Don't blame Jared Goff for the loss to the Seahawks. The Rams let him down.

It was hard to resist the temptation to blame quarterback Jared Goff for the Los Angeles Rams’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night.

Goff nearly threw two pick-sixes at crucial moments in the fourth quarter — only to get lucky when Seahawks defenders dropped the ball. Goff misfired in the direction of an open Cooper Kupp on a third-and-7 on the 18-yard line in the fourth quarter and the Rams settled for a field goal. But Goff was also 6-of-9 on the Rams’ final drive, and seemed poised to lead his team on an impressive pair of drives during the final three minutes.

The Rams’ penultimate offensive drive ended with an interception, which wasn’t his fault. On a third-and-10, Goff hit Gerald Everett in stride, but the tight end dropped the ball, which somehow deflected into the hands of Seahawks safety Tedric Thompson for a circus-catch interception with 2:12 left in the game.

The stat sheet shows a strike against Goff. But that misrepresents what happened. The blame falls on Everett, who was otherwise brilliant on the night (7 catches, 136 yards).

“He’s got some of the most natural hands I’ve ever been around, so that’s a fluke for him to happen,” Goff said of Everett’s drop after the game. “He was hard on himself, and he knew it might have put us in the wrong situation, but I told him, ‘We’re going to need you again. If we get a stop, we’ll get the ball right and we’re probably going to need to go right back to you.'”

And Goff was right. When the Rams defense stopped the Seahawks on the ensuing drive, Goff got the ball back to Everett on a 67-yard drive with 1:27 left on the clock. As mentioned, there was a close call on a pass that was nearly intercepted. But with a minute left on the clock, Goff fired a beauty to Everett over linebacker K.J. Wright for 28 yards. The Rams were in field goal range. It was a pinpoint pass at a crucial moment.

Yup, Goff looked clutch — at least for a few passes.

I've never seen a quarterback whose every pass is scrutinized so much. Whenever he misses a receiver or slightly off, it is always discussed. If there is a near interception it is always harped on. I watch many other NFL games each week and every QB has those misses. Every QB has some near interceptions. Every QB has a play where they throw to a receiver even though another receiver might be more open. I feel like in most instances where a play doesn't produce a positive result, Goff is always to blame regardless of if its because the defense is in his face, or just no one open whereas other QBs get the benefit of the doubt. Is he perfect? No. Is he above average quarterback? Yes.

I feel like whenever Dak misses a pass, or Wentz misses a pass or many other QBs miss a pass, it isn't as scrutinized. However, the commentary always seems to overlook these items for other QBs. I just don't think Goff will ever remove the stink of his first year and people will always look for reasons why he shouldn't have been the #1 pick or gotten the extension. Only way is for the Rams to sustain long period of success and win a title or so along the way. Even then, Goff will just be in the right system with McVay spoonfeeding him success. And if they don't, well, everyone will just blame Goff and not anything else.

Colin Cowherd was effusive in his praise of Goff this AM. Called that last drive the kind of thing you get from a Brady and Brees.

I think a large reason for this recent media spin is due to how little he gives them. Mahomes isn’t just good at football, he plays into the media. Brady, Brees, Wilson, they all play into the media in different ways. They give these guys what they want, stories, things to print. Goff on the other hand? He doesn’t give them anything. They try to ask him a question to get a story going and all he does is praise his teammates.

Media has changed all over, sports world included. It’s less about presenting facts and more about entertaining, having juicy stories. Goff doesn’t give them anything like that and they hate him for it.

No doubt. On the previous drive I was enjoying the moment rather than stressing about it, trying to find that happy place where I can appreciate our QB being thrown into a situation where he needs to get it done. That drive sputtered, but when it all came down to the final seconds he was money and I was really proud of how he played there in the clutch.

Jared's not Tom Brady yet. But he's on the path to get there IMO. He just requires what Brady has often had... A strong defense to keep his team in the game enough for the late heroics. And the way the Rams are playing right now (they're a good team not a great team) I think he is going to get a lot of opportunities for late game heroics and I expect him to make the most of them.

IMO the Super Bowl skewed our perceptions. They got there a little early. This roster still has some growing pains and not just on the OL but I think they're going to get where they want to be this year. I think this is a playoff team and by the time playoffs hit nobody will want to play us.

Goff did what he had to do in a hostile environment . Took his team down the field and took the
lead , only to have the defense choke it away . Then put them in position to win and the rest we know

I'm just happy that dirt bag Z. Ansah didn't ruin both his knees with that blatant cheap shot...

I wouldn’t go that far. I challenge you to run as fast as you can and get tripped up and as you’re trying not to hit the ground, pull yourself up higher to avoid hitting that. It doesn’t work. Everyone defended Mark Barron doing the EXACT same thing agains Big Ben a few years ago. Shit happens. That was not on purpose.

If woods gets a knee down on a perfect pass a little earlier the game is over.

If everett catches a perfectly thrown pass the game is over.

We could do this all day.

Goff leads the league in passing yards and is pretty unstoppable right now.
This with no running game.

But it’s a team game. WRs, TEs, lineman and kickers have to do their part.
