Look out, L.A.: Rams' defense gaining momentum as playoffs approach - NFC West- ES

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- There was no way Kenny Young was going to run out of steam as he looked ahead to the end zone.
With cornerback Jalen Ramsey blocking and defensive tackle Aaron Donald directing traffic, the Los Angeles Rams linebacker sprinted 79 yards to return an interception for a touchdown in a 24-3 victory over the New England Patriots on "Thursday Night Football.

""That's my favorite play of the game because you see two of the best players in the world out in front blocking for him and the genuine joy," Rams coach Sean McVay said."All I felt was a bunch of guys running behind me blocking and us trying to get the score," Young said. "And that felt pretty good to know my brothers was behind my back."

The Rams' defense has been dominant this season and the catalyst for a 9-4 record that has them atop the NFC West with three games remaining.

Part of their growth has been through scheme and technique, but players say they've also experience a galvanizing effect navigating an unusual season in mostly empty arenas, including SoFi Stadium, amid the coronavirus pandemic."You have no fans, you have nothing else, so it's all about ball and you see how connected a team is," defensive lineman Michael Brockers said. "So without fans, we're doing a helluva job continuing to have our energy up. We actually like and love one another."

Under first-year coordinator Brandon Staley, the defense ranks second in the NFL in efficiency and has allowed only 18.9 points per game, which ranks third behind the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins. Recently, that unit has dialed up the turnovers and defensive scores.

In the first eight games of the season, the Rams had 10 takeaways, which ranked in the middle of the league. But over the past five games, they've produced 11 turnovers, which ranks second during that span and vaults them to the No. 2 spot overall behind the Steelers and tied with the Dolphins.

And in each of the past three games, the defense has returned a turnover for a touchdown, becoming the first team to accomplish such a feat this season and the first Rams defense to score three touchdowns in three games since 2003."We've been getting our hands on a lot of balls in practice as far as tips and overthrows and picks and stuff like that and we've been returning them in practice," said Brockers, who had his first multisack game of the season against the Patriots. "It's all about the work that we put in during the week of practice, and that gives us the confidence to go out here and play lights out."

in the first quarter, Rams quarterback Jared Goff threw an interception, and the Patriots, trailing 10-0, were approaching scoring position from the Rams' 19-yard line. Young's instinct kicked in and he picked off quarterback Cam Newtonand scored, putting the Rams up 17-0."Honestly, seeing Cam, he's a big guy so you can't miss him, so just his whole mannerisms showed that he was about to throw a screen," Young said. "So I just jumped as he threw a bad ball and he paid for that."
The interception was the first of Young's three-year career."What a swing in momentum," McVay said.

The Rams' defensive front also kept the pressure on the Patriots, holding them to 107 rushing yards, down from the Pats' 147.5 average. And they forced Patriots coach Bill Belichick to replace Newton in the fourth quarter with Jarrett Stidham.

The Rams sacked Newton four times and took Stidham down twice. Their 42 sacks this season ranks second behind the Steelers' 44. When asked if the defense was peaking at an opportune time, Brockers provided an analogy he deemed more appropriate."I wouldn't want to say we peaked, because after a peak you are going downhill," Brockers said. "We are continuing to just keep climbing, getting better and just keep staying consistent each and every week."

Rams held Patriots to worst offensive game ever under Belichick, according to this stat
Rams held Patriots to worst offensive game ever under Belichick, according to this stat (yahoo.com)Cameron DaSilvaSat, December 12, 2020

For as much attention as the Rams offense has gotten in the last three-plus years, it’s been their defense that has stolen the show this season. Led by first-year coordinator Brandon Staley, the Rams defense has been one of the best units in the NFL.

They’ve allowed the fewest total yards, fewest passing yards and third-fewest rushing yards, ranking first in the NFL in yards and points allowed per drive. The Patriots got a healthy serving of L.A.’s defense on Thursday night as the Rams completely shut down Cam Newton and New England’s offense, winning 24-3.

The scoreboard obviously shows this was a dominant defensive performance by the Rams, but the analytics tell an even better story. Mike Sando of The Athletic tweeted that the Patriots’ offensive EPA (expected points added) on Thursday night was -27.5.

That makes this the worst offensive performance ever by the Patriots in 374 games under Bill Belichick – including the postseason.
#Patriots' offensive performance during 24-3 loss to #Rams was their worst in 374 games under coach Bill Belichick.
Offensive EPA was -27.5
Previous low: -24.4 vs #Ravens in WC game after '10 season, then -22.8 vs #Bills in famous '03 Lawyer Milloy game.

EPA essentially measures the difference between the expected points at the start of a play and the expected points added at the end. It’s a way to find out how much each play impacts a game and the effectiveness of the offense (or defense).

The Patriots offense gifted seven points to the Rams with a pick-six, mustered only 220 yards on 58 plays and went 0-for-4 in the red zone by coming away with just three points in those four trips.

The Patriots only had the ball for three and a half fewer minutes than the Rams, but they could do very little to move downfield against Los Angeles. The Rams were in complete control from start to finish, largely thanks to an outstanding performance by the defense

My mindset is completely flipped this year. I am looking for the offense to play tough smart football. Not looking for them to score a lot of TDs but able to keep move the ball enough to get FGs, eat the clock and punch it in 2 times a game. For the defense, I am looking for complete dominance, destruction and delivery. Pickoffs, sacks, goal line stances, pressure, physicality that breaks the will if their opponents. And as Brock so elegantly stated - keep improving and peak at the end of the year not now.

The excellence of the Rams defense plus all the Goff talk got me thinking and made me look up Trent Dilfer.
What?!?!? Yeah, remember, it's Super Bowl Champion Trent Dilfer.

All of Dilfer's numbers pretty much suck, until you look at the turnovers: only 1 int and no fumbles lost in that Championship run.

Count me in the mindset flipping crowd too. The Rams don't actually need Ravens-level dominance because Goff is not Dilfer-level suck. But, we don't need Goff to be the savior or to light up the scoreboard. We don't even need Goff to be much of a game manager. I think we just need continued defensive excellence and Goff to be a game-not-giver-awayer and the Rams will be in real good shape.

I'm thinking boring offense plus an improving defense might be enough to do it this year.

McVay believes Donald and Ramsey have potential to be an all-time great tandem (yahoo.com)

McVay believes Donald and Ramsey have potential to be an all-time great tandem

It’s not often you see the best player at one position play on the same defense as another player who’s also considered the best at his respective position. But for the Los Angeles Rams, that certainly seems to be the case.
They made the bold decision last year to pair Jalen Ramsey with Aaron Donald, creating an elite tandem on defense. And then this offseason, they ensured that duo would stay together for the foreseeable future by extending Jalen Ramsey with a five-year contract.

With Donald and Ramsey leading the defense, it’s no surprise the Rams rank among the NFL’s best in just about every category on that side of the ball; third in scoring, first in yards, second in third-down percentage. The list goes on.

The long-term potential of this pairing is incredible, especially considering neither player has even turned 30 yet. Sean McVay believes Donald and Ramsey have a chance to become an all-time tandem if they continue to play the way they have. “The answer is yes,” McVay said Friday when asked if they could be one of the best duos ever. “I can even remember a couple of years ago, when Les (Snead) and I were first discussing the potential of acquiring Jalen and you say, OK, you’ve got Aaron and you can pair him with who we think is the most special player on the backend in the NFL at that spot.’ To be able to get those two together, that’s why we thought it was important to be able to get Jalen under contract. So, I do think so.

"You see two of the best players in the world out in front blocking for him."

Donald and Ramsey can’t carry the entire defense themselves. For a unit to be truly great, it takes all 11 starters, and then some from the backups. That’s what the Rams have gotten out of their defense this year and it’s led to one of the best defenses in franchise history.

Having two All-Pros makes life a lot easier for Brandon Staley and the rest of the defense, though, giving the coaches a number of options thanks to their versatility and talent.Ramsey can play the slot, outside, line up at safety. You name it. Donald can rush over the center, the guard or kick outside and essentially become an edge rusher and have success at all of those spots.

That expands the playbook and leads to defensive dominance. I think the power of this unit has been the unit, but those two in particular give us a variety and the ability to affect and change the game in so many different ways,” McVay continued. “I mean, Aaron’s versatility up front and all the different ways he can apply pressure, but then Jalen’s as versatile of DB as you’re going to see, in terms of being able to go outside, play on their No. 1 receiver, bump inside at the star position, blitz, tackle.

I mean, he’s not just a corner, he’s a great football player. I do think that this year has been a reflection of that. That was a big reason when I first talked to Brandon Staley last year, was the vision that he had for those two players, for John Johnson, being able to try to say, ‘Okay, if you lose a (Dante) Fowler, let’s go get a Leonard Floyd. So, I’ve loved what this unit is about, but those two have definitely done a great job leading the way. I am hopeful and that’s kind of the goal for us if these guys keep doing what they’re doing.”

Donald is one of the favorites to win Defensive Player of the Year again, right there with T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett. Ramsey is also in the mix after locking down DK Metcalf, Mike Evans and DeAndre Hopkins in the last month. Ramsey believes Donald should win it, saying people are “spoiled” by his greatness each year, but the fact that both players are in consideration is a testament to their talent level.

So much talk about Brandon Staley leaving for a head coaching job after this season.

Well, is Staley really that great? Or, are the "players" on the field making him out to be better? I think it's the latter!

You got one guy on the d-line reeking havoc, making the others on the line better, and also freeing up LB's. Then, you got another guy, a DB, locking up half of the field, freeing up other DB's and making them more effective.

This Seems To Be The Magic Sauce to build a top five defense! Get your two top flite guys and fill in the other 9 spots with serviceable players.

To me, way more credit goes to the guys getting the players on the field. Not as much to the coach.

If Staley was the Cowboys or some other bad defense's coach, would he make such the "splash" he is making with the Rams defense this season? I don't think so!

Hopefully, other teams that are going to need a new Head Coach recognize this, and pass on Staley, so he stays the Rams DC., which is the point I'm making in this post. I think Staley stays a Ram for a while as other teams look at the whole picture of what is making this Rams defense great...the players way more than the coach!

Last year watching the 22 these guys were lost in zone on a lot of snaps. Breakdowns in comms and coverage all over. In one offseason Staley installed a new scheme and got everyone playing fast and they are getting better and better.

That is great coaching. There were breakdowns early this season but he has coached them up to where they are executing and firing off almost every snap. He's for real.
