... The more excited I become.

I’ve recently seen new camp reports that re-triggered me on this subject.

Think about it...

A DL of AD, Suh, and Brockers.

A secondary of Peters, Talib, Joyner, and JJ. With NRC in the nickel and Shields in at dime.

A few questions at LB beyond Barron, but apparently not really big questions, according to reports.

All directed by the Mad Scientist Wade Phillips!

Hot Damn!

And assuming that the Rams will frequently be playing with a lead? Geez...

This D could become a truly dominating unit that leaves opposing O’s few choices other than to pick their poison. Might need to be R rated viewing. Lol.

I've been wondering what kind of strategies teams will use to counter that defensive line... Quick passes?

In that case, do we play considerable press? etc.

I'm with you @Rams43 ... trying hard to temper my excitement. This unit has potential to be one of the best ever.

That's just about their only choice. Look for teams (like the 49ers) to try and attack the edges with speed utilizing quick short passes. It's the only possible chink in our Ds armor. That's where our new rookie LBs will have to step up to help Barron, Littleton and Wilson out. That just might not be a chink after all.

Yea. When we had Long, Donald, Hayes and Quinn all together I remember thinking this.

And then we played the CBs 10 yards off the LOS.

I'm confident Wade went out and got these CBs so that won't have to happen.

Lots of screen passes and quick throws.
When the DBs go jam man coverage, take some deep shots.
Or just run right at the D. Power to power.
Also, attacking the LB in the passing game with TEs or creating mismatches with motion etc.

If John Franklin is a find, he will be the piece that propels this team to top defense in the league. Honestly, he's the one I'm excited about. I was pretty sure we'd be top 10 D but figured we needed one more piece at OLB or on the edge to put us over the top.

I know what to expect of Wade and it's going to be exciting seeing low profile players succeed under his scheme. What I am excited for the most is how he's teaching McVay how to gameplan on defense, I expect that it's still WIP but hopefully our HC will learn all of what Wade knows by the time he retires.

Assuming they sign AD they'll be elite on the DL and at CB. Since they're very good at safety I'd say the entire secondary is elite for that matter.

Which leaves the LB position:

ILB is probably going to be an "average" to "above average" group. Barron is a plus weakside interior guy, not elite like he would be as a WILL in a 4-3 but brings good drops and chase ability. But Littleton has a lot to prove and the depth chart has guys with some holes in their game

OLB is also probably going to be a similar range to ILB in overall production. They're not standout on paper by any means. I think they'll be improved on the contain, first off. But on the rush I don't think they'll be as good. Key here is Ebukam, because if he can seize that blindside rush job (i.e. just be solid there) then they can put Longacre on the strongside and all of a sudden they are above average because Longacre is a plus player on the left side.

So IMO there are two players who will significantly affect whether this defense takes that step towards the elite range: ILB Littleton and OLB Ebukam.

100% yes. Samson will come through, if the other edge is good enough, we will be elite.

There were the '85 Bears and the 2000 Ravens, and now there is the '18 Rams....

I'm tempered until Rams sign Donald, unfortunately.

Yeah, agree with this. The young LBs are fast....maybe not thumpers, but I am not sure we need thumpers in this D. Speed to the edges. Contain, contain, contain. Press the inside routes and let the bad ass young safeties take care of the rest. Let the offense keep scoring.

Quick short passes are going to leave a lot of 3rd and longs. Not where any O wants to be with this D. Give these guys a lead and they are even more scary.

Well thats a little scary considering that's what Jimmy G excells at is quick, short passes! Hopefully they don't have our number the way the Rams always seem to have the rest of their nfc west foes, even during the 7-9 B.S.!!
I just.feel that is going to be the focus now of the rest of our division is how to stop the Rams...
Here's hoping to it taking them a better part of a decade to figure it out!!

On paper right now , this defense looks better than that superbowl Denver D.
