John Bonamego looks to keep specialists' routines intact

Special teams coordinators are a tight-knit group in the NFL coaching fraternity, so much so that the Rams' newest one, John Bonamego, happens from the same coaching tree as his predecessor, John Fassel.

It's a good sign for a unit that has been together for a long time. And if it's not enough of a hint about emphasizing continuity, it's one of Bonamego's main objectives as he gets settled.

"Those guys are like any other position. They want to be coached, they want to get better," Bonamego said. "It's really working with them and establishing a rapport, a routine, learning what they can do and what they do well. Like any other player, try to keep them out of the situations that are asking them to do things that they don't do well. The No. 1 takeaway there is communication."

Bonamego wants to instill a fundamentally sound, accountable culture within the Rams special teams. Successfully doing so starts with learning the regular habits of players like punter Johnny Hekker, kicker Greg Zuerlein and long snapper Jake McQuaide.

The trio have been together since 2012 and provided stability to the Rams' special teams, and Bonamego's familiarity with them goes back well before his arrival in Los Angeles.

"A lot of those guys I've looked at coming out of the draft," Bonamego said. "I had a pretty good relationship with Johnny before he signed here. I was in Jacksonville at the time, we took a kid by the name Bryan Anger instead, but I remember those conversations."

With that foundation, he explained how he'll get to know his new players better.

He wants to be straightforward by saying this is what their workload will look like on a given day, but he also wants their feedback.

"Now within that, what do you guys think? Is this dramatically different from what you've done before?" Bonamego said, explaining that process.

A 17-year NFL coaching veteran, Bonamego emphasizes communication because it's what his mentor, the late Frank Gansz, passed down to him. (Fassel worked with Gansz' son, Frank Jr., in Baltimore in 2006 and 2007.)

"A commitment to the fundamentals, and how he taught and communicated it," Bonamego said, when how the elder Gansz impacted his coaching career. "How he handled players in meetings, how he practiced, his communication, his attention to detail, all of those things. Just a really, really special, unique individual."

The elder Gansz won a Super Bowl with the Rams as then-head coach Dick Vermeil's special teams coordinator. Similarly, Bonamego will be looking to get the current team back to the postseason, and that starts with building relationships with his new specialists and understanding how they operate.

"Those guys are like baseball pitchers, you always have to be cognizant of that,"

Bonamego said. "A baseball guy throws, he's off a couple days because you have to give him time to recover. Punting a football, kicking off a football, that's a very violent, explosive act. You just gotta always know where they're at physically, and how they're feeling, because it's a long season and you want them there. You want them available and you want feeling good on Sunday when it counts."

Well, after finishing 2nd overall in McVay's first year, the Rams had slid the last two years, where they were 23rd overall and Bonemego's Lions were 8th overall, but sometimes you have to dive into the numbers as many of us understand.

The Detroit Lions were 8th overall when you combine the special team units as a whole, as the Lions were number one overall in punt return average, but dead last in kick off return average. On the bright side the Lion have excellent specialist in Punter Matt Wile, who finished first overall and Matt Prater is one of the better place kickers in the NFL, but although the Rams finished 23rd overall, they did not allow really any big returns on punts or kick offs that I recollect.

Again I love some of the coaching additions like O'Connell, Brandon Staley (love the new defense) and running back Thomas Brown and at the press conference Sean McVay stated they would hire a new Strength & Conditioning coach next month, but although John Bonemego is well seasoned, I felt John Fassel was one of the top three special team coaches in the NFL, I don't classify John Bonemego that way, but maybe he'll bring a since of calm to the unit and they will respond accordingly.

As Head Coach at Central Michigan he battled cancer before he coached his first game and was an inspiration to his team and guided the Chippewas to a West Division Title in his first year and records of 7-6, 6-7 & 8-5 in his first three seasons, but in his last year his team fell apart and finished with the worst record in School history at 1-11 and was fired from his Alma Mater.

The Detroit Lions brought him back in 2019 and Bonemego did improve the unit from 19th overall to 8th, however, when making coaching changes, Matt Patricia included Bonemego in his firings of 6 assistant coaches as he felt the Lions had too many penalties on special teams, which led, Patricia to hire a younger Brayden Coombs....So now we find out if Bonemego being available will be a good thing....IMO, I have a hard time thinking that the unit will have the same zest they did under Jim Fassel, but maybe a steady hand is truly what Ram special teams need moving forward.

Is that combined returns & coverage Den? Or just returns.

Combined for example the Lions were first overall in Punt Returns and last in Kick Off return coverage and with other factors, they were 8th overall. Again, I don't understand how you can give up any yardage on kick returns, just instruct your kicker to kick it out of the end zone, it's not that hard. Again, some special teams coaches trying to think too much, like, "Kick it short and we'll hem them in deeper in their own territory." So the kicker, either kicks it out of bounds or the guy returns the to the 40 or worse.

Right on man. I didn't really look too deep because it's hard to define how good the ST roster is from team to team outside of maybe the kickers. So much of it comes down to whether the HC is giving the teams' coach priority on final bottom roster cuts.

And I agree re: the kickoffs.

Hopefully this draft will include a plus punt returner. That would be a really nice addition to the depth chart.

Punt and kick return game has been weak for the last two seasons. I hope we get someone soon. Getting someone who has the ability to flip the field on returns would add another dimension to the Rams.

WR Nsimba Webster should get a very good opportunity to showcase his Punt & Kickoff returns early this year now that Jo Jo Natson is no longer under a Ram contract for this upcoming 2020 season. I would look for the Rams to draft a RB who would also add some excitement into the ST's for our new coach. Henderson was MIA involving ST's. He was very disappointing in all phases of his rookie season IMO.

I also believe that Webster could be a special receiver as well.
