[wrapimg=right]http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/jenk.png?w=210[/wrapimg]As former Titans coach Jeff Fisher tries to bring the same consistency in the standings to St. Louis, he’s well on his way to replicating one of his more overlooked accomplishments in Houston and Tennessee.

Rounding up problem children.

The well-respected coach takes more than his share of chances on players with less-than-respectable character traits. It’s a Machiavellian mindset that trickled down to former Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who has had plenty of dice rolls on bad guys come up craps during his time in Detroit.

Of Fisher’s first draft class in St. Louis, half of the 10 players taken already have found trouble at the NFL level. Second-round cornerback Janoris Jenkins, a known risk who slid out of round one, was suspended by the team for one game last year. Second-round running back Isaiah Pead, who slid to third on the depth chart last season, will miss the first game of the 2013 campaign due to a suspension under the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Cornerback Trumaine Johnson, a third-round pick in 2013, was arrested for DUI in March. Per one league source, Johnson had been removed from multiple draft boards last year after being suspended from his college team due to an alleged frat-house non-food fight, and for being arrested and Tasered in October 2011 after allegedly resisting arrest.

Receiver Chris Givens, a fourth-round pick, was suspended by the team last year, and guard Rokevious Watkins, a fifth-round pick, recently received a one-game suspension under the league’s substance-abuse policy — which as with Pead implies some sort of legal violation relating to one of the substances covered by the policy.

Also, the team’s two seventh-round picks last year, while staying out of trouble in the NFL, had incidents off the field at lower levels of the sport. Linebacker Aaron Brown was accused of misdemeanor assault while at Hawaii, and running back Daryl Richardson admits that he “got into a little trouble” in high school.

It all creates a strange disconnect for which Fisher rarely is questioned. He’s a member of the league’s Competition Committee, and few in the media ever tie the propensity to pick college players of less-than-ideal character back to Fisher. In contrast, whenever the Seahawks have a guy get suspended, people presume that coach Pete Carroll has responsibility, directly or indirectly, for the situation.

G.M. Les Snead, while not believed to have final control over the roster (especially since Fisher was hired before Snead), also deserves a mention on this point. Snead came from the Falcons, where G.M. Thomas Dimitroff frowns on taking character risks. However, Snead and Fisher have been smiling at their opportunities to get talented players later than they otherwise would have been available, but for the off-field issues.

It continued this year with linebacker Alec Ogletree. Of the board in Dallas and presumably elsewhere, the Rams took him at the bottom of round one despite a suspension at Georgia and a pre-draft DUI.

Our goal isn’t to cause trouble for Fisher or Snead, both of whom we respect and like. But the reality is that they have taken plenty of chances on players with issues unrelated to football ability, and for reasons neither known nor apparent the dynamic rarely has been mentioned, or even noticed, by the media.

One thing about building a team is collecting players that fit your culture.

I too, at times, worry about the culture Fisher is building.

Who didn't get in trouble in high school? That's stupid, everyone does. Jenkins and Givens stayed out a little late, bfd..... Tru made the biggest mistake in my eyes and he seems to have learned from it. The rest are non issues as long as they don't do it again.

Nobody is perfect, young guys do stupid things, once in the army I got plastered, walked drunk across post and passed out in a gas station parking lot after drunk dialing my Commode..... That didn't affect my abilities as a soldier, that was just being a dumb 18 year old getting ready to go to war.

I'm not worried about any of these guys in the long run, the leadership on this team is too solid.

Two words: Yellow Journalism This is a Chicken Shit article by Florio, and he knows better.

We've created a culture where excuses are made, favors granted, and checks turned the other way for up-and-coming athletes throughout their childhood development. Then, while they are still in their 20's we throw $Millions at them, don't adequately help protect them from family hawks, the community, and business sharks, Then sports journalists, simply looking for their next headline, chime-in from some false-righteousness and condemn the kids, or the coaches (hopefully) trying to teach them (at least I hope Fisher is) how to be 'responsible' Men.

Anyway, these kids are not the problem.

BS stuff if you ask me, SA automatic 4 game suspension

and exonerated

Again on Rams not league

Kid stuff stuff, find something of interest to write about
this has the flavor of yellow journalism

Re: Half of Rams’ 10-man 2012 draft class has gotten in trou

I remember Vermeil letting Phillips play on Sunday after Phillips stayed out all night the night before. Phillips on the side line puking.

Maybe it's good that Fisher shows some discipline when "He" deems it necessary.

There are also different levels of infractions.
Team infractions are the least to me. I don't care that they broke a team rule. That's between them and their employer.
Then you have these one game suspensions that nobody knows what they are for.
Then you have these DWI fines. I don't care about those either. I know many that have a DWI. I may have one myself, but I'm not telling.
Then you have PED 4 game suspensions. Didn't Pettis have that and was welcomed back with open arms. Some people actually are very fond of him. I don't care about those either.
Then you have the car thief and Bank robber type. When it comes to those, I ask, is he on my fantasy team? If not, he should be cut. If I have him, hey, things happen.

The thing is, I look at football just like any other job/business. If you wouldn't be barred from keeping your job or ever working in your field again for what ever crime these players are doing, then they should be able to continue their careers when they rectify the problem.

To make my hogwash more simple to read. I don't care what they do off the field. That is between them and the Law.

The only "trouble" I care about is Trumaine's issue with the law...that has since been resolved. Don't care about Rok's or Isaiah's suspensions after what Fisher said. And Jenks/Givens were suspended for missing a team meeting and breaking curfew as far as I know. Most teams wouldn't have even suspended two starters for that...but with their pasts, I'm sure Fisher was trying to show them that he would bring the hammer down on them if they screwed up...and it seemed to work.

So let me get this straight: the writer's blaming Richardson for getting into a "little trouble in high school"? Don't tell me that he's as pure as the driven snow; that pompous windbag probably got into trouble in high school as well. And going back to college to find problems on a guy who was released in his rookie season just reeks of an agenda on his part. What's he going to do next? Find some negative reports on Quick, Brockers, and Zuerlein in middle school or some shit like that? Because it wouldn't surprise me at this point.

How this talentless hack got a job when there are truly talented writers out there that would love to have a job like his, I will never know.

Sheesh, who didn't cause trouble in HS? I think the only real difference is a lot of us just never got caught.

Kinda the same thing with DWI. Just about everyone is guilty of it but not everyone gets caught.

"That number has to be pretty high. I'll say ... 69% of the people who ever drank, have driven."

sure..give any 23 year old kid millions of dollars, whether he is in the NFL or not, and see if he remains a saint !!!

It's offseason. Florio, along with many other football writers, simply have to produce an NFL article a week. Some tend to stretch the boundaries of journalism, making news out of nothing. Florio is guilty of this in this article
