Here’s an idea for improving the XFL extra-point procedure

The XFL’s overtime protocol, which will be awesome if/when it’s ever used, was based on a PFT idea. So here’s a new PFT idea for making the XFL’s creative approach to the extra point even more compelling.

Currently, the team that scored a touchdown must choose whether to pursue one, two, or three points. For one, the ball is placed at the two. For two, the ball is placed at the five. For three, the ball is placed at the 10.

So the decision is made before the snap, just like it is in the NFL when it comes to going for one or going for two.

How about an approach that defers the decision until after the snap? Put the ball at the 15. If the offense gets to the 10, the team gets a point. If the offense gets to the five, the team gets two points. If the offense puts the ball in the end zone, three points.

It would be the first time at any level of football that the point(s) after a touchdown become flexible, the subject of a pre-snap guessing game and a post-snap guessing game. The score of the game would add to the intrigue, and it possibly would prompt an offense to feign that it’s focusing on earning, for example, one point in the hopes of catching the defense napping and scoring three.

Above all else, the change would infuse a new layer of uncertainty — and thus excitement — into a fairly routine process. And it could make people more inclined to tune in, and to stay tuned in.

I also don’t know how I feel that 15yds is worth 3 points... when driving the entire length of the field for a TD is only worth 6.

But, I see the appeal having the ability to catch up earning 9pts for a TD. Might be a way of keeping games within reach.

how about just kicking the darned extra point so the kickers can be spotlighted for NFL teams who may need to bring a kicker in to camp.
Kick from the 15 for 1 point, kick from the 30 for 2 points, kick from the 40 for 3 points

As for the OP- I just don't see earning a point by merely gaining yardage being a positive thing, however I do see the game slowing down because of all the reviews needed on the spot of the ball at the 10 & 5 yard lines

I like your idea. I'd want the distance moved back a little more though. Maybe end where the 3 pointer is a 50 yarder.

Extra points and kickoffs are so dull these days in the NFL. I like what the XFL has done with both of them.

This is an awesome idea! Russolino would get 3 for the Battlehawks every time!

Y'all have some really damn strong opinions about this stuff. I mean, it's almost like any change to anything at all is an abomination. FFS, it's the XFL and a strategic device to allow point scoring. How it happens only matters in as much as it serves the purpose the game is trying to achieve. Gaining points based off only gaining yards? Gaining yards is how you get in the endzone on the 2 point attempt. They aren't teleporting in there. "Reaching the endzone" is an arbitrarily set goal. They could set up that exact same situation anywhere on the field.

Being so attached to game models limited by tradition stifles the creativity it takes to add layers of exciting strategic complexity to the game.

Also, it's the XFL! Who gives a shit how they mess up their game if it's a mistake?
