I just had a crazy thought. I know there's no chance it happens, but I thought it would be interesting to float. The Patriots are reportedly considering trading CB Malcolm Butler. They likely won't bring him back this off-season. They also need pass rushing help. We need help in our secondary. Here's my thought:
Rams Trade
OLB Robert Quinn
WR Tavon Austin
2018 Third Round Pick

Patriots Trade
CB Malcolm Butler
HB Dion Lewis
2018 Second Round Pick

Lewis replaces Lance Dunbar. Patriots get a talented gadget in Austin. Patriots get a talented pass rusher in Quinn. We get a talented cover CB in Butler. We swap picks and get the better pick because Quinn is under contract through 2019. Thoughts?

I like it. But can't see Belichick having interest in Tavon. Quinn? Yeah, he'd probably be all over that. I'd do it.

I'd like to wait a couple more games to see how quinn plays and the secondary shapes up, especially Websters injury.

Interesting trade but I think tavons contract would also have to be changed.

Amazing trade for us but Pats are the Pats because they know better than to pay/assume contracts for non-productive over-priced players.

The numbers work this year in terms of the salary cap.

I think McDaniels could be interested because of Tavon as a gadget guy.

Well, they're shipping out a CB who they demoted (and don't seem to plan to re-sign) and a HB who doesn't get PT. They're getting back a DE who still has massive pass rush potential and is signed for three years (their biggest weakness right now is the pass rush).

I don't know. Is Butler that good to give up both previous #1 picks in Quinn and Austin for him?

Something is amiss with Quinn. I realize he's adjusting to a new scheme but his motor isn't the same for some reason. Perhaps he's still hurt. Both Tavon and Quinn won't be Rams next year imo. Tavon's a possibility to stick if he agrees to a restructure.

I like it .....but I have read/heard .. you don't ever want a player that BB is willing to trade .. he trades them for a reason and rarely have they go on to success

Malcolm Butler on reduced role: I haven't been performing; no excuses

    Mike ReissESPN Staff Writer
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler has endeared himself to fans for many reasons, with his Super Bowl XLIX-saving interception atop the list. His rise from underdog to key contributor has been one of the team’s feel-good stories in recent years.

On Thursday, Butler gave fans another reason to appreciate what he’s all about.

In the midst of the toughest stretch of his career since he became a full-time starter in 2015, with him losing his starting spot for the first time in Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, Butler said there is only one place to point the finger: at himself.

His level of accountability was high.

“I haven’t been performing at the level that I should be performing at,” he said. “There’s no excuses.”

Butler’s reduced role, which came after a costly pass interference penalty in the end zone in a season-opening loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and struggles with the long ball and in the end zone in the preseason, stood out in the Patriots’ win over the Saints on Sunday.

After he played 98.8 percent of the defensive snaps in 2015, and then 96.7 percent of the defensive snaps in 2016, it was eye-opening to see Butler utilized only in the team’s three-cornerback nickel package. The Patriots opened the game with Stephon Gilmore and Eric Rowe as their top cornerbacks.

Butler said the decision wasn’t a surprise to him, and he was willing to accept any role. At the same time, he spoke with confidence that he will return to his previous higher level of play.

“I’m finding my way back, you better believe that,” he said. “Complaining or feeling sorry for myself is not going to make me perform better. I just have to keep it rolling. I’m going to get it rolling. That’s what I have to do.”

Scheduled for unrestricted free agency after the season, Butler was asked how difficult it has been to put the business side of the game aside, as well as trade rumors. He said he tries not to pay attention to trade rumors and, “This is where I play, this is where I’m happy at; just have to continue doing my thing.”

He added that he has been through more challenging times in his career than what he’s currently dealing with, saying, “If I can handle that and make it to the NFL, I can put my mind together to make it past this situation. Just have to perform better. It’s still early, but need a sense of urgency and you’ll see that."

Butler said he hasn’t been told if he’ll be back in the starting lineup for Sunday’s home game against the Houston Texans. With Gilmore and Rowe both slowed by groin injuries this week, it’s possible he will be thrust back into that familiar starting spot.

Regardless, he said his approach is the same.

“Playing like it, practicing like it. I’ll be ready,” he said. “It starts at practice.”

Exactly. Both Quinn and Butler are performing below where they have in the past. It's why a trade would make sense for both teams here.

Except Butler is in the same system he's been in, and Quinn is starting something completely new to him.

I would be ok with an Austin for Lewis package, including picks if need be.

I like it. I just don't know if New England would absorb both Austin and Quinn's contracts. If the cap was more like the NBA, I would say, how can't they. But I don't see them biting on both....maybe one or the other.......
Good analysis though.....

I'm not sure where Quinn's head is, if he's willing to buy in to his new position, then heck no, I wouldn't trade him straight up for Butler AND Lewis, if he's not happy with the change in system then yeah I'd consider moving him.

TA is a luxury type player, not ready to throw in the towel on him just yet

I say thanks but no thanks

Butler is 27 and a top CB the past couple of years. It's more than worth the risk.

Don't the Patriots have Cooks already? He seems to be kinda silent this year.
