Los Angeles Rams Potential Surprise Cuts Heading Into Training Camp

This is the doldrums period of the NFL off-season. Yes, there was a massive Julio Jones trade but by and large, this is the time of the year where everything else is quiet except behind the scenes. Training camps open up in a little over a month, and spoiler alert, not everyone makes it to camp. Rosters need to be pruned to 53 people and given where most teams are in relation to the salary cap, that always leads to surprise cuts.

For the Rams, this holds especially true as they have a little over $7 million (ish) dollars to work with but they too could make a few surprise cuts to give themselves more roster flexibility. Some of these will be painful but unfortunately, the NFL is a brutal business.

Let’s take a look at five potential surprise cuts.

Rob Havenstein – Offensive Tackle

It’s weird how quickly things change in this league. Back in 2018, Havenstein was given a four-year extension and anointed as the Andrew Whitworth in waiting, and after a tough 2019 which ended in injury, that extension isn’t looking as savvy as it did five years ago. His 2020 campaign was a nice bounce-back type of season but that didn’t stop the Rams from putting him on the trade block. Due to the glut of tackles available in free agency and the draft, there weren’t any takers and Havenstein is the incumbent starter at right tackle again.

That might not be true at the start of the season as the Rams could save around $6 million (ish) if they cut him and they have enough depth on their offensive line to be cool with parting with him. It’s a bummer because he’s an underrated Les Snead second-round find, but such is life.

Greg Gaines – Defensive Line

This one would be a bit shocking considering the team already moved on from Michael Brockers but Gaines could be a surprise cut if he can’t take a leap. He’s had limited play in his two seasons with the team and given that he’s a fourth-round pick he’s on a very team-friendly contract, but if a more proven defensive lineman becomes available the Rams could cut Gaines to free up the roster spot. Gaines is likely to remain on the roster as a key depth guy behind A’Shawn Robinson or Sebastian Joeseph-Day, but there isn’t evidence the Rams are set on keeping him and next year he’s in a contract year so the Rams could decide to move on early.

Obo Okoronkwo – Outside Linebacker/Edge

Another surprising cut could come at linebacker where Okoronkwo could be someone that like Gaines needs to make a leap lest they lose their spot to a free-agent veteran. His athleticism has always made him appealing but he’s also been hurt a lot and that could make him a surprise cut come the summer. He has the chance to crack the starting lineup given the only guaranteed starter is Leonard Floyd, but he needs to make a leap.

Micah Kiser – Inside Linebacker

Now here is where a real surprise cut could occur. Micah Kiser was a starter last season but had missed a lot of time due to injury, and aside from Floyd, he’s the most likely starter in the hodgepodge of linebackers. So, why would the Rams cut him? Well, there’s a chance the Rams are in a position to take another pass-rusher and that roster spot would have to come from somewhere and Kiser isn’t so entrenched as a starter that he’s untouchable. It isn’t likely he’s the first linebacker out but the right player could come along and take his job. He’s someone that could be cut down the road as well or allowed to leave in free agency eventually.

Johnny Hekker – Punter

Of all the surprise cuts this one would obviously crush fans the most. Hekker is the highest-paid punter in the league and while he’s done more than enough to earn it, he did struggle mightily in 2020, and so did the rest of the Rams’ special teams. The Rams have their third special teams coach in as many years and they drafted with an eye for future talent and present-day special teams body.

They also brought in a new punter and it is WEIRD to have two punters on the roster. Hekker even sees possible writing on the wall and knows he can’t struggle again because if the Rams need cap space the punter is rarely the untouchable figure on the roster. Hekker is a fan favorite and it would be a mistake to get rid of him because when he’s right he’s a major weapon for the Rams, because not only does he set the defense up for success with great field position, but he can do gadget plays on special teams.

He’s a special talent but on the hierarchy of NFL roster spots the punter is a pin monkey, and as Homer would learn, even the best pin monkey can’t be kept if the money isn’t there.

Surprise cuts are a normal part of the NFL season and the Rams have a lot of places where they can trim the roster so be prepared to get misty as fan favorites might be gone.

Havs? No way. RTs don’t grow on trees and he’s proven. Compare his contract to other legit starting RTs. If the Rams couldn’t trade him, why would they cut him and get nothing back?

Gaines? Traded, maybe, but doubtful he would get cut. This IS the year for him to step up. He’s improved each year so I would expect the Rams to count on just that.

Obo? Most likely possibility of the bunch. If this guy can’t get through camp in one piece...what would be the point of keeping him around? The Rams now have Lewis in that “possible star, if we can get him off of the trainer’s table” role.

Kiser? Not seeing it. Last year was supposed to be his year. He gets another chance.

Hekker. Hmm. I would be sad, but not entirely shocked. I have faith, though. Bringing in a new punter should do the trick. When Hekker is on, there’s nobody better. Never has been.

I don't remember anybody saying that Havenstein was Whitworth in waiting.

I remember when Havenstein was drafted.
In his profile it stated, right tackle ONLY and that's all I've ever seen out of him.

I think Havenstein's future this season is tied to camp. If they release him like I think they should then Noteboom will be RT. They would have to feel good about Brewer as swing OT before they would do it. Regardless, I have no doubt that Havenstein won't be on the team next year. His play has dropped off badly in 2019 and 2020 so releasing him this year has always made sense to me.

No way Gaines gets released. He out played SJD on fewer snaps. SJD is in a contract year and the drafting of Bobby Brown has signaled SJD's gone next year as well. If Brown looks good in camp I see SJD gone this year.

I've made no secret that I expect Okoronkwo to be released this year. Garrett is his replacement IMO. Ogbo simply hasn't shown enough.

Kiser was replaced the minute they drafted Jones. He's been one injury after another.

Hekker keeps his job.

Harris and Skowronek make Mundt too limited to keep. Harris as a receiver and Skowronek as a blocker.

Calais is gone as Funk will be the KO returner.

Xavier Jones needs to flash in TC to stay on the team.

Lawler being released wouldn't be a surprise IMO.

All of these guys probably will make it through camp except for Havenstein. They might release him sooner rather than later as a courtesy to allow him to sign elsewhere. Or they might be looking to trade him before TC.

If the Rams cut Havenstein they must not want to run right because Noteboom is not a right tackle and is not a good run blocker. Why weaken the team if it’s not necessary?

I guess if Brewer shows that he can play better than Rob then maybe. If Noteboom moves to the right who backs up Whitworth?

cutting Havenstein would unnecessarily create a hole on the line in a year that they are supposedly making a Super Bowl run.

Higs and Havs really the only two worth cutting when considering dead money and cap savings. But both are critical cogs. Havs is still one of the best run blocking Tackles and Higbee is critical to our scheme.

I think Obo has shown really nice flashes and could be a breakout player.

Are not the Rams Org over $7 million under the Cap so whats the purpose of these proposed surprised cuts?

Ref. Havenstein: So the Rams who lost their former all-pro starting LT for the latter half of the 2019 season due to injury (2nd knee injury to that same knee) plus that LT will be 40 before this season ends.....

Then the Rams trade away a Kings Ransom of future assets for a worn veteran QB just so they can line up a brand new untested completely new right-side RG & RT in 2021? Yep just brilliant!

So what would be gained from this release/cut ...anybody?

Reference Greg Gaines: Rams lose both of their long-time veteran 5 tech DL'ers & now Gaines who has been healthy & ready to go for all 34 Ram games since his arrival & played behind one the biggest surprise 6th rd draft selections @ NT in SJD.

Besides Gaines is under contract for 2 more seasons. Starting NT SJ-D will be a UFA in less than a year. Gaines is playing for a paltry amount of only $850K. Someone needs to brief me here....other than Gaines who has been groomed to be the starting NT when SJD departs? What would be gained from a release of Gaines?

Ref. Og Okoronkwo: Yes Og has been a medical mash unit by himself since he was drafted however the OLB'er unit is one of the weakest units on this Ram team. There is only one proven starter in this OLB unit. Coach Shula has only one other healthy proven backup OLB'er in former WWC Denver castoff Justin Hollins the rest of the OLB'ers are broken/unhealthy or unknown. The Rams only drafted one OLB'er with their last 7th rd draft selection in Chris Garrett. I sure do not see any advantage in releasing Okoronkwo.

This is one of those examples where the author of an article has less knowledge than the average ROD reader.

Maybe Kiser. But agree all those names are unlikely.

I'm going to throw out a name that's a bit off the wall. In light of his latest injury I'm thinking that if Darrell Henderson doesn't stay healthy this TC Coach Mac may have had enough.
Wouldn't be surprised much if Xavier Jones doesn't give Hendo a serious run for his money.

Remember your first and best ability is your availability.

I posted an article a few weeks ago about the top ten most explosive runners. Henderson made the list. I don’t think they can match that ability/size combo with anyone on the roster at the RB position. I think they stick it out with Henderson as long as the possibly can.

I get the durability concern but I would be surprised. I really like the combo.

Last Year's stats:
Akers 13 GP / 145 carries / 625 yards / 4.3 yards-per rush

Henderson 15 GP / 138 carries / 624 yards / 4.5 yards-per-rush

Absent a lingering injury/availability issue, I don’t see any of these guys being cut.
