No, actually it's the refs that are throwing the penalty flags, along with Roger Goodell, that are ruining football. It's not the flags fault. :shades:

Are Penalty Flags Ruining Football?
Are there really more penalty flags this year, and is it affecting the way the game is played? That, plus some theories behind the increase in injuries and Week 14 notes on a Packers unsung hero and J.J. Watt's MVP campaign
By Greg A. Bedard

Your eyes are not deceiving you: Flags are on the rise, and so are NFL passing attacks. Should fans care? Do fans care? Will things change?

Hi Greg,

The rise in penalties this season due to the points of emphasis on illegal contact, holding, etc. have gone way too far in my opinion. Ticky-tack flags seem to be impacting every single game. I consider myself a pretty loyal NFL fan but the games are becoming almost unwatchable.

One of my buddies is a fantasy football freak and is loving the big passing numbers posted every week. What do you think? Is there any hope for this all to come to balance somehow, or is this going to be the NFL as we know it for good?

—Charlie from Glenshaw, PA

Let’s lay out the numbers first. According to NFLpenalties.com, the average number of penalties per team has gone from to 6.08 to 6.7. Penalty yardage has gone from 52.49 to 56.07. The officials have stayed fairly consistent all season as they called an average of 13.88 penalties the first two weeks of the season, and Week 13 had a season-high 14.33. As far as the points of emphasis calls, defensive holding has increased from 0.678 per game (fifth-most called penalty) to 0.901 (third-most called infraction).

Defensive pass interference has actually declined (probably as a result of holding) from 0.925 to 0.832. Offensive pass interference has risen from 0.247 to 0.387. And, finally, illegal use of hands has gone from No. 13 on the infraction list (0.281) to fifth (0.707).

As far as the effect on NFL passing games, the league is on pace to set records for yards (509.5 per game combined; 504.6 last season) and completions (44.2; 43.4 last season)—even though attempts have declined (70.2; 70.8 last season). Completion percentage (62.9; 61.2 last season) and TD-to-INT ratio (1.88; 1.62 last season), among others, are also on pace to be the highest ever.

So, yes Charlie, your eyes are not deceiving you. NFL games are being affected by penalties like never before, and they’re making life much easier for passing offenses, which makes some fantasy players happy.

What do I think about this? Personally, I think it’s terrible and it’s something that I railed against three years ago. The game has completely changed, and it has rendered the NFL record book completely meaningless. I don’t care about any historical markers anymore. Don’t tell me how many yards Andrew Luck has passed for, or how he set a record for consecutive 300-yard games. I don’t care how many touchdowns Peyton Manning has thrown. You can’t compare stats back to last season let alone 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

Basically, we’re in an era that’s akin to the steroid era in baseball, only this isn’t illegal—it’s been implemented and fully endorsed by owners who only care about money and not the game. And yes, it’s cheered on by many fantasy football players.

I understand and endorse the player safety rules outside the protections granted to quarterbacks (which have become a joke). I am completely against increasing rules that favor passing offenses that, in case anyone hasn’t noticed, has set new records every year starting with the 2010 season!

[Deep breath]

That being said, Charlie, nothing is going to change. The most we can hope for is for the refs to swallow their whistles in the playoffs like they did last season, giving us a small stretch of real football (you see, most fantasy football is done by then), but that’s about it. This is the way of the NFL. People can complain on Twitter all they want about flags and games dragging on, but it’s not going to change unless people like you actually start tuning out in droves. Are you going to do that?

That certainly hasn’t happened yet (ratings continue to climb), and I don’t see it happening anytime soon. What would make you, Charlie, finally say, Enough is enough, I’m done? I can’t envision that line. The owners know this, so the NFL has no incentive to change. We’re stuck with the game the way it is.

I get real tired of all the penalties, especially on third down. I've noticed that is near impossible for a defense to get off the field some games. Calling a defensive hold on the opposite side of the field from where the play is is commonplace. Erring on the side of caution is a bullshit as well, it's either a penalty or it isn't.

It would be different if the penalties called were actual penalties instead of perceived/made up penalties like the neutral zone infraction called on the Rams field goal team a couple weeks ago! That was called to ensure the kick was no good had it not been blocked! OPI on Cook but not on Boldin when Boldin does it all the time and Cook not at all!

I hate all the flags, but I would argue that offensive holding should be called more at the line. Mr Quinn would agree I think.

The the amount of penalties called is one thing, the timing of some of these flags is the real issue.Drive killing and drive extending penalties is where a lot of these BS calls are made.I can't speak for all teams but I've seen our games and know that we have been screwed by the refs repeatedly. These same refs are to blame if we win out and don't make the playoffs at 9-7 and that's BS.

Not when they're thrown against our opponent!;)

What bothers me more is all of the plays that are reviewed by the officials and the excessive time the refs take. It sure puts a wet blanket of the excitement and flow of the game!

I agree. If it's the opposite side of the field, then it shouldn't be called.

It reminds me of the old saying, "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it."

They miss so many penalties it makes me sick sometimes to watch the games. WR's pushing off is out of control.
But the worst is the blatant holding being ignored. If they don't want to call it they shouldn't have made the rule.
It makes the games feel like the outcomes are being tampered with.

"What are yea, yella?"

I'm sick of the penalties. Slow teh game. Make it less interesting. It's obscene. Games are much more entertaining when dick-head refs aren't making it about themselves.

While I agree there's too much flaggery and particularly too much inconsistent flaggery favoring certain teams, and while I've declared that flaggery is now a word, I DO NOT want to see this.

Call the playoffs the same as you call the season. Otherwise, you let douchebags win who flounce the rules.

I am sick of key plays being influenced by flags when the penalty isn't obvious. As Rams fans we've seen our share... But...

Anyone see the weak pass interference call this past weekend against Baltimore that gave San Diego the game in the final seconds? Sick.

If it's not obvious, don't call it!

I don't think the number of penalties called is the problem. I think it's the number of penalties called that weren't penalties that's the problem.

Yes.
I stopped watching the NBA several years ago partially due to this exact same shit. The other reason is because the Phx Suns don't have a clue how to win a championship.

Agree. If a game has 100 legit penalties, CALL ALL 100 penalties! If a game has none, call none.

But, we know with the damn TV contracts that games are supposed to go a certain amount of time.

Now, we know from Baseball games that those vary wildly in time. But NFL games don't. College games also tend to vary much more so than NFL games, although, strangely... big conference prime time televised games almost always tend to fall...right on time...

We saw how holding wasn't called against our Rams, but plenty of teams did NOT get calls this year, so it wasn't just our team.

And as someone who's first team was the Lakers (out of spite because my step-dad was a Knicks fan and he chose to watch a Knicks/Lakers game instead of teaching me to ride my new bike... tadda! Instant Lakers fan.) I no longer watch the NBA for precisely this reason. I call them the "Jordan" fouls, but others have different names. Different fouls for stars and rookies and veterans and you name it...

I left Basketball. I left Baseball and baseball was my first true love (before I found girls....ya know). I mean at 10, I could name every starting lineup including every pitching rotation in both leagues, including managers and 3rd base coaches (usually former players, so that was pretty easy). And it was before free agency, so it was pretty easy to keep current.

So, if they want to completely sell out the integrity of the game like Basketball did (David Stern isn't the devil, but he may be one of his kids) or like Baseball did (the last labor deal lost me forever)... then I could see myself leaving football.

The NFL was the best because it was the truest contest. Basketball almost seemed like wrestling and baseball seemed like a Maury Povich show with the "drug test of the week".... the NFL was where the heart of America resided and leave it to Billionaires to not be content to be on top making billions...

If the penalties are consistent I think the problem of too many penalties being called is self correcting. Players soon learn what they can and cannot do and they adapt. Ray Ray was an example of what happens when you can't adapt. Teams aren't going to sign players to big contracts if they're penalty machines.

Getting half the penalties you do call wrong is what everyone complains about. Rightfully so IMO.
