qb? I would say Russ, who’s in the best situation at this stage of their career? Goff.

Wilson still had the #1 rushing offense. That Seahawks team wasn’t that bad and they only went 10-6. So it’s not like they made it all the way to the NFC championship game. It’s amazing how people are talking about Wilson as this elite HOF QB after getting bounced out of the playoffs 4 years in a row. I’ll take Goff all day.

Being honest, I’d probably take RW myself - but if the question is which offense I would take, I’d take the Rams all day.

My first choice over every QB in the entire NFL is Mr. Goff.

I'll admit the eyeball test and some key QB statistics show there is a small short list of current quarterbacks better than Jared heading into the 2019 season.

My choice is based on personal perception and the belief of how much he's going to ascend over the next 2 seasons.

It's a weird question considering it's a team game.

Goff and Wilson are the only proven QBs in the division. I like the Rams team over the Hags. Goff keeps getting better I'll take him. Wilson has done a lot with poor offensive lines. They run block but, not pass block.

Blasphemy I know but:

What would the Rams offense be like with RW at QB?

The Rams offense is built on the running game, the threat of getting Wilson on the edge all alone or with one guy to beat would be very interesting.

LOL Geez it's not hard. There is only one other QB in the division proven to be worth the hype and that's Wilson. I only wonder how much longer Wilson can avoid the injury bug. You have to love his style of play, and his arm and accuracy. Wilson has the better arm and probably the better accuracy over Jared. But Jared has a lot less wear and tear on him and is in the perfect offensive system for him. He's only going to get better. He's still learning and growing as a QB.

Ultimately, I think Goff has the higher ceiling, especially in terms of career length. Pocket passers last longer which is why for years they were what everyone wanted. Goff has enough athleticism to gain a few yards for a 1st down on a scramble and especially to extend plays. That's really all you need in your QB. His arm is strong enough to make all the throws but more importantly to do it with accuracy.

So yeah over the next 5 years and IMO beyond you want Goff.

If I had to pick for the next 5yrs it would be tough between Goff and Wilson.

Wilson is better today, at least in some elements.

But, Goff feels like the better long play factoring age.

I’d probably pick Goff.

Wilson MIGHT be better today - but it's close, and he is likely at his peak. As he ages, he will lose a step, and probably has learned most of what he needs to know to succeed now.

Goff is still improving, learning more and more. I expect his flaws to improve season after season for a few more years. Wilson turned 24 his rookie season, while Goff turned 24 last season. He's still growing up and learning, but learning rapidly. Let's face it, after that disastrous first season with zero offensive guidance, did anybody really expect him to have pro bowl seasons the next two years? And they have been working all offseason to improve some of his flaws, and will likely do that each offseason for a number of years.

So if Wilson was better in 2018, that doesn't mean it's likely to be the case this season - much less the four seasons after this one.
