As Sunday Night Football Sports Medicine Consultant Mike Ryan recently explained on PFT Live, plenty of players have had microfracture surgery, but they choose not to advertise it, due to the stigma associated with the procedure. While the surgery and rehab have improved in recent years, one player who has had it believes the latest NFL player to get it will have a hard time recovering from it.

“He’s screwed,” Colts tackle Gosder Cherilus said of Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, via Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star. “His game is all about explosion. That’s a problem. I’m out there dancing. I’m an offensive line[man]. That’s a different ballgame. He’s screwed. I’m just being honest.”

Cherilus also echoed Ryan’s description of the rehab process as long and grueling.

“The doctor said, ‘I’d be surprised if you ever play again'” Cherilus said. “I was like, ‘My God.’ But I gave it a try. We did rehab for nine straight months. Three to five hours in the morning and then I’d come back and do some more later. Think about that.”

Before the rehab, the player has to spend plenty of time off the leg.

“You see my leg right here?” Cherilus said. “Imagine putting this on crutches for 10 weeks. You lose everything. The whole leg was dumb. I couldn’t even walk. We had to teach the leg to do everything all over again: Taking off, cutting, everything.”

So Clowney is screwed in two ways. He’ll have to work hard to get the leg back to where it was. And then he’ll have to subject the knee to the explosion that those leg muscles will create.

Well, I'm not going to say you guys are wrong about his abilities because neither of us know and if this story is close to correct, we never will. We dodged a bullet because this guy suffered/had an injury he might never come completely back from. Eventually, these pundits have to get that "once in a decade, generation, lifetime" label correct for one of the prospects. This might have been that time.

I feel bad for the Texans. They have fans just like us. Guys I'd call brothers if not for a little geography.

Yea, that was only minimally directed at you. And you're missing my point. It's not calling you out for taking joy in an injury. It's the same patience lecture I've been giving for years. It's too early to say what he is or isn't. But even if it does wreck his career, don't really think that proves anything...can't predict injuries.

Would suck if he's one of those "what if" guys in 10 years.

D'Marco Farr was saying the same thing on his radio show yesterday. It's the same injury that brought his career to an end. I would have been excited to have drafted him had Houston passed on him. It's a shame for him and the Texans, but the Rams have their own leg issues to deal with.

But maybe to some extent you can predict if someone will be at a higher risk for injury. We all know Sam's injury history from college, and we all know he's been a bit fragile as a pro. Clowney in college had bone spurs, rib injuries, a bad shoulder in summer camp and a sports hernia supposedly during pro day. So, all joking aside, it may not be all that surprising that he's had knee problems and now this as a pro. Some people could be more prone to injury.

As for joke, that was intended to be a little self-deprecating, and a little towards how people remember their hits and not their misses. Really had nothing to do with having patience with a draft pick. We as Rams fans should have a good handle on how long it may take talent to shine through.

Same here, to me there just was something off about him.

And it's not that I wouldn't have been excited to add a defensive end with his potential. To be honest, if the Texans hadn't picked him, I would have been excited if they had picked Clowney and Donald both regardless of our need on the offensive line.

My only complaint was with the media pundits insisting that we should trade up for him as they became caught up in their own hype machine.

He is just one player after all, and injuries can happen to anyone as we know well, which is something that I think general managers, or at least our own (thanks again for the RG3 trade) should consider when valuing one pick so highly.
