Rams punter Johnny Hekker has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his role in helping the Rams beat the Jets last Sunday.
It’s fitting that a punter would be honored for his performance in a 9-6 barnburner. Hekker helped his team’s defense with 78-yard punt in the fourth quarter when the game was tied. The punt was caught by Jalin Marshall of the Jets at his own 5-yard line, meaning it traveled 78 yards in the air.
He also had punts of 59 and 52 yards, respectively, in the game.
The weekly honor is the second of Hekker’s career. He joins Sean Landeta, who won five, as the only Rams’ punters to win multiple player of the week awards.
Hekker, who’s in his fifth season, is averaging 46.6 yards per punt. He averaged a career-best 47.9 per punt last season.
