Although Los Angeles Rams management may not have changed in recent years in print, it has definitely changed in principal. Meaning, the Tavon Austins of the world won’t be getting the huge contracts but productive players like Todd Gurley and Aaron Donald will if at all possible. Taken seriously these days is the responsibility of both current and future quality of the on-field product. Unfortunately, salary caps make it impossible to keep every quality player. This season it’s fast becoming apparent that considerable talent won’t make the final cut in just over one week from now. That said, here is the first of two 2019 Los Angeles Rams mock cutdown projections. Offense to follow.
Los Angeles Rams Mock Cutdown: Mid-Preseason Defense
A Look at Key Battles Among Back-ups Before Cutdown
Like the offense, most of the defensive starters are in place. However, taking a look at key position back-up battles as well as other considerations, you have to see that change is not only inevitable but a notable upgrade at certain positions.
Linebackers
Weakside Linebacker

(1) Dante Fowler | (2) Samson Ebukam | (3) Ogbonnia Okoronkwo | (4) Josh Carraway

What we saw from Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, first game back and all was outstanding. He’s a load and uneasily handled, as indicated by the penalty calls he inspired. It’s just one game and we can agree that he’s a bit rusty and can’t possibly be in game shape – encouraging, right? With just one tackle, one pass defended and one quarterback hit recorded in the box score, it was rather obvious he was more disruptive than these numbers tell. If ‘Obo,’ as conveniently referred to by coach Sean McVay, continues to progress it will be hard keeping him off the field. But (and in his case, it’s a big ‘but’) he has to stay healthy.
Outside Linebacker
(1) Clay Matthews | (2) Justin Lawler | (3) Trevon Young | (4) Landis Durham | (5) Natrez Patrick
Clay Matthews
has been a big-time player since coming into the league in 2009. Yes, ten seasons are under his belt already so we know we’re looking at changes in the near future. The six-time Pro Bowler hasn’t recorded double-digit sacks since 2014. This could change with his renewed spirit but the Rams don’t urgently need him to. At this point in his career and with emerging young talent, he will be spelled often enough.
Speaking of young talent, Landis Durham, a versatile linebacker/defensive end, has played extremely well at a time when fortune appears to smile his way. Wade Phillips has already pointed out that Matthews may no longer have the lateral movement of his younger years. Justin Lawler has been solid but is now out for a significant amount of time after foot surgery.
The undrafted Durham has been ultra-consistent to this point with a sack per game despite not having the help the starting defensive line would provide. He’ll need to rev up a more consistent motor at this level as his college game footage shows he can lose interest away from the play.
Inside Linebacker
(1) Micah Kiser | (2) Bryce Hager | (3) Troy Reeder | (4) Landis Durham |

This was more interesting before Micah Kiser went down. Frankly, because Bryce Hager and Troy Reeder were playing more interestingly in this Rams fan’s opinion.
Being partial to players that hustle all the time and even away from the ball, nobody’s caught my eye more than Reeder. Sure, he got that ill-advised penalty in which he nearly took the head off a quarterback during a slide — a late slide — but the man’s a dawg. This year’s Rams will have a few more dawgs than last year. On defense, that’s a good thing.
Reeder is somewhat raw at the pro level but he has a non-stop motor that reminds one of ex-Rams Grant Wistrom. Gut feeling says if he’s cut and picked up by another in the NFC West it could come back to haunt them. A tackling machine in college, he opened the preseason leading the team in tackles. You need players like this plugging the holes that still appear to be a problem this season so far. Call it a hunch as of now but Reeder’s a keeper.
Secondary

Left Cornerback
(1) Marcus Peters | (2) Nickell Robey-Coleman | (3) Darious Williams | (4) Dominique Hatfield | (5) Donte Deayon

The Rams are solid here on the surface and for now. Nickell Robey-Coleman is locked in slot coverage but things perk up above and below. It’s a wonderful headache that awaits the coaching staff.
As it stands, the difficulty (at least, from the fans’ perspective) lies in being sold on starter Marcus Peters should Aqib Talib either go down again, retire next season or become a salary cap casualty. With both entering contract seasons, the chances of seeing them play together in the new stadium are slimming.
Dominique Hatfield has had chances but is proving limited while Darious Williamsand Donte Deayon appear to be hungry upstarts. Williams, in particular, has been a pleasant surprise considering the second-year player (waived by the Baltimore Ravens in 2018) only has real-game experience on special teams.
In two preseason outings, he has eight total tackles (all solo) while leading the team in passes defended (2). What’s interesting for Rams fans to note, this kid played at the smaller University of Alabama-Birmingham. At the time he played, UAB was just one year returned after a two-year football program shutdown. Ignored by most scouts and mainstream media he was not invited to that year’s NFL Combine. Had he been there and posted his UAB pro day numbers we would know him as a 2018 top-ten combine performer and a much higher draft prospect.
Right Cornerback
(1) Aqib Talib | (2) Troy Hill | (3) Kevin Peterson | (4) David Long

Talib is currently the secondary’s stud. After that, enjoy the ride.
This is going to play itself out in the next two preseason games but my money’s on young talent beating out Troy Hill. Although he’s been a capable and available spot-filler type, his inconsistency is well-documented. Why then would an equally-talented and more physically-gifted newbie with definite upside not be retained over fifth-year Hill? Hill’s upside is on the downslide while Kevin Peterson is flat out balling.
David Long is in the mix and improving from one game to the next (second in total tackles last week). Williams or Deayon can also move and be playmakers with experience. Deayon continues to be around the ball but making the cut will be difficult.
Final Rams Cutdown Projections
Losing a few veterans along the way is necessary for financial balance and to put forth the highest quality product long term. Below looks like quite the team overall but just how likely is the drastic change implied below?
LDE (1) Michael Brockers | (2) John Franklin-Myers | (3) Marquise Copeland
NT (1) Sebastian Joseph-Day | (2) Greg Gaines
DT (1) Aaron Donald
WILL (1) Dante Fowler | (2) Samson Ebukam | (3) Ogbonnia Okoronkwo |
OLB (1) Clay Matthews | (3) Landis Durham | (5) Natrez Patrick
ILB (1) Cory Littleton | (2) Dakota Allen | (4) Travin Howard
ILB (1) Bryce Hager | (2) Troy Reeder
LCB (1) Marcus Peters | (2) Nickell Robey-Coleman | (3) Darious Williams
RCB (1) Aqib Talib | (2) Kevin Peterson | (3) David Long
SS (1) John Johnson III | (2) Taylor Rapp | (3) Steven Parker
FS (1) Eric Weddle | (2) Marqui Christian

Rams Mock Cutdown

Keep in mind that these selections are based solely on players playing this preseason and how they’ve taken advantage of the opportunities. Injuries are considered as well.

He has 28 people of the 53 man roster on defense. Add to that the 3 special teams specialists and that leaves 22 for offense. I get that he's saying who's played the best but he doesn't have Bones' personal draft pick among that 28 and that won't happen. I can't see McVay cutting his guy. Take off Parker trade Christian. Take off one of Howard or Reeder along with likely Copeland and you're getting close. Can't see either side having more than 26 people.

1) He also forgets Troy Hill signed a new contract and now comes with over a $2mi. hit in dead money.
2) Travin Howard could potentially be IR'd, not sure about the extent of his injury.
3) Parker or Christian, not sure about both.
4) One of Patrick or Durham, doubtful on both. Can't see 11 LB's being kept.

Whatever happens, these are going to be some tough cuts.

Los Angeles Rams Mock Cutdown: Mid-Preseason Offense

Los Angeles Rams Mock CutdownHONOLULU, HI - AUGUST 17: John Kelly #42 of the Los Angeles Rams runs with the ball after making a catch during the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys at Aloha Stadium on August 17, 2019 in Honolulu, Hawaii. (Photo by Darryl Oumi/Getty Images)

Soon after the Los Angeles Rams dropped their second preseason game to the Dallas Cowboys, 14-10, grumblings of discontentment slid through cracks in the team’s fan base like snakes with poison apples. The true and longtime Rams faithful responded accordingly cutting the negativity off at the neck. This is because they understand that today’s Rams have long-term goals as well as the immediate task of winning a Super Bowl. With most of the offense returning, the coaches already know what they have in the starters. These fans know, too, and have questions about the rest of the offensive talent. Here is that side with the Los Angeles Rams mock cutdown projections.
Los Angeles Rams Mock Cutdown: Mid-Preseason Offense
What could possibly happen here? The Rams offensive unit is mostly set.
Here’s the thing. A good-size portion of the rest of the football world saw last year’s Super Bowl and said things along the lines of, “Coach [Sean] McVay’s been figured out,” “He was exposed!” and my personal favorite, “HE’S A FRAUD!” The fools.
Even the best have bad days. Take the New England Patriots, since we’re talking Super Bowl and the current best team. The Patriots lost five games in 2018. In three of them, they scored just 10 points each. They lost those games to the Detroit Lions (who finished 6-10), Tennessee Titans (9-7), and Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7). The closest was seven points, the other two they lost by a combined 40 points. Bad days or is Bill Belichick a fraud?
While it sounds like I may be stalling (and I am) because there’s not a whole lot that matters regarding the Rams starting offense in terms of changes coming from what we’ve seen in preseason, there’s still some method to the madness revealed.
Quarterback
(1) Jared Goff | (2) Blake Bortles | (3) Brandon Allen | (4) John Wolford
Although it’s only for one season, Blake Bortles is the clear top choice back-up to Jared Goff. This won’t change regardless of what the other two quarterbacks do the remainder of the preseason.
As for the second and third-strings, Allen and Wolford, there will be plenty of available footage for other needy teams. The two are taking turns each week looking the best, Wolford week one and Allen week two. The Rams are likely to keep three quarterbacks again because of the uncertainty of the offensive line. They can surely become a formidable force improving all season long but an injury or two might devastate plans. Still, Rams fans have been breathing louder sighs of relief lately knowing their team’s quarterback depth is considerably upgraded.
Running Back
(1) Todd Gurley | (2) Malcolm Brown | (3) John Kelly | (4) Justin Davis | (5) Darrell Henderson Jr. | (6) Matt Colburn
Now that the speculation about some rookie coming in to replace what could be a Hall of Fame running back in Todd Gurley has died to the lowest mumbling since last draft day, do we have your attention now?
The Rams are simply acknowledging that major knee surgery, as well as surgeries anywhere on the body, has risks. Most of us will never intimately know but plastic surgery also has long-term effects one must incorporate into today’s care. Resting Gurley periodically means that he doesn’t play during garbage time. It may also include sitting him in games the Rams are favored heavily to win. Rams fans can live with that because Gurley has already exited some games that were well in hand. Games in which he had top-shelf fantasy numbers at the end of three quarters. The secret key here is exciting news that also falls under method to the madness.
Moving past the obviousness of Gurley dominating when he does play, we find more good news. Malcolm Brown is poised to see more mileage than ever, especially on the goal line. With four years under his belt with the Rams, he’s flourished only under McVay. Unfortunately, in two seasons he has just one touchdown on the ground and one by air to show for it. This is likely to change in 2019 depending on how he holds up as he’s not played all 16 games under McVay. Unlike last preseason when he had significant carries, Brown has not gotten any so far this preseason…as if he were a co-starter. Just saying.
The Only Battle Here Isn’t Really A Battle
As for Henderson, welcome to the big leagues, rookie! It seems appropriate. After enjoying that much-publicized 8.9 yards per carry average through college, he’s now struggling to keep his head above 2.0 yards a carry in preseason play. Improvement is noted from the first game to the second despite it not having much effect on his average. Look for him to be a team leader again in carries week three. He needs the work.
John Kelly, a 2018 6th-round draft choice, came to the Rams and immediately leaped over the 2017 pick-up, Justin Davis. He is doing all he can to prevent this from happening to him a year later. He’s the Rams leading rusher in yards like he was the previous preseason, by far. However, the Rams appear set on using Henderson a lot more in the passing game. He’s caught seven passes in two games, two less than Kelly in two entire preseasons. The young man is being groomed for primetime if needed.
The Method to Sean McVay‘s Madness
I don’t know who else saw it but there was a look McVay had at the end of the Super Bowl. A look that said, “I blew it but it won’t happen again.”
While Belichick is being considered the greatest coach in NFL history, McVay is a better offensive mind. For that matter, ex-Rams offensive coordinator Mike Martz was, too. The Patriots will never pay players top dollar overall under current management so Bill looks to all other avenues. What many call cheating is actually being a master of all other available resources.
McVay does McVay and what he’s doing now is opening up the playbook and putting together extensive offensive packages. Goff is ready for more and what the league thinks it’s prepared for is now last year’s iPhone. The Rams now have another genius the likes of Martz but with much better head coaching skills. Count on his team looking more polished and explosive throughout the regular season.
Final Rams Cutdown Projections
There’s more attention on a few new players than is spoken about publicly. We may be in for a mild but pleasant surprise or two next week.
WR (1) Cooper Kupp | (2) Josh Reynolds | (3) Mike Thomas
TE (1) Tyler Higbee | (2) Gerald Everett | (3) Johnny Mundt
LT (1) Andrew Whitworth | (2) David Edwards
LG (1) Joe Noteboom
C (1) Brian Allen
RG (1) Austin Blythe | (2) Jeremiah Kolone
RT (1) Rob Havenstein | (2) Bobby Evans
WR (1) Brandin Cooks | (2) Nsimba Webster
WR (1) Robert Woods | (2) KhaDarel Hodge
QB (1) Jared Goff | (2) Blake Bortles | (3) John Wolford
RB (1) Todd Gurley | (2) Malcolm Brown | (3) Darrell Henderson Jr. | (4) John Kelly

The Rams may likely need more offensive line help with Aaron Neary facing suspension at the start of the season. Jamil Demby doesn’t appear to be a good enough fit at the back-up spot as well and we have every right to believe the coaching staff sees it more than us.
Good to remember that a number of players will be placed on the Rams practice squad and not lost for good.
If you missed it, be sure and check out the defensive version of this article.
