Twenty Hall of Famers for 2020.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced it could induct a one-time only class of 20 members next year to further commemorate the NFL's 100th anniversary. The class will include five modern era players, 10 senior era players, three contributors and two coaches.

The decision was approved by the Hall's Board of Trustees during its annual meeting Friday.

The next decisions will be announced in September as a large list of nominees in each category will be revealed. Modern era players include those whose careers ended within the past 25 seasons, while senior era players are those who have been retired for more than 25 years. Semifinalists will be chosen later in the fall and finalists will be announced in January.

A bigger class benefits the senior era most, and could be a notable development for wide receiver Sterling Sharpe and NFL All-Decade honorees like running back Roger Craig, offensive linemen Joe Jacoby, Jimbo Covert, Al Wistert, Bruno Banducci and Ox Emerson, receivers LaVern Dilweg and Drew Pearson, defensive end L.C. Greenwood, cornerback Lester Hayes and safety Cliff Harris.

The eight members of the 2019 class -- cornerback Champ Bailey, contributor Pat Bowlen, contributor Gil Brandt, tight end Tony Gonzalez, cornerback Ty Law, center Kevin Mawae, safety Ed Reed, and safety Johnny Robinson -- receive their gold jackets Friday and will be enshrined Saturday.

So what do you guys think?

Does having more inductees of 20 increase the chances Holt and Bruce get in?

only 5 modern players still...

I don't really see the need for this idea. They already have a senior committee vote every year to recognize players who fell through the cracks.

Even if this is necessary, they shouldn't be voting in the additional 15 candidates as a group. They should be evaluated on an individual basis like everyone else.

Yes, and this feels like a watering down of the candidates in a way. Sure, we want our guys in like Roman Gabriel, Nolan Cromwell, Isaac Bruce. Torry Holt, and some say SJAX...The common question of whether the story of the NFL can be told without a certain player, and if it can't, dude should be in the HOF. I would say that Roman Gabriel is such a player. Nolan Cromwell, although a favorite of mine, probably is just one of the very good, and not great (so no).

Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt both are integral to the 1999 GSOT, and their whole career reflects their greatness, and therefore should definitely be in the Hall. SJAX gave his heart and soul to the Rams, but he belongs to the very good, and not great, category, so no.

Fans of other teams might say no, all of these guys don't deserve to be "in," by some criteria they hold dear, and we might look at their favored players and say "WTF?" 20 guys in all at once, might relieve the pressure of some position groups, like WR, but only if they increase the amount of less than 25 year players, inducted. JMO.

Gabe is so overdue to be recognized....

100% agreed....#18 was special, although in fairness, I did not get to see him play much or fully recall, but he was a big QB, that could also move and George Allen turned down Ralph Wilson's offer of O.J. Simpson for Garbriel in January of 1970.

Will always wonder, what would have happened if the Rams kept Gabiel over Hadl and dealt Hadl to Philadelphia for Harold Jackson back in 73, instead of Gabriel, but Roman wanted no part of competing for the starting QB spot and forced the Rams to trade him. Would love to see Roman get it, watered down or not!

Yeah, I think RG was battling knee and shoulder injuries around that time, which is understandable considering the fearless way he played.

That's correct as Gabriel missed several games in 72 and the best the Rams had behind him was Pete Beathard (who they dealt to Kansas City) and Rosenbloom wanted no part of the lack of depth in 1973, so they traded for John Hadl and wanted him and Garbriel to battle it out, but Gabriel requested a trade and the Rams accomadated him trading him to the Eagles for Harold Jackson and signing QB James Harris from the Bills to backup John Hadl.

It's probably needed to help them get through a WR group that has a lot of great candidates. Ike & Holt for example are slam dunk future gold jacket wearers, the fact neither are in yet is a travesty.

Can't wait to see Ike get in so everyone can witness what a great WR and even better person looks like accepting that jacket. Still disgusted by the Terrel Owens BS.

Owens fully deserved to be in. The "bs" was that he wasn't first ballot.

He did deserve to be in. But the WR position is backed up and everyone knew it. He got in and acted like his punk self, which was the BS.

I disagree, footballs a team sport. TO was a terrible teammate and he shouldn’t be glorified.
Then to look at voters like it was their fault (which was his attitude towards everyone his whole career) for not being a first ballot & not attending Is BS. there’s plenty of other players that had a positive impact on the league that are not in that deserved to be in before him.

Wow didn’t know that. So with that being said do you think Roman is worthy of a HOF induction?

Will 2020 centennial class help former Rams get into Hall of Fame?
gettyimages-72525656.jpg

By: Cameron DaSilva | 16 hours ago

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced on Friday that the class of inductees for 2020 will increase from eight to up to 20. The special centennial class is in celebration of the NFL’s 100th anniversary, giving players, contributors and coaches who have waited quite a while a better chance to get inducted.

The class will include five modern-era players, 10 seniors, three contributors and two coaches. This is big news for the senior candidates – players who retired more than 25 years ago – but it could also help a few former Rams.

Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Dick Vermeil and Henry Ellard have been on the ballot for a long time now and all have a case to make the Hall of Fame one day. Bruce has come the closest, being named a finalist three times. Holt has been there with him as a semifinalist five times, while Vermeil and Ellard have never made it to the semifinalist cut.

Could the expanded class in 2020 help any of these former Rams finally get into Canton? It’ll definitely improve the chances of both Vermeil and Ellard, given the increased number of guaranteed spots for coaches and senior candidates. Vermeil will be competing against the likes of Bill Cowher, Jimmy Johnson and others. In any other year, he’d have very little chance to be inducted, but with two spots reserved for coaches, his odds are much improved.

Unfortunately for Ellard, he doesn’t make the cut as a senior candidate because his last NFL season was in 1998. Had he been retired for at least 25 years, he’d have a great chance to get into Canton with his 814 career receptions, 13,777 yards and 65 touchdowns. He ranks 15th in NFL history in yards receiving and 32nd in receptions, so Ellard has a case to make.

Then there’s Bruce and Holt, who have the best chance of any former Rams players or coaches. Bruce has come so close the past three years, and his numbers are absolutely deserving of being in the Hall of Fame. His 1,024 receptions rank 13th in NFL history, his 15,208 yards are fifth and his 91 touchdowns rank 12th. It’s hard to imagine a player with those numbers not getting in.

Absolutely....Roman was amazing and under George Allen Gabe won many football games, however, could not win one in post season....Different back then, it was tough to make the playoffs and under George Allen the Rams made the playoffs in 1967 and lost to Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers (Super Bowl Winners) then in 1969 to the Vikings.

Roman’s numbers are not comparable to today’s arcade-like passing numbers, but he was a force during that era. He’s also a Mexican-American, which I don't remember that many great ones from back in the day (in fact, I can’t remember even one besides him). Can the story of the LA Rams in the George Allen era be told, without him?

No,it can’t.

I don't think that is correct.... Roman is a son of a.Filipino immigrant who came to the U.S. in 1925

I could have sworn that I heard an interview with him by Jake Ellenbogan on DTR, where he said so himself?

That would actually be even more rare! But now you have me curious, because Iam almost positive that I heard him say this, because it struck me at the time I heard it.
