Don't try and eat very near the dome - take a taxi and expand your radius by 10 miles and you will get much better food.

High end:

The crossing
Sydney street cafe
Cardwells at Frontenac

But also try

White Castle
Yen Ching
Crown Candy Kitchen
blueberry Hill
Woofies

And take a cab to the Hill and just pick a random Italian restraunt so you can say you went to the hill

The "hill" area is fantastic if you like italian and not too far but you will have to cab it. There is a "Charlie Gito's" location downtown though (just a few blocks from the stadium). It's a famous italian establishment with a lot of photos of celeberties on the walls such as Tommy Lasorda who frequent the place. Charlie makes lasagna to die for. Link below:

You could head down to the landing by the arch which is walkable (or short cab ride). There are a number of establishments there including a couple of nice brew pubs and a lot of action. See the original bridge accross the mississippi while down there too. If you want you can jump on a metro there and go accross the river to the casino on the Illinois side.

Mike Shannon's is a nice place and I believe there is still a Dierdorf & Hart's downtown still if you want a upscale dinner (steaks, etc).

There is also ballpark village which is adjacent to Busch Stadium. Theres a number of bars, clubs, and eateries in there. The ratio of women to men at the clubs in the evening is very appealing there...wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Theres also Union Station which you can take a short metro ride to (or possibly walk but its several blocks) where you'll find a Hard Rock and a Landry's seafood resturant and others including lunch type joints (ocharley's, etc). I went there the other day and wow was it dead though. I wonder if ballpark village is hurting them that much? It's worth seeing as a landmark anyway if you have the time.

The Loop area is another one that has some cool places to eat including Fitz Rootbeer and Blueberry Hill but again you'll have to either cab it or take the metro.

The Schlafly Tap Room is one of my all time favorite places. Great beer made on premises and unique food selections. You will probably have to cab it but its not that far. It's pretty close to union station. Link below:

The Hill is great...but since you are from Europe I have to ask if you have been to Italy for authentic Italian food?

Here is what I'd suggest.
Breakfast: Rooster
Lunch: Crown Candy or Pappy's/Bogarts BBQ
Dinner: 1111 Mississippi or Scape
Desert: Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, of course.

I like the Schlafly suggestion as well. Get a pretty good reasonably priced meal and some good local beers.

If Rooster is the crepe place I ate at while I was in STL, then I back that endorsement 100%.

It is...it's very good and convenient. My last trip there I got their version of a slinger and was extremely impressed.

If you want a beer inside the dome make sure to take your passport rather than driver's licence, I tried using my driver's licence and the conversation went as below:

Cashier: Do you have ID.
Me: Yes here you go.
Cashier: I'm sorry I can't accept that I have no idea what a UK driver's license looks like
Me: It looks like that.
Cashier: Can you move along please sir.

Definitely Crown Candy if you can go

If you can get to the Hill there's many great places to eat, also near the Hill is O'Connell's Pub which is also excellent. There are many great restaurants in Clayton, but at that point you're starting to get pretty far from the dome

And no trip to St. Louis would be complete without going to Ted Drewes for some frozen custard-though I realize it might be pretty cold and you may not want to eat ice cream

PS: while you're down there try some toasted ravioli...they're great and something you can only get in St. Louis

Disregard the White Castle suggestion....unless you eat it while already sitting on a toilet.

It's a good suggestion for a midnight had too many beers but need to eat. Otherwise, I would agree

I would also agree with pappy's or "the hill". If you are looking for something quick Guz's Pretzels is always a good choice (next to the AB brewery)
