This play by Sony is still impressing the shyte out of me. BUT, I am also blown away by Stafford not flinching when this Tampa dude launched himself directly for him. Stafford didn't move or even acknowledge that #43 was bearing down hard on him, before Superman took him out.
Do you you think Matthew trusts Sony that much or that he was lost in the play and didn't "see" him?

Three things...

--Kinda hard to tell from that angle really how close the defender was. Wish I could see from a different angle.
--Maybe Stafford thought he could get that throw off in time-- even without Michel's help?
--NFL QB's do this all the damn time. It's freaking insane, I don't know how they do it. (Warner was certainly great at it.) How the heck do ya consistently get off a great throw when a defender is quite literally breathing down your neck?

Stafford sees the defender and is moving slightly to his left as he gets the throw off.

Still one of my favorite pick ups in a while by Sony. You can see him s an the little e see the blitz coming and sell out to get there.

Dude is a great addition.

I think Stafford gets the throw off in time and probably doesn't get much contact...
And I still LOVE the block and effort by Michel and you know that got big cheers in the film room and endeared him to his teammates even more.

I agree wholeheartedly. I wasn't that excited when Les picked him up, but he sure looks the part. Great blocker, strong runner, and he can catch out of the backfield. Watch him have the best year of his career, and then he will want to spend the next four years with the Rams. Thanks Bellicheat (and fuck you -lol)!

Michel earned an awful lot of respect with that pick up.

I remember someone here, when the trade was announced, spoke to his prowess in picking up blitzes/free rushers.

whoever that was, 1st round is on me Nostradamus….:clinkingbeer:

I've been super happy with his blocking. Way more than I had anticipated. He's had a few like this already.

I wish someone would put up the vid of the block he made on the rusher up the gut. Stills just don't do it justice.

I saw Michel's ability to pass protect while he was in NE. His vision is what makes him a good RB. It also serves him well in pass protection. It's why I've been saying Sony is a true #1 RB who is good at all phases of the position. He runs with power, he's a solid receiver and he can pass protect with the best of RBs. His performance against the Bucs was quietly impressive. He ran well against a D-front most people consider a top unit. He showed exactly how powerful he can be. He definitely is the Ram's short-yardage and 3rd down RB. Oh yeah like everyone else I was yelling and rolling with laughter when he flipped that Buc on his head!

It is why I've been saying that trading for Sony is on the same level as the trade for Corbett, and Young and the signings of Floyd and Hollins. People tended to overlook these players when they were originally signed. But now they have proven themselves key players on this roster. I'm contending that Michel's trade to the Rams is on that same level. Despite Belicheat's viewpoint that he was expendable, Michel is a true #1 RB because he's very good in all phases of the position. He simply doesn't have blazing breakaway speed, but he isn't slow by any measure. Sony is the kind of grinder that will get the tough yards, that every good team needs. McVay has the flash with Akers, Henderson, and Funk who I think McVay sees another future Michel type of RB who has that blazing speed.

Personally, I question to what degree Akers can fully recover from an Achilles injury. History has shown that it shortens the careers of most RBs as it degrades their performance. I would be far more confident if it was an injury like an ACL as players can actually return to be as good or better.

That said I think the Rams have a very good trio of RBs in Michel, Henderson, and Funk. Getting Funk IMO was an absolute steal in the 7th round. I think he has a much higher ceiling than most judged him as having. I think he can become a faster version of Michel. Pass protection is a skill most RBs lack. It is a learned skill set that most RBs only get in the NFL. It all starts with good field vision which Funk seems to have. If he can develop it on par with Michel's, Jake has all the other traits to become a complete RB. Jake needs to gain strength which will serve him well as a power RB and in pass protection. The bottom line is as long as the Rams have Michel and Funk there RB situation is set for the long term.

I really like the RBs that the Rams have and honestly think Michel will earn that #1 RB position this year and will hold it going into 2022.

It should be, that was one hellacious play. That is championship effort.

That being said, with the way we have been stretching the field
Our backs should be getting some good looks in the run game.
As long as we continue killing with explosive plays those run lanes are
gonna get bigger and bigger.

Hopefully it helps make the loss of our Stud RB a little easier to take.

Guess that's one of the many reasons why there are so many to bust out of college.
Takes a special kind of man.
I see similarities between Kurt and Staff.

I remember watching Kurt play and if he got to his drop without major pressure
I knew it would be complete 95% of the time even before he threw it .
He was just that automatic.

I'm starting to get similar feelings of confidence about Matt. I know it's too early
for a statement like that, but Damn if it ain't leaning that way so far.
