In a do-over, would you trade for Watkins?

  • Yep, Watkins is a stud and we’re now set at WR for years.

  • Nope, he’s underwhelmed and I would prefer Gaines plus the ‘18 2nd rounder.

Check out his 2017 stats with one game to go. [www.espn.com]

Bear in mind that Watkins is now playing in McVay’s “spread the ball around O”. Could we have somehow gotten those 593 yards on 39 catches via some other combination of players on this roster? The 8 TD’s were great, though.

We gave up our ‘18 second rounder plus Gaines to acquire Watkins. Gaines would be handy right now and that 2nd next year could be used in so many positive ways. Sooooo many.

Sooooo...

Was it worth it to you?

Honestly, in this hypothetical I would pass on Watkins and keep Gaines and the 2nd. There, I said it.

Only if we resign him I think those numbers at least yardage wise is double next year. And off course what he does in the playoffs. As of right now I voted yes

I voted yes..... I think any player we keep and goes though the whole off season program and camp again in the second year in the system, will improve greatly. .... if we resign Watkins... I bet he explodes next year...just a feeling....I believe Goff Woods Watkins and Kupp explode for a huge 2018.

Go Rams........ ;)

I think Watkins took pressure off of the other receivers and off of Goff, allowing development that might not have occurred without him. Even if he leaves, I think that Goff and Kupp will be better next season for having had the extra space to develop.

Remember the Rams also got back a 6th rounder, and may pick up a 2019 3rd rounder if he leaves.

I would do the trade over, though I will miss the 2nd rounder of course.

And of course, do the Rams win the division without him?

This again.

The fact that you’re basing your argument on stats only proves you don’t see Watkins’ true value to the team. I don’t know how many times we have to remind people to look at the film and see how he opens up the field for everyone else. We are not in the playoffs without him.

Yes yes yes. Having him gave us the threat that opened up the offense.

Watkins, by his very presence either scares the hell out of the defense because they know they have to cover him over and under in a zone or man-to-man.

That leaves single coverage on somebody, probably, most of the time, the guy who catches the ball.

Great Trade, Watkins made Woods & Kupp viable without Watkins the others would not have been as successful.

THIS....It cannot be overlooked about just having him draw #1 CB's on every play helped Kupp and Woods. His attitude was great and we definitely should sign him up!

Would make that trade all day, any day, especially Sunday. And I'm a MIzzou fan who loves Gaines.

Yes no question, without hesitation, every day of the week and twice on Sundays and any other phrase you think can fit. He's been good and he's helped open up the passing game with the threat he provides. Some might say not having Gaines on the CB depth chart cost us a game or two but not having Watkins similarly would have hurt us in several games.

It's a no brainer.

Resigning Sammy would make it a great deal.

Defenses had to account for Sammy as much or more than Woods and Kupp. His red zone TDs have been a needed scoring avenue for a team that has had some trouble getting TDs near the goal line. Hope he gets resigned as I think McVay will find better ways to use him. He will have a year to learn when he is the hot WR and Goff's tendencies.

Not a total waste if he isn't resigned as stated that the Rams get a 6th rounder and a comp pick. Worth the risk. Would have been interesting if they had done a trade and sign deal.

Wouldn't be the highest scoring team in football without Watkins. Multiplicity of weapons has made life much easier for Goff and McVay.

Modest catches and yards, but no Ram WR had caught eight TD passes in a season since Torry Holt in 2006.
