I don't understand why people can't appreciate each story for what it is. The books are one telling of the story. The show is another. I'm reading book five now. I'm enjoying both very much.

I would say at this point it is Stannis as well. Of all of the people he seems to be the most fair. He may be harsh, but he follows the rule of law. The scene with his daughter showed that he does have compassion even though he hides it deep down. I think this season has only made him more like able.

Gulp...well, not so much now...

I have intentionally NOT read the books yet, but damn that was totally unwarranted way to fuck the Stannis character in S05E09! Un-fucking-believable!!! He went from a guy that at least had honor above the others fighting for the Iron Throne - at least after Rob Stark was offed - but Jesus Christ crucified, burning your own daughter because a slut-witch told you to?!?!?!?! I kept thinking that in that scene, Stannis (or his wife) was going to stop it or throw Melisandre onto the pyre instead, but no....instead we got to hear a reproduction of the Salem Witch trials!

This season has been really up and down with some twisted shit thrown in for what seems to be shock value and abusing the audience's emotions...its almost like the GoT show runners have watched too much Walking Dead and decided that the only way to do "serious" TV now is to kill off people from the cast seemingly at random or to brutalize the audience to add "heft" to the story...

On the other hand, the show and the print story are already divergent enough to assume that Martin has no intention of actually finishing the remaining 2 books in anything close to the time necessary to have the TV show follow the books any more. I would assume at this point that the show writers are privy to Martin's intentions, but given the ponderous rate at which he writes, I may be well into my 60's before (or if) he finishes the story. I may never read the books (I was always pissed at Stephen King for the Dark Tower series taking so long) and have no intention of even starting them in earnest unless the whole story is available

Yeah it is crazy how quick things can change lol. I am reading the fifth book now so I don't know how this will play out. At this point it seems that Stannis feels like he has no choice but to do this. He has seen what he thinks has worked before when Robb Stark, Joffrey, and Renly died. After what happened at the beginning of the episode I guess he just felt like he has nothing left to do. At this point I can see his army just turning on him and deserting or even killing him after what happened. They're all freezing and starving and at some point they're going to turn on him, and quickly. I saw a couple weeks ago that Martin said he plans on releasing his sixth book before the sixth season airs. Hopefully that stays true.

Yeah I kind of had to turn it off when Shireen was being killed. It was the high pitched screaming that made me do it tho, not the fact that Stannis had her killed. I kind of saw that coming when he exchanged glances with Melisandre and then sent Davos away. Davos knew what was going on, but was in no position to stop it I guess.

Danerys taking off on the dragons back was good way to end the season IMO and we still have another episode, but I think the next episode will be other story lines wrapping up, since that one seems to have ended for the season.

I pretty well avoid this thread because some like shows to be true with books and I don't give a damn and don't wanna hear it. But last nights episode needs talked about. That was totally fucked up. That poor little girl. I hope him and his whole fucking army die of a bad case of the razor dicks.

I didn't like the burning at the stake scene at all. Plenty of people I like have died in this series and that's what has set it apart for me but that was a step too far. I don't see how he can possibly expect his army to rally around him having seen him kill his own daughter.

Even the best Steven King movie doesn't compare with the book. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy both individually is what I'm trying to say.
Except "the Natural" that's one book I actually enjoyed LESS than the movie. Only because it ended differently

I think it all depends. There are times that the book is better and times it isn't. And times it's just right.

I thought "Silence of the Lambs" was very faithful to the book and could not have been done better.

I was actually hoping that there would have been some changes to "No Country for Old Men". That's a case where I think they followed the book too closely. The book itself was fine but there is one scene the book did not detail that I felt the film just had to--and the filmmakers chose to follow the novel--and anyone who has read it will easily guess what I'm talking about.

And just read the original plot of "Jaws" to see the changes that were made. It would have felt like a very different film had they remained true to the novel.

As for something as epic as "Game of Thrones"---unless the showrunners and HBO were willing to dedicate 20 years or so to the production, I don't know how they would be able to follow the books exactly as written. The best they can do is follow in spirit and, assuming that the show's producers indeed have information that we don't--I can only expect they're doing the best they can.

I haven't read the books. I'm just enjoying it as a television event and I do "get" when you've invested so much time into something as the readers of GoT have, you expect certain things. You feel a partial ownership of that. I get it and I feel a bit relieved I don't carry that burden.

As for the show, it isn't going to shy away from any horrible event. That's pretty clear.

As for Stannis---he's clearly done now. You can't commit such a horrible act and survive.

With two seasons to go, I suspect the Stannis storyline is nearly over.

I turned the sound down. I really don't believe any man that is honest and fair would sacrifice his own child because some whackadoo mistress of the fire told him to do it. I think in that instance I would be sacrificing Melisandra. She should be worth something to her god.
