NFL confirms suspension of side judge Rob Vernatchi

During Monday night’s game between the Steelers and Chargers, the game clock erroneously ran for 18 seconds after a touchback in the fourth quarter and went unnoticed by the officiating crew working the game.

PFT reported on Wednesday that side judge Rob Vernatchi, who was charged with supervising the timing of the game, would be suspended for this week as a result of his failure to supervise the timing of the game. The NFL confirmed that on Thursday and also addressed the rest of the officiating crew and the clock operator at Qualcomm Stadium in a statement.

“Side judge Rob Vernatchi will not officiate in Week 6 as a result of the failure to notice that the game clock was incorrectly started late in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Steeler and San Diego Chargers. The mistake will also impact the evaluation of the other six members of the officiating crew, led by Pete Morelli. The official game time is kept on the stadium scoreboard, but it is the responsibility of the side judge to supervise the timing of the game. Had the side judge or any of the other six on-field officials noticed the timing error, they could have corrected it. The status of the clock operator in San Diego, who is an NFL employee, is under review. The Chargers’ next home game is in Week 7 on Sunday, October 25.”

While the statement doesn’t use the term “suspension,” it’s obvious that Vernatchi has been suspended; he won’t be working this week as a direct result of the clock error.

PFT also reported Wednesday that back judge Greg Wilson would be reassigned from Sunday night’s Patriots-Colts game to the matchup between the Titans and Dolphins after failing to penalize Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright for an illegal bat of the ball during the Week Four game between the Seahawks and Lions. The NFL has not commented on that situation.

How about we hold officials accountable for real bad calls? I never see Tripleshit or Vinodouche or Booger getting suspended when they repeatedly botch calls.

This. I don't get it. I am happy we are finally seeing some accountability and all.... but it just seems like an odd place to start. And since they doubtlessly will not continue with this trend of holding refs/side judges accountable, I'd feel like I got jipped if I was Vernatachi.

He's basically the fall guy, the thing to make most fans be like, "Haha, now the refs know they're going to be held accountable, things are going to change." Then nothing will change, but now when people point it out they'll be like, but that ref that let 18 seconds run off the clock was suspended while ignoring the fact that QBs of the lesser cared about teams are getting speared and shit like you mentioned and all the egregious shit that's been happening in the NFL for the last few years continues and will continue until somebody gives a shit to stop it.

Like when they destroyed Payton, Williams and the Saints to deflect heat from them basically brushing Spygate under the rug. The casual fan will eat it up and think that things have gotten changed when really they haven't done a damn thing and they get to walk off patting their back like they've done something.

Fall guy?

Let's not over analyze this, that dip was perfectly positioned with hands on knees to make a basic simple call... Quack

Quack

He failed

Fall guy?

I don't understand

Then again, lol, I'm referring to the ref that allowed that illegal bat out of bounds

My bad?

All you did was misread the post. My post was referring to the suspended ref for letting clock run off, not the ref who fucked up in Seattle.

How about all the line judges who missed The Mighty Quinn getting choke-held every single freaking game last season and this season? How about letting TJ Mac tackle them by their third leg?

Sure, lose track of 18 seconds and you get suspended. Miss a guy collapsing a QB's sternum... no biggie.

I guess they're starting here because this is a technical DNA rifle-up, with big hits etc, i guess you have subjective/objective viewpoints.

Apparently the penalty for blowing a call in a nationally televised game is having to officiate the Titans and Dolphins game or some other lousy team's games.

It is time to make these officials full time employees and not work it as a part time job/hobby. I think every team should be allowed one challenge play every game regardless if it is a "reviewable" play or not.

NFL officials make on average $173,000 per year.

I know, but most still have other full time jobs they do the rest of the week. Not bad change for working 20 or so weekends a year!

Right but what I'm saying is 173,000 is more than enough to live off of if they have other jobs it's by choice and not the nfls fault
