No excuses for Marcus Mariota heading into make-or-break season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- This offseason has been about putting quarterback Marcus Mariota in position to succeed.

The Tennessee Titans exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie contract during the 2018 offseason, but Mariota still hasn't proved he can be a franchise cornerstone -- never finishing higher than 13th in Total QBR during his four seasons in the league -- and he's not under contract beyond 2019.

There have been plenty of excuses for Mariota's inability to firmly establish himself after being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, with injuries certainly a factor. Let's take a look at some of the reasons beyond Mariota's control for his up-and-down career so far -- and why he's better positioned heading into 2019.

Offensive systems

Mariota has not been able to play in the same offense between seasons once in his career. Going through five offensive coordinators in five seasons is hardly a recipe for success. Fortunately, new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith was promoted from tight ends coach to foster a sense of continuity for Mariota. The scheme and most of the terminology will be very similar to what former offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur installed last season. That's a bonus for Mariota, who was looking forward to the prospect of having the same coordinator before LaFleur became head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

"For what it's worth, it will be nice to get back into the building and be familiar with what's going on," Mariota said while cleaning out his locker in January. "Everybody will be able to go out there and get ready to play and not try to engulf a new system."

There will be some newness to Smith's scheme, but the core concepts will be the same. Smith has been with the Titans since before Mariota joined the team. He knows Mariota's strengths and areas that need improvement as well as any coach. Smith also has a firm understanding of the personnel on Tennessee's roster. Now his job is to find ways to showcase Mariota and a talented group of players on offense.

Playmakers

A lack of weapons has hampered Mariota since he arrived in Nashville. Tight end Delanie Walker has been Mariota's favorite target and most consistent pass-catcher over the past three years, averaging 77.7 receptions and 898.3 yards per season. Walker figures to regain a key role once he returns from the broken ankle he suffered last season. In Walker's absence in 2018, wideout Corey Davis established himself as Mariota's go-to receiver. Davis was on pace for his first 1,000-yard season before the offense shifted behind Derrick Henry, who exploded for 625 yards and eight touchdowns in December. Maintaining a strong running game should open up more passing lanes for Mariota.

The big addition in free agency was Adam Humphries, a consistent pass-catcher who hauled in 72.4 percent of the targets that went his way in 2018. Despite being only 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, Humphries has no fear when it comes to working the middle of the field and taking big hits from linebackers. Humphries will play an integral role as a slot receiver, especially on third down.

The team's selection of 6-foot-1 wideout A.J. Brown in the second round (51st overall) gives Mariota a big target with a huge catch radius. Brown made a living in the slot last season (85 receptions, 1,320 yards, six TDs), but he also showed that he could play on the outside in 2017 (75 receptions, 1,252 yards, 11 TDs). His ability to gain yards after the catch will be imperative for the Titans' offense. Getting the ball to Brown on various in-breaking routes and screen passes will give him a chance to showcase his playmaking ability.

O-line issues

The interior part of the offensive line struggled mightily last season, as Mariota was sacked a career-high 42 times. Guards Josh Kline and Quinton Spain were replaced with high-priced free agent Rodger Saffold (four years, $44 million) and third-round selection Nate Davis. Saffold should be a huge upgrade, especially when taking the field next to left tackle Taylor Lewan. Saffold was third among all guards in ESPN's Pass Block Win Rate powered by NFL Next Gen Stats last season (minimum 300 blocks), holding his blocks for at least 2.5 seconds 87.4 percent of the time. With Spain moving on to the Bills, the Titans now have a more natural fit for their zone scheme in Davis, who should develop into a starter at some point in 2019.

The defense

Tennessee's defense hasn't been a problem -- it's been a strength. For the most part, that unit remains intact in 2019, which is the cherry on top for Mariota. Dean Pees' squad finished last season with the NFL's third-best scoring defense, allowing only 18.9 points per game. Mariota shouldn't find himself in many shootouts next season. Coach Mike Vrabel's formula for wins is relying on a stingy defense and a physical running game.

Well, lottsa luck....Arthur Smith has never been an Offensive Coordinator at the collegiate or NFL Level and when it comes to Marcus Mariota the only thing you have been able to rely on with Marucs Mariota is his unreliability.

Injuries have hurt him combined with inconsistency, the Tennessee Titans under Head Coach Mike Vrabel will IMO, play solid defense and special teams, but the offense will always be a work in progress. New Left Guard Rodger Saffold should aid the running game and I like Derrick Henry and the running game will drive the offense as they have a ton resources invested in the offensive line, plus one thing that Mariota can do is run and keep plays alive with his legs, but his accuracy is always in question and he can go several series of missing receivers.

Overall there is depth behind Mariota in Ryan Tannehill & Logan Woodside, but the AFC South is one of the better divisions with the rise of the Indianapolis Colts the Houston Texans & the on again off again Jacksonville Jaguars, so are the Titans the worst team in the division? It could be, but then again, they could be a 10-6 team and make the playoffs and last year gave a blueprint on how to beat the New England Patriots.

Part offense part just an unspectacular QB. I have a hard time seeing him after four years being anything above an average QB.

I concur and would not be shocked if Mariota suffers another injury, that Ryan Tannehill takes over and if the Titans start winning, Mariota never gets his starting gig back.

I thought he would be an exciting quarterback coming into the league. It just hasn't materialized so far. His first two years weren't bad. His last two years though, more turnovers than TD's. I have a feeling he's gonna have to do a lot better this season or his time might be thinking about moving on.

IMO Mariota would have been a top 8 - 12 quarterback if he had better players around him and consistent coaching. If Tennessee gives up on him, he could become someone’s Nick Foles in a couple of years.

Love now everybody a few years ago was on Winston’s and his nuts and downing Goff and now it’s the opposite. Even the Goff crybabies here have died down.

Marriota I feel would be a good QB with coaching consistency but he has to stay healthy. Not saying he’s top talent but no reason he couldn’t become top 10.

Reminds me of Fisher promoting Cignetti and Boras from within because nobody else would touch the job.

The man was hurt last season. I hate it when the criticism police just ignore that fact.

I swear, the more and more I see criticism, the more and more I'm inclined to support the players.

I'd love to see Mariota struggle next year, get dumped by the Titans, and brought in cheap to backup Goff. Get him in a good system with some talent, let him learn for awhile, and he could end up pretty good. Teams will also have to respect his running ability.

Mariota is always going to be limited as a passer. This is why I was so irritated when Goff's QB class was in the draft and all the pundits were acting like they couldn't measure up to the amazing duo that went the prior year (Mariota & Winston). What we've seen since, all the media criticism on Goff even in the face of his production, and the ignoring of the struggles of those other two, have been sort of an extension of all that. Media types wanting to be right for their initial takes plain and simple.

Winston, now, is a talented passer and he just won the QB lottery with a hiring of a coach who will maximize him in the scheme. But his issues are always going to be there, and he remains a guy who it's questionable to build around and make the face of your franchise.

IMO Winston is always going to be average no matter what.

funny when all the talking heads said the titans absolutely surgeoned the rams in the goff trade. the rams mortgaged their future on a qb who wasn't even worth the number 1 pick and the titans set themselves up for years of playoff runs, with a better qb. haha, talking heads are fucking stupid.

mariota sucks, they just declined conklin's 5th year option and corey davis isn't setting the world on fire. meanwhile goff is the franchise qb the rams have been searching for, cooper kupp is one of the best wrs in the league and the rams are set up for years of playoff runs.

disclaimer - yes i understand it would be all different if fisher was still the coach. but the talking heads even laughed at the rams for hiring such a young coach to replace him.

I agree. It's pretty tough for a QB to rise above poor interior line play and a lack of receiving talent. Saffold is a huge improvement at LG and the addition of Adam Humphries & AJ Brown gives Mariota some new toys to play with. The Titans already have a quality RB, and their good defense looks to have improved, they had an excellent free agency & draft, so barring injury, I expect to see them fighting for a potential play-off slot. Mariota should see a far reduced number of QB pressures and sacks, the real wildcard may be whether their coach is up to the job. jmo.

It's a fact that the Rams won this trade. And a fact that they won the Griffin trade. The two largest trades in Rams history, and two of the biggest in the last several years and Snead came out on top.

I can assure you that if the Titans had the chance to go back in time and select Goff and cut or trade Mariota versus getting those draft picks they would do it in a heartbeat.

If I was their GM I would do it.
