Seahawks give coach Pete Carroll an extension

The NFL’s oldest coach is going to be on the job a while longer.

Pete Carroll, the 67-year-old with endless energy, has done a fine job with the Seattle Seahawks this season. He was rewarded with an extension that will run through the 2021 season. If Carroll coaches for the entire contract, he’ll be on the sideline at age 70.

The Seahawks came into the season with a lot of doubters, having lost multiple superstars over the offseason. While this isn’t Carroll’s best team, it might be his best coaching job.

Pete Carroll has had a fantastic season
The Seahawks clinched a playoff spot with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. Less than 24 hours later, Carroll’s extension was done.

The Seahawks had a lot of turnover in the offseason, but the constants were Carroll and quarterback Russell Wilson. A great coach-quarterback duo can make a big difference in the NFL, and Seattle is going back to the playoffs after missing the postseason last year. Seattle is 9-6 with a game to go.

While Carroll probably won’t win NFL coach of the year, he deserves consideration. Despite losing players like Michael Bennett, Jimmy Graham, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Cliff Avril and Earl Thomas to free agency, difficult cuts or injuries, Seattle has just kept on winning.

Carroll is Seattle’s all-time leader in wins
Carroll will always be an icon in Seattle for bringing the Seahawks their first Super Bowl championship. That was part of a great stretch, when the Seahawks had an incredibly deep roster full of stars, with a few Hall-of-Fame-level talents.

88-54-1 record. He has led the Seahawks to the playoffs in seven of his nine seasons. He is firmly established as one of the best coaches in the NFL. This season was a new challenge for Carroll, but he mastered that too. Carroll is the all-time leader in wins among Seattle coaches, with a 88-54-1 record. He has led the Seahawks to the playoffs in seven of his nine seasons. He is firmly established as one of the best coaches in the NFL.

And he’s going to be around a while longer.

Doesn't matter their GM can't draft for shit. Only players they have I wanted was their LB"s but outside of them they can't draft for shit, especially in the last 2-3 years.

I mean, he's a good coach and they always have a winning record (plus a SB win), so it makes sense to keep him around for as long as he wants to coach. But in the end, he's still a whiny doucheface that I'd love to suplex one day.

That man earned that extension. He was left for dead with that team in Seattle, and here they come, giving people the business on their way to the playoffs.

Who cares..we are 2-0 against them, and will be 3-0 if we face them again. They are the flavor of the month, but theyll be drinking bleach in January

I hate the his antics on the sidelines. He chews gum like a cow. He gloat s and is very smug when things go his way and is in disbelief when they don't. However his whole motivational philosophy works with younger players. He is getting more out of a weak roster than most other coaches could. He runs a basic scheme and gets his players to buy in. I realize that his style wears thin with vets, but I have to give him credit. He's turned that team around in a hurry, with only a handful of stars.

I think this season might be the finest job he’s done.

A few of the (mostly former) loud mouth stars on defense have squawked about how Pete gives Wilson preferential treatment... and you would have thought the locker room is/was about to crash down.

But, here they are. Back in playoffs.

I liked Pete better WITH THE JETS. :sneaky:

As a Rams fan I hate the Seahawks and 69ers. I am not a fan of Carroll’s sideline antics during the game but I must admit he puts a good product on the field and his team is always a tough out. They are in transition and trending upward so I expect them to be even better next year. For this year I would prefer not to see them again in the playoffs.

Well, strictly based upon HC’s I would love to beat?

Asshole Face is now my #1. That smug expression after he’s done some chickenshit thing puts him at the top of my list.

Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick are in a tie for 2nd place with me.

But I do have to give them grudging admiration for their respective results.
