Last night after JG had fumbled and threw an INT...Detroit had fallen apart and Aaron Rodgers is still throwing 14 yard completions, like a 15 point lead wasn't enough midway through the 4th quarter. I found myself thinking...

"What a dick."

I know that the Rams would have started running the ball almost exclusively to run out the clock. Rodgers and the Packers are in the same circumstance would like to run up the score, it seems. If I was a betting man, the Rams would always scare me because Sean doesn't care if he wins by one point or by twenty, and will give up the ball with a vanilla running attack instead of risking an INT when the game is in hand.

Which is better, assuming that you don't have real money on the table or need fantasy points?

Sure don't run up the score, but I think it's good to stick to whats working. SF took their foot off of the gas last week and it almost cost them.

Here's GB's drives after going up in the 4th
  • 1st & 10 at GB 15

    (8:21 - 4th) Aa.Rodgers pass short right to D.Adams to GB 30 for 15 yards (A.Parker).
  • 1st & 10 at GB 30

    (7:38 - 4th) A.Dillon right tackle to GB 38 for 8 yards (W.Harris).
  • 2nd & 2 at GB 38

    (6:52 - 4th) Aa.Rodgers pass short right to A.Dillon pushed ob at GB 46 for 8 yards (A.Anzalone).
  • 1st & 10 at GB 46

    (6:15 - 4th) Aa.Rodgers pass short right to E.St. Brown to GB 46 for no gain (B.Price).
  • 2nd & 10 at GB 46

    (5:31 - 4th) A.Dillon left guard to GB 45 for -1 yards (J.Collins).
  • (4:59 - 4th) Timeout #1 by GB at 04:46.
  • 3rd & 11 at GB 45

    (4:46 - 4th) (Shotgun) Aa.Rodgers sacked at GB 35 for -10 yards (C.Harris).
  • 4th & 21 at GB 35

    (4:06 - 4th) C.Bojorquez punts 56 yards to DET 9, Center-H.Bradley. K.Raymond ran ob at DET 19 for 10 yards (O.Burks).

  • 1st & 10 at GB 45

    (3:34 - 4th) K.Hill left guard to GB 48 for 3 yards (A.Parker).

    (3:27 - 4th) Timeout #2 by DET at 03:27.
  • 2nd & 7 at GB 48

    (3:27 - 4th) K.Hill left guard to DET 47 for 5 yards (T.Flowers; A.Anzalone).

    (3:21 - 4th) Timeout #3 by DET at 03:21.
  • 3rd & 2 at DET 47

    (3:21 - 4th) Aa.Rodgers pass incomplete deep right to M.Valdes-Scantling.
  • 4th & 2 at DET 47

    (3:15 - 4th) C.Bojorquez punts 38 yards to DET 9, Center-H.Bradley, fair catch by K.Raymond.

That's 1 deep shot at the end, and a bunch of short passes. Looks more like poor defense to me.

I do think you run the ball in that situation. IF you have a running game capable of finishing and getting first downs.

15 point is a two score lead.
With half a quarter left someone would be foolish to take the foot off the gas at that point. The game is still in question.
Nothing dicky about it at all.
And they are paid pros....you want them to stop, stop them.
This isn’t pop warner.

So Sean McVay isn't doing it right?

the thing I was thinking about was the first half...Goff had the great start and had 2 TD's....so GB dials up the 1 yd TD pass...it's like Rodgers is saying..."No way the other Cal QB is going to out play me on a National Stage"....but that was just me...

I don't think it has anything to do with running up the score. We don't run it to show the other team mercy. The train of thought with a lead like that is typically just limit any big plays from the opponent.

If your defense sucks, or they have a quick strike offense, and you aren't extremely confident in your run game, maybe running the ball in a 3 and out isn't a good idea and its better to keep doing what you're doing.

But if you trust your run game and you trust your defense, yea run the ball. From the looks of that first half, I wouldn't trust that GB defense to keep the opponent out of the end zone.

Asshole face would do it with a 30 point lead so in this case, I don't see the real issue. It's not near the dickish move the dickhead in NO loves to pull just to maintain his moniker of asshole face.

I think you want to win or lose with the ball in your best players’ hands, the Chiefs gave it to their 4th or 5th best guy and he screwed up, the ravens gave it to Lamar.

I need to point out our boy Bojo nailed those punts…

56 yards, pinned inside 20.

38 yarder pinned at the 9.

We threw a TD pass late in the fourth quarter when we were up by 13 against the Bears...

And point differential IS a tiebreaker, although rarely needed. If I were the Packers HC I would have tried to win by as much as possible because of the week prior

But...that's different. We only have the most honorable intentions.....

It is a matter of preference. Clearly McVay knows how to hold a lead and close out a game, given The Stat. However, my preference is to not sit on a lead until it's 3 TDs or larger. Second however, I'm not a football coach so that's not from any experience. It just sounds good.

I think you play your offense to score until we get to about 5 min left in the game - then you can start to play the clock a bit. I do think McV goes to the clock game too early and gives up possessions
