NFL considering eliminating Pro Bowl game: reports

In an attempt to revamp the Pro Bowl celebrations, the NFL is considering eliminating the annual All-Star game entirely due to the lack of competition in recent years, according to reports.

During the NFL’s spring meeting in Atlanta this week, team owners discuss the possibility of eliminating the Pro Bowl game played at the end of the week, creating an alternative event instead, the NFL Network reported Tuesday.

Washington Post reporter Mark Maske suggested a "seven-on-seven" competition with no tackling was under consideration, but no decision has been made.

The Pro Bowl has grown increasingly less intense over the years with players opting out altogether to avoid unnecessary injuries.

Commissioner Roger Goodell has frequently acknowledged that while it's important to honor the players who have earned Pro Bowl recognition, there are questions about the quality of the game. So the league will have further discussions with the players and their union, as well as with NFL partners, on the future of the all-star contest played the weekend before the Super Bowl.

Take it back to Hawaii and let them play dodge ball on the beach. That "football game" is worthless!

7-on-7? So OL and DL pro bowlers just no longer exist??

I'm fine with an alternative just make it a reasonable alternative.

Is it all about the money? Is that why they don't play and risk injury?

Then, how about a pooled NFL fund for compensation to any player injured in the game, based on the severity of the injury?

Cancelling the NFL's Pro Bowl game wouldn't bother me at all.

To be honest, the last time I watched a Pro Bowl game from start to finish was at least 20 years ago.

For those of you that still appreciate the contest and want it to continue on, I will understand your preferences.

So..hypothetically speaking..if a players contract has an incentive clause that pays him X amount of money if he makes the Pro Bowl, but the NFL eliminates the Pro Bowl....what happens then?

From the article posted
"creating an alternative event instead"

Also there's All Pro voting and many other ways to get incentives into the contracts.

I thought it was cool seeing all the different helmets on the field at the same time when I was a kid. Now they're lucky if I tune in to watch a whole drive. Heck, do they even have drives anymore? Seems like they just chuck the ball down the field for a TD while the defense just stands there.

I'd turn it into a week of poker and move it back to Hawaii. Have all the Pro Bowlers get an auto-buy-in for a nice dollar prize and then make them do all kinds of ops shit with fans throughout the week along with table eliminations every day or two. Fans would go to it, players would enjoy it without risking injury.

Also rank the players out by age. The old fuckers are on the later tables. The young kids have to survive the early tables to play the old dudes. Gives them a nod for their seniority and weak bladders. :laugh2:

A good idea indeed. The game has lost any of my interest since all it does is put players at risk for injury and is seldom competitive.

I used to go to all the Pro Bowl games back in the 808 in the 70's. Usually for free. There were different rules designed to make the game interesting even back then when it was treated like an All-Star game. It wasn't a real football game though... and now with the earning potential and longevity of your playing career being the only focus... none of the players give a shit about free airfare and lodging in Honolulu. There is absolutely no real value in it anymore.

Football is too violent a sport to play for pride of your conference today. It's meaningless for the players. Give them the honor of being selected as Pro-Bowl players... but don't subject them to risking the rest of their playing career for it.

I'd like to see a skills challenge instead of the pro bowl. Kickers hitting 70 yard field goals. WRs catching the ball one handed, QB's throwing at targets, etc.

Better than seeing a half hearted effort of a real game.

Yeah, I'm all about the skills challenges. Anyone remember battle of the network stars? Kinda like that but with NFL pro bowlers...
