When long snapper Jake McQuaide signed a four-year contract extension at the start of July, he became only the third Rams player under contract through the 2017 season.
Which raised the thought: When do the other Rams’ players contracts expire? As part of his salary cap management, executive vice president Kevin Demoff tries to avoid having too many core players’ contracts expire in any one year.
After 2013, for example, the only sure starters whose contracts expire are linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar and offensive tackle Rodger Saffold. (Safety Darian Stewart, and either Chris Williams or Shelley Smith at left guard, could end up starting as well.
The bulk of the 91 players under contract (which includes two players on injured reserve) have deals that expire after the 2014 and 2015 seasons. However, it’s worth noting that 27 of the 43 players whose contracts expire after 2015 are undrafted rookies who all signed three-year deals this spring. Obviously, most of those players will not make the final 53-man roster.
