Few teams I saw (going back to the 60 rams) collapsed a pocket consistently as much as the 91 eagles. With Reggie white, Jerome brown and Clyde Simmons, they had a defensive line similar to what we will have. Everyone could not be double teamed. All pros on the vicious line and all pros in the backfield. They were first in just about every category and in some people’s analysis, the best defense in the past 30 years.

Did the 91 Eagles have a top flight defensive backfield? I see the Rams DBs as another factor in this defense, that may buy the d-line more time to do what they do.

Pretty sure that was the Bud Carson era who ran a 4-3. I guess I see the comparison with 2 stud on the Dline, but Philly also has a stud LB in Seth Joyner back then too. Not really seeing a comparison other than they should be really good.
Can’t think of a defense that was really good, or great even where you didn’t think of a LB as one of the key players. Hopefully the Rams will have one too, we just don’t know who it is yet

Defensive line compared to those eagles, secondary compared to the no fly zone Broncos. .

This defense could rule the NFL for a few years

I have a hard time comparing the Rams 3-4 to the great Eagles 4-3 other great 4-3 defenses. Don't get me wrong I'm excited about Donald, Suh and Brockers together on the front line. I want to see them play together and see the run stopping and pass rush before I rate them up with the best of all time. Brockers has a career sack total of 19 in six seasons. He had a good year moving over to the 5 technique DE. In 2017 he had 55 total tackles with 16 coming from assisted tackles with 4.5 Sacks. He is more of a run stopper so we will see how he improves with a year's experience and the addition of Suh. We know Donald can do it all but, he does get out of position at times with his aggressive upfield style. Suh has commanded double teams his entire career just like Donald and can be a complete disruptor on the defensive line. What's lacking is the Clyde Simmons or Jack Youngblood edge rusher. The Rams will use Dom Easley (6.5 career sacks) as a fourth down lineman at times. He is an undersized DT with a quick first step that is best used as a part timer. He will be a great addition coming back from injury but, he is not an edge rusher. The Rams will have options to move these pieces around to create favorable matchups and we could see Donald/Suh on the ends a lot. The Rams have young talent in Ekuban and Longacre on the edges but they haven't been starters and both have question marks. There still is the draft and maybe a free agent can still be signed. I'm excited but, want to wait to see the final product in action.

Again tempered enthusiasm for the fact of first of all (can't stand when people say first and foremost) health, getting through OTA's, training camp and preseason keeping everybody healthy is always a task and they have to mesh together as well. Also, it appears that Cory Littleton is going to be one of the inside backers and will be asked to do, what Alec Ogletree did and although @jrry32 communicated that he has concerns with Littleton in coverage, but my concerns have to do with teams running downhill at him.

Littleton in college more of an OLB, who was very good as an edge rusher, moving inside will be a challenge and IMO, the Rams will have to find somebody to take his place on special teams and that in itself could hamper the over success of the special team unit. I expect the Rams to draft a couple of linebackers that will factor into the equitation as well, but do I find myself feeling that Bryce Hager is actually an option?

Overall the defense should be special, but after watching the Rams playing the Saints and on how Alvin Kamara abused the defense I will always be concerned because as good as Wade Phillips defenses have been, they are always susceptible against the run and until I see that shutdown next year, I will always be somewhat concerned.

A little bit dirty too. Those Eagles teams got in their share of "echo of the whistle" hits.

I believe I remember Eric Allen....and Dirty Waters.....let me check...

They were pretty solid....top 10 defense all time...

White & Brown...two of the best DT's to ever play together....White WAS better than AD....bigger version...just as fast...probably stronger....Brown was no joke either.

If Suh was younger...or is still playing at his prime...they could be close....those Eagles had a couple of superb LB's too..

Just one LB...of note...Seth Joyner...

Great points about their ages. Hope Suh hasn't declined at age 31. He doesn't seem to have.

With the exceptional d-line and backfield, you'd think they'd feed of each other and be really formidable. Pass rush helps the Dbs and lock down coverage in turn helps the line. Obviously 4 linebackers are almost 40% of the defense, but they seem like they're going to have a diminished role in this defense.

It will be interesting to see how the Rams shake out defensively at seasons end. Will they fall flat, be good, be great, or top 10 ten all-time great. Sure feels like all-time great could be possible.

I miss this kind of football. Back when a player can literally knock the snot out of you. These days, non-stop penalties for too low, too high or too hard.

I'd love to see the Rams find another London Fletcher. A good run defending linebacker is a big need. I don't think Littleton will be that level of a thumper.
