Rams roster preview: OL Jamil Demby trying to cement sixth-man role

Being cross-trained under OL Coach Aaron Kromer can only result in positives. Demby has the potential to play a key role in the OL room.

A 2018 NFL Draft sixth-round pick who spent time with both the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions, OL Jamil Demby had quite the experience as a rookie in the NFL last year.

After being waived in September, the Rams had the intention to stash Demby on the practice squad in an attempt to have the offensive lineman develop under star Offensive Line Coach/Run Game Coordinator/Co-Offensive Coordinator Aaron Kromer. The Lions had other plans as they claimed Demby on waivers with him spending time on the Lions’ practice squad. Eventually, the Rams re-signed Demby, bringing him back safe and sound.

Demby got to experience the highs and lows of the NFL in a whirlwind of a rookie season from spending time with a rookie head coach and struggling team in Detroit to one of the best teams in the NFL and a Super Bowl contender in the Rams.

Roster Battle
The starting five offensive lineman are nearly set in stone as LT Andrew Whitworth, LG Joseph Noteboom, C Brian Allen, RG Austin Blythe, and RT Rob Havenstein. The backups that are likely to earn roster spots are 2019 NFL Draft third-round pick Bobby Evans, fifth-round pick David Edwards and Demby. Demby has the potential to be the sixth-man and first lineman off the bench as the swing tackle given that he’s practiced as the starting left tackle with Whitworth out during organized team activities.

Expectations
Demby isn’t likely to start barring any injury issues. If any of the starting five OL go down by way of an injury/suspension, Demby is likely the first man off the bench to get a crack at a starting spot. The potential for Demby to start if either Noteboom or Allen struggle is there too. Left guard is obviously the more natural position for Demby to replace, though Blythe does offer center experience meaning Demby could slide in at right guard if needed with Blythe taking over at center.

Chances of making the final roster (8/10)
Demby has the potential to play an important role in the offensive lineman room. The swing tackle is an important spot as they can get minor playing time in jumbo packages while also being the first player to be relied upon in the event of an injury.

Chances of Making The Final Roster (8/10)

I think the odds for Edwards making the final roster are higher than 8/10. Barring a season-ending injury, I expect him to easily make it. They aren't going to waive him and hope they can somehow keep him. He fell in the draft because of the injury, but without that, he would have gone a lot higher and is healthy now.
