Gregg Williams, suspended indefinitely by the NFL for his role in the New Orleans Saints' "bounty" program, is being hailed for his work in helping out a community hard-hit by a tornado.

Scott Lyon told SN-TV in Wichita, Kan., that Williams happened to be in town Saturday night and spent about 30 to 45 minutes "chain sawing" and "cutting branches" before leaving to catch a flight to St. Louis.

"He's a really nice guy," Lyon said. "He went out and helped in a community he doesn't live in. He just wanted to help us.

"He was getting his hands pretty dirty."

A tornado swept through south Wichita on Saturday, causing significant damage but apparently no major injuries.

Williams happened to be in Wichita over the weekend helping a long-time friend, Duke Naipohn, build a cabin in the Wichita area, Naipohn told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora on Tuesday. When the tornado struck, Williams suggested they go through the area with the Bobcat (a compact tractor), chainsaws and other building materials they had to help dig people out.

Naipohn said he house was spared in the storm.

They had helped a half dozen or so people by the time they got to Lyon. Lyon was the only person that day to recognize him, Naipohn told La Canfora.

[hil]It was in no way a publicity stunt or anything of that nature, according to Naipohn. Williams' flight home was cancelled due to the storms, so he and two friends tried to help others.[/hil]

Apparently, Williams is actually a pretty nice guy when you get him away from football. It doesn't excuse what he did, but I don't think that this was about rebuilding his image at all. Williams is a guy who gives back to the community.

C'mon... you have to admit. This story is going to have the air of "cleaning up his image." I know he's been a give-back kinda guy all along, but these kinds of stories are going to serve to strengthen his image in light of what's recently transpired. And the more of these that come out, the better for him (in the public's eye). Of course there will always be the mouth-breathers who say, "So what! He's still a scumbag!", but that's a strict minority.
