How did John Kelly look?

I was driving from Pismo Beach to Redding (on the way home to Oregon) during the game. How did Kelly look? If Gurley is 95%, along with CJ Anderson being signed, I see our chances much better in the playoffs. If Kelly looked good that will make me even happier.

Kelly looked real good. He has fresh legs and is running hard. Consistently carries tacklers for an extra 3-4 yards when he gets some room. He didn’t get a lot of running room in this game however.

He also showed the ability to catch the ball well and pickup the blitz.

I can see Kelly taking over for Malcom Brown next year if we don’t sign CJ.

I can't see him taking over for M.B. He needs space to run and looks to be more of a speed/slasher type. I am not as impressed as many here seem to be. He is a big drop off from Gurley and CJ. I don't see him breaking many tackles.

When you look around at other teams you can see a lot of good running backs found in later rounds. Seattle has two. I think a more physical plunder is better suited for a backup role. Someone who comes in fresh and punishes the Dline, helping to further wear them down. Someone like Brown.

He shows some flashes and then get manhandled on other plays. I still have faith in him.

I think Kelly will get another chance to develop next year with either Brown or Anderson being the backup to Gurley. Personally, I believe it should be Anderson.

I think the problem is when John Kelly is in, the defense smells run.

He has great balance and wiggle. I think if he becomes good in pass pro he could be a keeper.
There are some dogs in that 49er D line.

This is true. We put Kelly in only when we were calling three run plays in a row no matter what. It's hard to succeed when the defense already knows what you're doing two series from now.

I'm in the John Kelly is a keeper group. I think he only needs more touches and we'll see just how valuable he is. I agree. Next year the depth chart that would be the best to have is Gurley, CJ, Brown/Kelly or Kelly/Brown

Kelly is a great runner but unfortunately he is only given limited attempts and he has run a lot with the 2nd string crew in games. In a backup situation I don’t see why he couldn’t get the job done.

Kelly did well in the situation. He moves quickly finding holes while exploding through the line.

He is a different kind of runner than Gurley and Brown. He should get big runs with the starters.

The problem being Malcom Browns health after the injury. Next season is a long way away I hope.
Will Kelly even be on the 46 game day roster ?

Solid depth back. Don't think the Rams trust him to carry the load though, which is why we have CJ.

Looked great, training camp at the RB position is going to be competitive during the offseason. Shame we didn't use him early in the season, would've been nice to see him and Brown get reps if the Gurley injury was disclosed to the public earlier

Kelly is a rookie. While he showed some real skills in the preseason the Rams didn't feel he was ready to be RB#2. With another year of experience, I believe Kelly will get another legitimate another shot next year to be RB#2. It will be interesting to see how the Rams utilize Gurley and Anderson in the playoffs. It may be time to consider a long term 2-RB attack (like NO or SEA).
