Unfortunately that's true of any NFL team. The better you are the more leniency you get. If you're borderline or crappy, out the door you go. There are of course a few examples to the contrary but only a few.
Agreed... and the local media is saying as much (Whitehead was never gonna make the team). He was expendable... Elliott is not. That double standard is pretty normal, as you say.

It's the way they handled it... using this particular situation as justification. And, of course, the real buffoonery here is that they didn't even try to get all the facts before cutting him.

Cut on the first day of camp? If they didn't use this excuse, he'd have been cut under normal circumstances and no one would say boo.

Wasn't part of the word out of the FO was there was a pattern of behavior with him?

The missed meeting? Yeah, bad move and he was disciplined for it.

The dog incident? While really weird, it had nothing to do with the Cowgirls.

Then the false report.

Doesn't look like a whole lot there to me... certainly have seen worse... like I said, he was going to get cut anyway.

Just do it the right way, buffoons.

That's unusual most of the time a team waits until all the info is in like the league does these days.

They probably just wanted him gone.
In this scenario, which you are right! You have to wonder, what's up!?!

This was simply a PR stunt by the Cowboys that has blown up in their face. They have received a lot of bad publicity because of all the unpunished off-field antics of their players lately. They wanted to make an example of Whitehead to suggest they are tough on troublemakers and it backfired. Zeke can walk around assaulting people but apparently Jerry draws the line at (alleged) petty theft. What a joke.
I'm of the opinion, Jerry doesn't mind any publicity about the Cowboy's, Good or Bad, as long as they don't look "Stupid", this makes them look REALLY STUPID! JMHO

Jets claim Lucky Whitehead

Lucky Whitehead has found his new team.

Whitehead, the receiver recently released by the Cowboys, has been claimed on waivers by the Jets. The move makes some sense, as Whitehead is both young and cheap, two qualities the Jets are looking for in this rebuilding season: The 25-year-old Whitehead is playing for the league-minimum salary on the contract he signed as an undrafted rookie in 2015.

The Cowboys placed Whitehead on waivers yesterday after an odd situation in which police said he had been arrested for shoplifting, only to say later that they had actually arrested someone else who gave them Whitehead’s name. Dallas appeared ready to move on from Whitehead for both on-field and off-field reasons regardless of the facts of that case.

With the Jets, Whitehead will compete for a roster spot as both a receiver and a return man. He probably has a better chance of making the 53-man roster in New York than he did in Dallas, so getting waived at the start of camp — rather than at the end of the preseason — may turn out to be a lucky break for Whitehead.

Cowboys lead the league in suspensions, by a lot

In the last four years the Cowboys have had by far the most players suspended, forcing them to miss by far the most games, of any team in the NFL.

The Dallas Morning News compiled suspensions around the league and found that the Cowboys have had 15 players suspended for a total of 100 games since 2014. The Browns, with 10 suspensions totaling 54 games, and the Ravens, with nine suspensions totaling 55 games, are the closest to the Cowboys.

Dallas’s suspensions include many players they added to their roster at a time when other teams wouldn’t touch them, including Rolando McClain, Randy Gregoryand Greg Hardy. Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones hasn’t hesitated to take on player with character concerns.

The Cowboys’ suspension tally may grow soon: The NFL is deliberating on whether or not to suspend running back Ezekiel Elliott over an allegation of domestic violence, and linebacker Damien Wilson was arrested three weeks ago and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

So while the Cowboys cut Lucky Whitehead after a shoplifting arrest that turned out to be a case of mistaken identity, most of the time they’re willing to accept players who get into off-field trouble. More than any other team in the league.

League office apparently leaks details of looming Ezekiel Elliott suspension

Two years ago, someone at 345 Park Avenue leaked to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN the notion that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had destroyed his cell phone in connection with the #Deflategate investigation. Within a day of the leak, Brady was suspended four games due in part to the allegation that he’d destroyed his cell phone.

Now, it seems like someone at 345 Park Avenue has leaked to Cris Carter of FS1 the notion that Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is about to be suspended, with some eye-opening details.

Via Ryan Glasspiegel of TheBigLead.com, Carter said on FS1’s Undisputed that “in the next 48 hours I would be shocked if Zeke was not suspended.” Carter added that, “based on the information that’s going to come out, it’s going to be fairly easy to determine that something happened to this woman in her four days of being with Zeke.” (The specific allegation is that Elliott committed five acts of domestic violence in a six-day window.)

Carter described the situation as a case of “assault or domestic violence,” and Carter hinted that “when the information comes out there’s going to be some similarities” to Tom Brady’s suspension, including “information that he had been advised possibly to give up, that was destroyed.”

Carter ultimately suggested that Elliott’s banishment will be in the range of Brady’s four-game suspension. If this happens, it will contradict multiple proclamations from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones regarding the absence of any evidence of domestic violence.

That said, there’s no guarantee that Carter’s comments will be borne out by the eventual facts. He was careful to couch his terms in a way that would protect him from @OldTakesExposed, stopping short of reporting anything but merely sharing what he’s hearing.

(Then again, Smith used similar tiptoe terms with Brady, prompting a negative reaction from him to our posts on the issue and generating some of our all-time favorite drops from his daily radio show, including “Mike Florio needs to grow the hell up” and “Would you please break a damn story?”)

If what Carter is hearing is accurate, it’s likely not a coincidence that someone from the league office saw fit to prime the pump by leaking startling information about Brady’s case in 2015 and now Elliott’s case to one of the weekday morning #EmbraceDebate shows. Getting inflammatory information into the public domain now makes it less stunning when the league issues its press release.

It’s nevertheless odd that the league office would see fit to hand such sensitive information regarding crime and punishment to a player who once urged rookies to arrange for a fall guy.
