L.A. Rams to play NFL preseason game at Aloha Stadium in 2019
By Ferd Lewis

NFL preseason football will return to Aloha Stadium in 2019 for the first time in 43 years, following a deal announced today between the Los Angeles Rams and the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

“We want this to be Rams’ Country again,” said Jason Griffiths, Rams’ vice president for partnerships, told the HTA.

The announcement was made following a unanimous vote at the HTA’s monthly board meeting at the Hawaii Convention Center and attended by Rams’ officials.

The last NFL exhibition game played here came in 1976 when the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers drew 36,364 to Aloha Stadium.

Southern California is the HTA’s largest market for visitors and the deal will include promotional opportunities and “community outreach” beyond the game, officials said.

The deal follows in the footsteps of a partnership between the HTA and the Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA. The Clippers played two exhibitions at the Stan Sheriff Center last year with the Toronto Raptors. Next month the Clippers will play the Sydney Kings of Australia.

Earlier in the day the Aloha Stadium Authority gave stadium manager Scott Chan the go-ahead “to do all things necessary to effectuate the potential NFL game.”

He was scheduled to meet later today with Rams officials on use of the stadium.

The game will be the largest revenue generating game of the year for Aloha Stadium, the HTA was told.

Rams are not playing any starters in preseason and are expecting a large crowd? Only way they'll get that is with a UH player. I actually wouldn't mind them stealing McGough from the Hawks

Nice! Love how we are building a new fold to another fan base, keep doing this and that and in years to come with a SB or two in a few years we might be a global brand.

Smart. The Lakers did this for years and turned Hawaii into such a home territory that during their brief cable standoff in 2012 there were a few weeks where you could watch games in Honolulu but not in Glendale, the Inland Empire and bits of Orange County.

I like the Rams are reaching up into Alaska too with their radio broadcasts.

I'm a Ram Fan today because the Rams were always on TV in the 808 on Sunday mornings back in the 70's. They were the "Home" team there then... and they need to claim the islands again! Smart move.

.
The Rams better not take this game lightly, I heard the Hawaii Tourism Authority is a pretty good team known for their cheap shots on D.

Well, I can understand wanting to get away from the horrendous weather in Los Angeles and play in the Great State of Hawaii....Where Spam is king and not unsolicited email...There is so many ways to prepare Spam...There's pineapple spam, lemon spam, coconut spam, pepper spam, spam soup, spam stew, spam salad, spam and potatoes, spam burger, spam sandwich.

I'm sorry, what were we talking about?

Maybe this will also grease the skids for the NFL to move the Pro Bowl back to Hawaii.

Imagine yourself as a young player getting voted to your first Pro Bowl. Congrats, young buck - you just won a trip to Orlando....yeah, it just doesn't pack the same punch as winning a trip to Hawaii.

Oh great.... Hokule’a-ers! Think they can hop on any ole canoe and be a Rams fan.

I’m good with band wagoners no matter where. I always figured Hawaii should be our territory anyway. Besides.... I am so sick of seeing that puke green shecocks and wine and tarnish of whiner fans. I can’t wait to see more Rams colors where ever I go.

Back in the 70's, here in Hawaii, the NFL primarily featured on television, the Rams, Cowboys and Vikings. Of course the Rams were a powerhouse team back then so there are many Rams fans in Hawaii. There are also many vikings and Cowboys fans. After moving to St Louis, I'm sure some fans fell away and then of course you had the band wagon fans who started to follow Denver and maybe Seattle, and of course the whiners when they made their run in the 80's and 90's.

The pro bowl used to sell out every year it was in Hawaii because we have no pro football in Hawaii. I believe this game will add fans to the Rams faithful and the game will be well received. I plan to go to this game.

The GIF in the OP, is a picture of magic island (Ala Moana Beach Park). The wife and I were there 2 Friday evenings ago as they have a fireworks show there every Friday evening.

Spam sandwiches are good. I don't care what you all say. Most people I know that "hate" spam have never tried it anyway. They're just going off of someone else's opinion and cultural momentum.
