The salary cap is once again going up.

The NFL announced Tuesday that projections for the 2019 salary cap are in the range of $187 million to $191.1 million -- a decent increase over the 2018 cap of $177.2 million per club.

There has been a 40 percent increase in the salary cap since the 2014 season ($133 million) and it would be the sixth consecutive year the cap is projected to climb more than $10 million per club year over year.

According to the league, total projected player costs, including benefits, are projected at more than $7.3 billion in 2019.

The final salary-cap figure will be revealed in the months ahead before free agency officially begins on March 13.

That's interesting as hell.. 10-14 extra... will help out with that dumb ass story line that " we're all in this year, we got to release everybody next year.."

We should be able to save some coin with Joyner, Suh, and Barron more than likely leaving.

All that mass hysteria about not being able to keep all our talent long-term is looking pretty silly right about now...

I know we shouldn't be looking ahead to next year while in the thick of this year - but lets commit to Saffold and Fowler with the extra cap money. In FA - lets get a solid FS and a stud ILB.

That talk was looking silly when it started. Anybody that has even a slight understanding of the cap and the Rams contracts saw all that in it for this year only talk was just bullshit to make the Rams look bad. Demoff is not and will not mortgage the Rams future to build a 1 year wonder.

With this projection, the Rams are expected to have between $37.2 million and up to $41.3 million to spend in 2019. That would rank them just below the league average of around $42 million, putting them 17th in the NFL, according to Spotrac.

The biggest cap numbers for the Rams next season are Aaron Donald ($17.1 million), Andrew Whitworth ($15.9 million) and Brandin Cooks ($15.3 million). Those three players alone will make up around 25 percent of the Rams’ salary cap space.

As for players who could be cap casualties, Mark Barron ranks high on the list. He’s on the books for $9.7 million in 2019, which is a hefty price to pay for a below-average linebacker. The Rams can release him next year and take on only $2 million in dead money, saving themselves more than $7 million.

Aqib Talib, depending on how he plays, is another name worth watching. He has a cap hit of $8 million in 2019 – the final year of his contract – and can be released for no penalty at all. As long as he performs at a high level the rest of the way, though, he should be safe.

Player set to hit free agency in 2019 include Ndamukong Suh, Lamarcus Joyner, Dante Fowler Jr. and Rodger Saffold, among others.

As previous poster mentioned, cut Barron, sign Saffold and Fowler, and let Suh and Joyner walk. Maybe move Talib to FS and draft best CB avail?? Heard there might be some names around our late pick.. not sure tho, haven’t started my research yet.

My 2 cents...

I have thought about the ability to move Talib to FS, but he is playing so well at CB, right now, I leave him there, with the option to move him later when we have to.

True, but we only have him for one more year. Not to mention, it’s a steep price. In an article before the season by Gary (last name slips my mind), Talib mentioned how he chose us over 9ers bc Lynch spoke with him and wanted to restructure his contract; Talib ain’t takin’ no pay cut! So we either stretch that over some time or convert some to a bonus.. I’m not sure but something will have to give..

Love what you guys are getting at. I’d think we might have to better chances of keeping Talib at CB and drafting a high end FS to nail both on the head. In the next 1-4 years Talib drops off a bit we can relagate him to S as well.

Or better yet grab a reliable FS in the FA market and then draft a top CB. BPA obviously will be best way with certain position tendencies. :)

Excited to see how things are shaping up for the off season!!! I’m projecting a NFC Chamionship gane appearance at the worst. So what is that 28 at best?

Joyner’s play has started to improve over the last couple games and the reason why is he’s spending more time in the box like he did with fisher and John Johnson has been playing that single high safety. I don’t know what took Wade so long to do that but it’s clear Joyner plays much better covering the slot and playing in the box

It was funny to hear Collinsworth explaining that Wade just figured out how to use Peters to his best ability. Most of the forum knew Peters was more of a zone corner. I don't think it took Wade this long to figure it out. He just had no one else to put on the top receivers with Talib out.

And yeah, Joyner looks better at SS, and John Johnson at FS. They started like that. I don't know why the change.

That is just Collinsworth being lazy in his preparation.

Talib greatly increased his value to the Rams by not playing and watching the rest of the D backfield play like sh**.
Haha.

Maybe a better Candidate to move to FS could be Peters since he is better playing off than playing press man.

No way the Rams should consider cutting Talib, he is a real leader and still one of the Rams best defensive players.

Note losing the young CB Peterson in preseason sucked. I think he might have really shown in Talib's absence. I sort of had high hopes for him coming into this offseason. Thought he played well down the stretch last year for a young CB, especially an undrafted rookie FA.

Agree that the Rams may not bring back Joyner or Suh and Barron is one the most likely of any Ram to be a cap cut. I always liked Barron in Williams system but he just does not fit as 3-4 ILB.

Yes we did see JJ III playing more high safety & yes we did see Joyner playing closer to the LOS against the Bears. I sure hope we will see more of this for the rest of the season. LJ had 7 solo's tacks & by far LJ's best game of the yr. JJ III tackles was down considerably due to seeing more snaps @ high safety but he had 1 of his 4 INT's with a 35 yd return. LJ has only 1 INT thus far playing high safety.

If Joyner can play as well as he did against the Bears for the remainder of the season, I think you have to entertain keeping him - at a lower price hopefully given his poor play for the majority of the year - and just really utilizing him appropriately going forward. He's proven to be quite capbale near the line of scrimmage.

I see no evidence from Snead that he will consider LJ. That ship has sailed back in February. Snead will draft a future high safety in this upcoming draft along with several corners. However if the 30 yr old UFA Earl Thomas wants to get some retribution from Seattle.... LA would be the team would put him in a position to get the most of it. Thomas set his eyes on a Ram secondary with two veteran ex all pro's Talib, Peters, Nickel NRC & SS JJ III he would be a dandy fit as our high safety!:fuelfire:

This is why I dont mind paying big money for our young superstars. Cap will continue to go up and the rams have secured alot of young talent
