Morning Ram-blings: Checking big boards

With free agency in full swing and so much going on, I didn't get a chance to offer a quick look at the updated draft prospect rankings from Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay last week. Let's take care of that now.

Both Kiper and McShay have mostly stuck to their boards with only small tweaks here and there. The complete rankings are available on ESPN Insider but a peek at the top five continues to show that the quarterback class this season just doesn't have the appeal of recent classes.

In Kiper's updated rankings Insider, he has South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, Auburn tackle Greg Robinson, Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack, Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins and Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews as the top five.

Believe it or not, Kiper and McShay agree.

In McShay's updated rankings Insider, he has a familiar five with Clowney, Robinson, Mack, Watkins and Matthews at the top and no quarterback until Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater at No. 8.

There's a long way to go between now and the draft but it's fair to wonder if the lack of love for quarterbacks will make it difficult for the Rams to trade down if that's the way they choose to go. However, maybe one of the above players can draw a lot of attention as Clowney is expected to. Whether the Rams stay at No. 2 or move down, they probably can't go wrong if they can find a way to land one of those top five players, especially one of the tackles or Watkins.
