I've been pretty much saying all along that even if they agree to a new contract before camp, it wasn't likely to go into affect until 2019. Rams would be crazy to not take advantage of this years 5'th year option. Waiting to sign him for another season also gives us an extra year of him being a Ram. jmo.

True. A Joyner extension might be a big one. Barron maybe if they extend him. Brockers could be on the table as well.

My guess is this year is low but next year we have a ton of cap space so it'll likely be spread out in the coming years. But I'm sure he'll get one hell of a signing bonus.

or wait until 2019 to give him full compensation. I could see a scenario where Suh making more than Donald in 2018 could be a point of contention for the Donald camp - but I trust the Rams when they say this has already been accounted for. I want a highly motivated Donald in 2018.

It won't be a point of contention for AD because they have been talking with him throughout.

AD KNOWS he's going to get paid.

Now, if they'd given Suh $20M... then, he'd have every right to be upset, but they stuck to their budget (granted at the very edge of it...)

I think the main thing for AD is the guaranteed money. If we can lock him up for 4-5 years with enough guaranteed money and signing bonus, I think that might be the solution. But I'm not sure what AD is asking for. Hopefully he's not being unreasonable and asking for a Kirk Cousins contract.

He can get paid when it's time for him to get paid. The Rams are within their rights to take that 5th year option. It's not like the guy isn't making huge money from Ads and sponsors. The man is making some serious bank.

I don't know why these players are so entitled. Same with OBJ. Kid was hurt all year and acts the fool in the off-season and now is making a spectacle of himself. That's what the entitled attitude is getting us nowadays, these guys aren't Role Models anymore.

I feel like I've read things where Demoff structures contracts as "pay as you go." That's pretty consistent from what I've seen with contracts from him, I think.

What might this look like with Donald?

Pay as you go is a relatively new structure teams are starting to embrace. A player's cash and salary cap numbers are the same in each contract year because he is receiving salary guarantees instead of a signing bonus under this model. The first contract year usually consists of a fully guaranteed base salary and a roster bonus due a few days after signing. The second year in the most lucrative pay-as-you-go contracts has a fully guaranteed base and a conditionally guaranteed early roster bonus similar to the conditional salary guarantees in the signing bonus/salary guarantee structure.

There may also be conditional guarantees in the third year. Deals with this structure have higher cap numbers, particularly in the early years, because of the absence of a signing bonus. Since there isn't any signing bonus proration, teams have more cap flexibility. From later in the article it suggests that we were using a Signing bonus/salary guarantee model though along with the pay as you go.

He's not entitled. He's the best defensive player in the league and deserves to be paid like it. The rams have had him dirt cheap for 4 years. Time to pay up.
