It's Official: Rams' Return To Los Angeles Is A Rousing Success

Raise your hand if you thought the Rams would manage something in the neighborhood of 4-12 upon returning to Los Angeles in 2016. All of you? That's what I thought.

Now raise your hand if you expected anything resembling an 11-5 rebound season in 2017. Now raise a leg if truly, honestly, if your life depended on it, you expected the team to improve after seven straight losses (and 11 of 12) to finish their first season in L.A. to the playoffs the following year, behind a second-year leader named Jared Goff, who'd finished his rookie season with a total quarterback rating of 18.3?

Now raise your other leg if you expected the season you're watching now: the 10-1, 35-points-per-game Super-Bowl-contending-powerhouse third-year-return-home Los Angeles Rams. A lot of fans, having lifted both legs, rolling on the floor with big smiles, I see.

I don't know about you, but truth be told, happy as I was about the Rams returning to L.A. -- which I wished for for years -- I never really expected any great success on the field. Not this much success, and certainly not this fast. I'd heard the warnings out of St. Louis, about how Stan Kroenke doesn't really care about winning, and even if he did, he wouldn't know how to go about it.

I bought into it to a degree. Not a lot, but a little. I figured Kroenke wouldn't move halfway across the country and build not just a stadium, but a mini-city off the 405 just to fall all over himself, piling up losing season after losing season. Sure, his team had managed five double-figure-loss seasons out of the previous 10 in Missouri, with an 8-8 campaign as the absolute best they could do (in 2006) but I was hopeful. I wasn't expecting anything like what we're watching now, however. Not in season three.

Of course, I didn't know at the time that Jeff Fisher would be given the heave-ho 13 weeks into the 2016 season, and a grand total of eight days after being awarded a generous contract extension by club management. I didn't know then -- I couldn't know then -- that the Rams had 30-year-old Sean McVay up their jersey sleeve, that'd he blossom essentially overnight into the 2017 NFL Coach of the Year, that he'd actually improve upon that the next season, and be responsible for what the rest of the league is watching with envy now.

I didn't know then what I know now, and that must be said as emphatically as is humanly possible: It's official -- the Rams return to Los Angeles is a rousing success. It's something not even the most optimistic of prognosticators could have foreseen three years ago. The team is averaging 72,178 in attendance this season, in an old stadium for built track and field, with crappy parking and even worse freeway access. Some 77,002 Southern Californians showed up early and were in their seats at rush hour last night, for a game that was scheduled to be played in another country just days before, roaring from the outset.

The team rewarded the patrons with an historic 54-51 Monday Night Football win over the previously-9-1 Kansas City Chiefs and now stands as the NFL's winningest team. They'd likely clinch the NFC West next weekend, if not for the fact this it's their bye week.

I'm looking forward to the Detroit Lions December 2, I'm looking forward to the playoffs this year, the final season at the Coliseum next year, and the opening of the new stadium in 2020. And I think the city of Los Angeles owes a hearty thank you this Thanksgiving week to Mr. Kroenke, to Mr. McVay, to Executive Vice President of Football Operations and CEO Kevin Demoff, and perhaps most importantly, to General Manager Les Snead.

I didn't know Snead had it in him. Raise your hands and legs -- not all at once, please -- if you did.

There have been plenty of criticism of the crowds in Los Angeles not being pro Rams, but Monday Night was spectacular and close to 80.000 screaming Ram fans, it was beautiful and gave even more ammunition for the talking heads of how the Chiefs were on the road, although both teams had to relocate and the Rams could not stay at home.

I told a Co-Worker before 2017's draft but after the free agent signings that we were going 9-7.

He thought I was full of crap but I said I really like what I see in Goff even after the season he had.

I told everyone that we had the worst offensive coordinator in the history of football after I re-watched the games Goff played. He had absolutely no help whatsoever in the game plan.

And I had high hopes in McVay since he did well as an offensive coordinator in Washington. And a high belief in Wade.

About half the Ram fans I knew before the Rams left stayed Ram fans.
It would take some time to get things back on track with a new fan base.
Exciting winning is a quick short cut.
I had no opinion of McVay when he was hired.
I figured the hire was either inspired or desperate.
Keeping the front office together after several years of disappointing results has been key.

Fisher's losing had killed almost all of the enthusiasm that was building with the team returning. The way McVay has resurrected the franchise is almost unbelievable. He's as bright as Martz, but he sees the big picture in team building and bonding. Demoff and Kroenke hit a grand slam with McVay. He's going to change the course of history for the Rams and the NFL IMO.
That's our coach!

Like I said I prefer the Rams in california even though I live in the midwest.

But the Rams success is McVay married with Goff.....

Doesn't matter if they played on the moon they'd be good.

I have to admit I expected them to be improved but not this good. Also I was impressed with how loud the Ram fans were during this last game, L.A. fans starting to show up and take their stadium back.

Saw something that the Rams Instagram gained 10,000 followers after Monday night. I also made the comment that was kind of laughed at but it's an honest question and I'm curious if we'd ever see an answer but how many Pals were sold this week after Monday's game. It's the truth that winning will change everything, but winning with that kind of exciting offense magnifies it a lot.

The Rams seem like a dream right now. I hope nobody goes and wakes us all up!

As one who enjoys Pac-12 football and a die-hard Ram fan, I recall seeing Goff many times at CAL. He did not play for a great program but there was something about him that I liked and that was his ability to succeed in the RED ZONE and his prowess to find receivers in tight widows. I thought that the Rams made a great choice to trade all those draft picks to get him (Mortgaging the Future). I give Jeff Fisher some credit for choosing him over Wentz but he didn't know how to coach him. JF was not a very good coach at all but some of our best players were drafted during his tenure: Gurley and Aaron Donald, most notably. Now I know that Demoff and Snead played major roles as well, but give JF a bit of credit, but yes he was a lousy HC.
Finally, if the Rams play the Saints in the playoffs, who wins? Does it depend on where the game is played? What say, board members?

Well, health matters. If Talib is healthy, I think on any typical day the Rams win. It's the NFL, things happen - but I think a healthy Rams team is better than the Saints or any other NFL team. Especially if Ebu, Everett, and Reynolds keep playing well.

If our defense starts playing better we can win it all, God willing we stay healthy.

And if the playoff crowds are similar to Monday night we will be very tough to beat at home. We need to finish 15-1 because who knows if the Saints will lose another game.

Still say the Panthers will beat the Aints once this season, and as long as we don't sh!t the bed vs. da Bears we should hold court w/ home field advantage

Who can blame anyone for not being interested two years ago? Not only were they losing but they were extremely boring to watch. Too many other entertainment options in LA to watch a boring team that cannot win.

Now we have an exciting brand of football and we are winning. Best game in town. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?
