Not so long ago — circa 2018 — Sean McVay was the toast of the NFL, a coaching wunderkind and whiz kid play-caller on his way to leading his team to the Super Bowl.

A year later, Sean McVay is trying to keep the teetering Rams from falling out of playoff contention.

That could happen if they lose to the Chicago Bears on Sunday at the Coliseum.

It’s a far different scenario than last season, when the Rams won their first eight games en route to a second consecutive NFC West title.

They enter Sunday’s game with a 5-4 record and a distant view of the first-place San Francisco 49ers and surging Seattle Seahawks in the division.

“I would be lying to say that this hasn’t been more challenging,” McVay said. “But that’s also why there’s a motivation to make sure to do right and to use this as an opportunity to try to respond in the way that you challenge your players and everybody else too.

“You want to make sure that you’re epitomizing those things as well.”

McVay, 33, was regarded as one the NFL’s most dynamic and innovative play-callers during his first two seasons.

That reputation has taken a hit.

The once high-powered offense has been middling. The unit did not score a touchdown in last week’s 17-12 defeat by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Quarterback Jared Goff committed three more turnovers. Star receiver Cooper Kupp did not catch a pass. Star running back Todd Gurley did not touch the ball in the fourth quarter.

So McVay, the celebrated genius, has not looked the part.

He anticipated that day might come.

“Sure,” he said. “It’s a humbling game.”

Rams players, however, said McVay has not changed his demeanor or approach. He has remained consistent while attempting to produce a consistently positive outcome.

“That dude is steady,” Goff said.

Said defensive lineman Aaron Donald: “Coach’s been coach. Same thing.”

More than a month has passed since McVay last paced the Coliseum sideline.

An Oct. 13 defeat by the San Francisco 49ers had extended the Rams’ losing streak to three games, putting their season on the brink of possible collapse. The Rams launched a mini-rally and beat the Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals during an extended road trip. But after the defeat by the Steelers in Pittsburgh, they return in a similarly precarious position.

And with an injury-depleted offensive line that must protect Goff from one of the NFL’s most aggressive defenses.

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth, a 14-year pro, is the only Rams lineman with more than a few games of NFL experience at his position. Rookie tackle Bobby Evans could start for the first time and match-up against Khalil Mack, the Bears’ $141-million outside linebacker who was the 2016 NFL defensive player of the year.

“You just kind of get it out of your head who’s over there,” Evans said. “You have to execute. That comes with preparation and getting your mind right.”

The Rams also will be without receiver Brandin Cooks, who will sit out a second consecutive game while recovering from concussions. Cooks absence enabled the Steelers to double-team and shut down Kupp.

“We just need to step up and make plays,” Goff said, “and it starts with me.”

Though the game is at the Coliseum, and their beloved team is 4-5, Bears fans are expected to turn out in force.

“It really carries in every away game,” Bears coach Matt Nagy said of the support, adding, “Trust me, when you have that going on, on the road, you really respect that and appreciate every bit of it.”

The influx of Bears fans might not reach the level seen when the Green Bay Packers played at the Coliseum last season, but the Rams are preparing for a significant turnout.

“If they want to bring the noise, man, we’ll handle it,” Rams linebacker Samson Ebukam said. “As long as it’s an electric atmosphere, I don’t really care.”

The Rams have gone to a non-verbal snap count at the Coliseum when opposing fans become too loud. That might happen again Sunday.

“We’re not going to be surprised,” McVay said, “but we’re hopeful that our fans show up, and excited about being back at home.”

FWIW, I still believe in Coach Sean McVay and we will get this thing turned around. Some slight adjustments to the coaching staff as I would like to see Jay Gruden added, but I'm still behind the Ramsey deal and feel very strongly that Nsimba Webster can play the Branden Cooks role in the offense of having the speed over the top, however, IMO, bigger Offensive Linemen are going to be needed moving forward and tonight I'm hoping Bobby Evans steps up.

I disagree, I believe that's in game preparation, they are not going to come out and say, he's devised a new game plan for the Bears.

I expect him to change what he's doing because he's hit a wall. The run game can't be abandoned even if it's not netting big plays. He has to keep this defense "honest" or else Goff may get killed.

This D is really, really good and really, really physical. He cannot let them just come after Goff.

I am ok with maintaining poise, but it’s not ok to keep the strategy the way it has been. You have big men up front who can plow...let them eat a little in the run game, and the pass pro will benefit!! Go Rams. Dear Santa, can you transplant a little of John Robinson’s love for running the football into Sean McVays brain?....just a little?

McVay needs to set his pride aside and add an OC that meshes with his vision next year. For this year try establishing some rhythm. it may be difficult with their patchwork OL but it was the cornerstone of their success last year.

If he does relinquish his play calling, that guy is available in Jay Gruden, not sure McVay will do that, but if he does, his type of play caller is available.

Yes we do have big men who can plow....some gaping holes for Gurley and Brown last week...should have kept it going. I watched the game again. We need to stop letting the quicker smaller defenders get the beat of us,, bring the beef!

I'll be surprised if McVay gives up play calling, his brain is just too quick and loaded with designs to forfeit such an asset, although Gruden could make for a great addition to help maintain a semblance of balance, ... if they can put Gurley on a rush count, maybe they can get McVay on a pass count. o_O Obviously there are times to pass, but giving yourself more rush options in deserving situations makes you less one-dimensional and ultimately benefits the passing game & Goff. jmo.

Fans are so fickle lol. Most HCs would have the worst offense and a 2 win record behind this line. It's a miracle we have a middling offense and winning record.

What blocking scheme does Bill Callahan run? I could see him being brought on as a new oline coach.

More of the power running scheme and I don't see Aaron Kromer being fired, I could see Callahan being added, but it might be in a different capacity. IMO, Callahan is one of the best, but so is Aaron Kromer.

I would not fault the injuries to this offense as a reason for this sickly offense. The run game has been bad since preseason. Kromer is the OC of the run game.

This McVay offense has been trending ineffective for some time now. Some of this sickness was showing up late last season. This offense returned with its same great offensive stars plus new ones at all the skilled positions. The only unit that had suffered any departures was the OL. McVay did lose his QB coach this past off season.

Early in the season McVay's O had 1 short term injury to a starter @ RG Austin Blythe was unavailable for 1 1/2 games. Reserve RB Brown was injured again but even he has been available for 7 gms thus far.

The first big injury took place in game #6 with the injury to starting LG Noteboom who went on IR. Then WR Cooks injury but again Cooks has played & started in 8 gms. Cooks did practice this week. 2nd big injury occurred last Sunday to starting OC Brian Allen. So McVay has only 2 offensive starters to the IR.

McVay going into his 10th gm of this season this team is showing much more bumps & bruises than any other time this season. But its not anything unusual. The loss of McVay's 2 OL'ers might have made his OL stronger!

I consider Blythe as a better performing center than Brian Allen. IMO David Edwards is a much better RG than Blythe. I also believe Austin Corbett is better than both Noteboom & Demby @ LG.

HC McVay should be competent enough to get his offense up & running with the great offensive players he has @ his direction. There is something off & still ongoing with this offensive team.

If you have intentions to impel a high ranking Ram official reputation, I would send them in the direction of McVay or Kromer or both, its just not working in 2019.

Yup, both of the OL injuries to Noteboom & Allen are relatively recent, and we witnessed an immediate improvement at LG with Edwards entering the fray. All season people have been complaining about Blythe's play at RG, he comes out and again it looks like a good move, even if his taking on the Center role doesn't have immediate results. Then the struggling Havenstein goes down and Edwards is moved once again. It's no wonder the OL lacks chemistry yet, they look a bit like our pre-season games where they were dancing at every position looking for a home. These guys have had a week now to practice together, and while that's not much, hopefully they look fairly organized on game day. A solid McVay game plan will go a long way to help them succeed, that and finding a way to keep Mack off of Goff. jmo.

Come on. Everyone knows it.

McVay will come out with one run up the middle and then pass 40 times in a row...what a loser game plan he has!

McVay needs to run the ball 40 times tonight to have a chance to win. Up the middle, outside, counters, jet sweeps, WR screens, pitches, tosses, laterals, statue of liberty ... whatever he can come up with.

Run, run, run - and throw DEEP. Not this intermediate stuff. Take chances off play action and sling it deep.

First off who cares :) Secondly good! Maybe people will stop pilfering all his assistants and we can build something.
