Suspended ex-Saints coordinator has work to do

The coaches and staff of the New Orleans Saints that were implicated in the bounty program have accepted their punishments while the challenges by players drags on.

Former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams received the most severe sanction, getting an indefinite suspension from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for his role masterminding the system that National Football Post columnist Matt Bowen has reported was also in place in Washington when Williams was with the Redskins.

Williams has expressed a desire to return to the NFL and Goodell has said his situation will be evaluated in the future. Goodell stopped at Chicago Bears training camp today at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., and I asked him if Williams has made any steps toward potentially being reinstated down the line.

“We haven’t been focused on it,” Goodell said. “Our staff has talked to him a couple of times. He wants to be helpful in making sure people understand that bounties aren’t part of football and that is not what he is about. He is going to be active in doing that this season.”

So, sounds like a wait and see with Williams. Keep in mind the St. Louis Rams have not replaced him as defensive coordinator. Maybe there is a chance Williams will be back in that role in 2013. Stay tuned.
