Jared Goff film breakdown, why the Rams paid him the big bucks

Excellent synopsis. Goff is the least of our problems. Like the guy says, if our O line can even get to average we will be a much improved team and back in the thick of things playoff wise. The thing that kills me is the media's refusal to acknowledge his skills. To do so would be them admitting how wrong they were in their initial assessment after 2016. We all know they won't do that, so instead they stand by with pitchforks at the ready for any opportunity to pounce on him.

Goff is a damn fine QB and I think last season was actually his best, obv not statistically, but what he was able to do without good protection or a threatening run game was very impressive imo. All season long, he found ways to get the ball downfield with amazing pressure around him.
If they can keep his jersey clean, we should be back in the playoffs.

They've already proven they can win with Goff. He's not the problem. I know some people think the big contract was a mistake. But face it. Quarterbacks get paid. In a couple years that contract will be middle of the road and the people who are saying they shouldn't have paid him will be saying they have a good quarterback on a team friendly deal.

Yep looking at that video shows me that Blythe despite playing "great" still sucks at center. This is the guy people want to start? He simply sucks when left one on one. He's no rookie but he plays like one and his technique is crap. It doesn't show his crap second level blocking necessary for an inside run game. Watching that short clip is all you need to see who really is the weak point on the o-line.

If Blythe starts again it's because Kromer isn't watching the game film. This is especially true since they have multiple options at the position with Shelton and Allen. Praying that Havenstein somehow "returns" to form is like praying for rain in a typhoon. He's never had quick feet but last year exposed him like never before vs outside speed. Getting better play at RT and C (i.e. from other than Blythe and Havenstein) is the key to the o-line play this year.

In Rob's defense, his strength be it what it may, has always been his run blocking. He is decent to good on the second level. If Havenstein starts as anticipated due to his contract, it's imperative that the TE gives him help with a chip on passing plays. Too many times that simply didn't happen (again at the feet of Kromer).

Goff isn't the problem and hasn't been the last two years. He carried this offense when there was no run game and where the defense made every game a shootout. An improved blocking scheme in the run attack IMO will be the key to the return of that part of the offense. Balance the offense and pressure on Goff in the passing game won't be so intense where defenses knew from the start that they didn't have to fear the run game.

IMO they have the guys, now they need the coaching from Kromer and Dickerson to step up.

First and foremost, we have an unanswered question about the OL:
Will it be better than last season?

Rams were 10th in scoring offense with no run game and a porous OL. Think about that for a moment.

Rams were 5th in passing yards per game. Most amazing to me also is that we were 13th in yards per attempt, which speaks to the cajones the young man has in terms of keeping his eyes downfield in spite of that porous line.

Really hope this young QB of ours gets good protections this season. That's the key for a big win total and playoffs. But to win in the playoffs he's going to need a run game too.

That video was from different years. I think Goff throws the ball away under pressure and makes him look worse than he is. It's a smart play when he has limited time due to pressure. Sometimes he forces throws or as mentioned throws without identifying defenders in the area when under pressure. He has to limit those throws. That showed some amazing throws and even some that were off where catchable. The lack of the run threat last year allowed defenses to tee off on Goff more than usual. McVay needs to re-establish the run game early this year. I think he will make that a priority. Of course, the O Line has to step up. I think people/media need to watch entire games and not just a few bad plays to really see how good Goff is.

Why we're taking another huge risk with our o-line a year after it killed our season truly, truly baffles me. It is the key to the running game getting back on track, and Goff bouncing back. We should have nutted up in free agency or in the draft instead of roll the dice again. Not a fan of the gamble.

IYO with how you evaluated Goff and the faults he does have do you think it would have been prudent to send him to a team like the Dolphins or Bengals in this last years draft? Avoid paying that 35 million a year and loading up on some vet talent and drafting a rookie QB like Tua or Burrow? Plus some extra cheap talent likely acquired in the draft.

Slow developing play actions from under center with a OL that does a poor job in pass protection leads to the QB having a tough time.

Not having a running threat amplifies the difficulty both face on those calls. Even when the down and distance does not favor the likelihood of a passing play.

McVay developed an almost Fisher like predictablity on offense midway through last year. Finally snapped out of it by the 2nd SF game.

Gurley was unceremoniously dumped and in all likelihood will be replaced by the Rams top draft pick. While the OL got no FA help and a single bottom of barrel draft pick.

That indicates to me where the coaching staff thought they had a serious problem that needing fixing. Given their track record I am not yet ready to doubt their decisions.

If the OL plays well and the play calling is creative and unpredictable then Goff will be fine. He is about the least of my worries.

Appreciate it! Granted my knowledge of cap stuff is limited mostly to what Overthecap.com tells me but it looks like if Goff was traded pre-June 1, the Rams would have had to eat $29 Million in dead money while the trade partner would take the rest of the non-guaranteed portion of the contract. This mostly comes from the $21 million roster bonus -- which can't be traded to another team. So from that standpoint, I don't think it would've been feasible.

From a prospect standpoint, ultimately, you hope to draft a QB that you give a second contract to and that's exactly what the Rams did. I think he's a better prospect and more talented than Tua. Burrow is exciting to me but I really do believe in Goff and I think you would have probably had to bundle something with Goff to get the Bengals to give up the 1st overall pick. I think those picks would've better been invested in building around Goff who has shown promise and more importantly, growth. A couple years ago people were saying he was done now that McVay couldn't talk to him up until the snap and defenses would change after the mic cut off. He's grown and begun to read defenses better and has started to throw with more anticipation and understanding. He's still getting better and that's what's most encouraging to me. Will he ever run around like Russell Wilson? No. But he can be a really good quarterback and play his own style of game. It just might not be as flashy as some other quarterbacks that get more of the spotlight.

Haven’t felt this confident about a QB wearing the horns since the start of the 2000 season with Warner. Goff is the present and future of the Rams at QB. AD still the best player in the league
