Johnny Hekker won't like this, but why punt at all?

The Hook and Ladder play is a prime example of what he's talking about.

Plays like this have been around for a long time and if executed properly can be used to devastating effect. And yes, incorporating rugby techniques CAN be very effective.

Imagine: Tavon Austin catches a 10 yard in. The corner is closing on him and the safety is also closing on him. Now, normally, a nearby WR, let's say Bailey, would try to block the safety, but instead, Bailey starts accelerating against the grain just behind Austin. If the safety breaks down on Austin, Austin laterals to Bailey who now turns the corner behind the corner who just tackled Austin without the ball and Bailey has nothing, but End Zone in front of him.

If the safety breaks on Bailey, then the fake lateral and acceleration upfield by Austin is enough to gain more yards.

The point is that it adds variables for the defense to think about.

And as we saw last year when our defense was thinking early in the season... a thinking defense is a defense that breaks down and gives up big plays.

Would it ever need to be on the scale as what that HS coach would run? Heck no. The point would be to CREATE DOUBT.

Played Rugby in college, balls ginormous compared to football, definitely makes it easier to lateral. Think there's more chance for turnover in NFL.

By the By, Anyone remember GSOT days with the hook and ladder from Bruce to Trung Candidate?

I think if there are 2 plays called, 3rd down wouldn't have as much pressure on it and go no huddle on 4th would be pretty advantageous
